PEOPLE has confirmed that the other person involved in the incident did not have a personal relationship to Warner, but entered the water in an effort to save him
More information has come to light about the second person involved in Malcolm-Jamal Warner's drowning.
On Sunday, July 20, the Cosby Show actor drowned while swimming during a family trip in Costa Rica. He was 54.
It was later revealed that another person was taken by an ambulance to a local hospital and is in critical condition from the same incident where Warner drowned.
The Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) told PEOPLE in a statement that the actor "was apparently swept away by a current" and "was rescued by bystanders" but "declared lifeless" on shore.
The other person, who remains in critical condition, entered the water to try and save Warner, officials exclusively confirm to PEOPLE.
A spokesperson for the OIJ tells PEOPLE on Tuesday, July 22, that the second victim "came in [the water] to help Mr. Warner."
No information regarding the victim's identity has been shared.
The spokesperson also confirms that the other person had no personal connection to Warner, but was on the beach and decided to help.
An investigation is still ongoing, per authorities.
The Costa Rican Red Cross previously told PEOPLE they "attended" to two adult males after receiving a report of a "water-related" incident around 2:10 p.m. on Sunday.
CPR was performed on Warner for 20 minutes, per the agency, but he was declared dead at the scene.
Warner had been on vacation with his wife and daughter at the time of the incident, a source told NBC News.
Warner's official cause of death was also confirmed on Tuesday after an autopsy was performed.
The actor died from accidental asphyxiation by submersion, per the OIJ, who confirmed that an autopsy took place on July 22.
His body was formally identified by Costa Rican National Police, and, per the OIJ, will be "removed from the Judicial Morgue by a funeral service company hired and authorized by Mr. Warner's family."
Tributes have been pouring in for the actor since the news broke of his shocking death.
Known for playing Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, as well as beloved roles on Malcolm & Eddie, Reed Between the Lines and The Resident, stars from across Hollywood have been paying tribute to Warner on social media.
Tracee Ellis Ross, who he starred in Reed Between the Lines with, remembered him fondly as "my first TV husband" in an Instagram post.
"My heart is so so sad. What an actor and friend you were: warm, gentle, present, kind, thoughtful, deep, funny, elegant. You made the world a brighter place."

Bill Cosby also spoke out via spokesperson Andrew Wyatt, who told PEOPLE that Warner's death "reminded him of the same call he received when his son died.'
"He had just done a concert in Minnesota and called Mr. Cosby and talked about it. They spoke all the time. He said 'Malcolm was changing humanity,'" Wyatt said.

Boy, 6, drowns after wandering away from family reunion at Belle Isle Park

A 6-year-old boy is dead after drowning in the Detroit River near Belle Isle Park on Saturday night, according to Michigan State Police. Multiple children, including the boy, were playing at Belle Isle Park during a family reunion. At one point, he wandered off from the other kids, police said. Family members started searching for the boy and called 911 after noticing he was missing, police said. The boy was found in the river near where the family reunion was taking place, around 30 minutes after he went missing. Officials with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Michigan State Police attempted life-saving measures before the boy was taken to the hospital, where he later died. "Our heart goes out to this little boy's family and also the first responders and community members on scene who did everything they could to try and save this child's life," MSP First Lieutenant Mike Shaw said in a written statement on Sunday morning.

Boat capsizes in Nigeria's Niger state and at least 25 people feared dead, authorities say

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — A boat transporting passengers to a market in north-central Nigeria capsized, killing at least 25 people, authorities said Sunday. The accident happened Saturday near Gumu village in the Shiroro area of Niger state, Ibrahim Hussaini, an official with the National Emergency Management Agency, told The Associated Press. Hussaini said search and rescue efforts were underway, but are limited because armed gangs mostly control the area. He added that the number of casualties may rise. 'Very few people can go to the scene because of banditry in that area,' he told the AP. Armed groups, commonly referred to as bandits, have stepped up attacks in recent months in the north-central region, complicating rescue efforts. The accident is the latest in a series of deadly boat accidents on Nigerian waterways, where accidents are common in remote communities, especially during the rainy season, due to overloaded and poorly maintained vessels. In September last year, a boat carrying mostly farmers capsized on a river in the northwestern state of Zamfara, drowning at least 40 people. At least 326 people died in boat accidents in Nigeria in 2024, according to a count by TheCable, a local media outlet. Analysts say many boats operate without life jackets and blame weak enforcement by regulatory authorities.

Joanna Gaines Just Shared a Glimpse Into Her Family's Dreamy Beach Vacation

This summer, Joanna Gaines and family have proven that they're absolutely vacation goals. The interior designer-turned-television star shared a handful of photos on Instagram from her recent beach trip and from the looks of it, Gaines and family had the coziest time in their temporary tropical oasis. According to the location tag Gaines used for her post, the family was vacationing in Sayulita, Riviera Nayarit, Mexico. Given that Sayulita isn't as popular as bigger tourist destinations like Playa del Carmen or Puerto Vallarta, the Gaines fam likely enjoyed an intimate vacay in the quaint beach town, which has become a popular surf destination. In the photos uploaded to social media, the Fixer Upper host can be seen taking full advantage of the beach home's infinity pool, which is mere feet away from the beach. One image shows her striking an impressive yoga pose at the edge of the pool and in another she can be seen taking a refreshing dip in the pool. The Gaines also noshed on authentic Mexican fare like fresh salsa and guacamole, played Spades, and enjoyed the occasional stroll down the beach. After the vacation photos were uploaded, fans of Gaines and her family were quick to show their support. "Imagine hating on them and they are doing yoga on the beach 😂," one of them wrote. "we love an unbothered queen," read another comment. Other fans commented on how deserving the family is of a little R&R. "Hope you have many moments of peace and joy. Well earned. I'm a fan of how creative, hard working, and authentic you are. ❤️," said one person.
