Death of Brett Gardner's son could still be ruled homicide
The post Death of Brett Gardner's son could still be ruled homicide appeared first on ClutchPoints. In late March, former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner's 14-year-old son Miller passed away. Tragically, Miller became severely ill during a family vacation in Costa Rica. Afterward, Costa Rica's Judicial Investigation Department (OIJ) opened an investigation into the circumstances of his death. As of now, the investigation remains open, and Miller's death potentially could be ruled as a homicide, per Gueorgui Milkov and Anthony Olivieri of ESPN. In March, investigators initially told ESPN that they believed Miller's death was accidental. In early April, Miller's death was attributed to carbon monoxide poisoning. A spokeswoman from the Prosecutor's Office of Costa Rita handling the case said to ESPN regarding a homicide investigation: 'The purpose of the investigation is precisely to determine whether or not we are dealing with a possible homicide. For this reason, it is not possible at this time to confirm or rule out that a crime has been committed.' According to the OIJ, Miller and his family went out to dinner at a local restaurant. The family said that the food made them sick. Initially, investigators suspected Miller's death was the result of asphyxiation, but it was ruled out. During the investigation, the OIJ examined the room the Gardner family was staying in at the Arenas del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort. Afterward, the OIJ stated that 'high emissions of carbon monoxide were detected.' Miller Gardner grew up in South Carolina. He played baseball and football at Pinewood Preparatory School in Summerville. While there, Miller wore his father's No. 11 jersey. Brett Gardner played in MLB for 14 seasons with the Yankees before retiring in 2021. He was a part of the 2009 World Series-winning team. Over time, Gardner emerged as one of the most popular players on the team. During that time, he was the longest-tenured player on the Yankees roster. In addition, Gardner received an All-Star nomination in 2015 and a Gold Glove Award in 2016. BREAKING NEWS Shock update on mysterious death of Yankees star Brett Gardner's son at Costa Rican hotel
Authorities in Costa Rica are still working to establish if the death of Miller Gardner, the son of New York Yankees hero Brett, was a homicide. The 14-year-old died March 21 at a luxury Costa Rican resort. Initially, there had been suggestions that food poisoning or an extreme reaction to medication had caused the teenager's death, before authorities said it was carbon monoxide inhalation. But now, nearly three months after Miller's passing, authorities have told ESPN that the death remains under investigation. 'The purpose of the investigation is precisely to determine whether or not we are dealing with a possible homicide. For this reason, it is not possible at this time to confirm or rule out that a crime has been committed,' Sharon Hernandez Coto, a press officer from the Prosecutor's Office of Costa Rica said. She added that authorities there want 'to determine whether the cause of death was a homicide or not, and, if so, to establish responsibility.' As it stands, there is reportedly no timetable for the completion of the investigation. A statement in early April from Randall Zuniga - general director of the OIJ in Costa Rica - said that carbon monoxide exposure had killed Miller. 'Concentrations above 50% are already lethal. In this case, the saturation percentage is higher, thus proving the police's hypothesis that the death was due to exposure to carbon monoxide,' he said. 'Other drug tests were conducted, including fentanyl and other substances; all were negative.' Brett Gardner and his wife, Jessica, announced Miller's death via the Yankees on March 23. They said Miller had fallen ill along with other members of the family on the vacation, where they were staying at the $1,000-a-night Arenas Del Mar resort. 'With heavy hearts we are saddened to announce the passing of our youngest son, Miller,' they wrote. 'He was 14 years old and has left us far too soon after falling ill along with several other family members while on vacation. 'We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st. 'Miller was a beloved son and brother and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile. He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends. He lived life to the fullest every single day.' The family have not spoken out since that statement. Gardner played for the Yankees from 2008 until he retired in 2021, winning the World Series in 2009.

Miller Gardner, son of ex-Yankees player, died from carbon monoxide poisoning, officials say
NEW YORK — Miller Gardner — the 14-year old son of former Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner — died from carbon monoxide poisoning, Costa Rican authorities confirmed Wednesday. A blood test for carbon monoxide showed a saturation level of 64% in Gardner's body, Costa Rican officials said. Concentrations above 50% are considered lethal. Additional tests to detect the presence of drugs such as fentanyl were also conducted. Those results came back negative. Gardner was found dead by a family member in a hotel room on March 21 while vacationing at the Arenas Del Mar resort in Costa Rica. Investigators found high emissions of carbon monoxide contamination in the hotel room where Gardner and his family were staying, OIJ director Randall Zuniga said during a video press conference on Tuesday. The hotel room was next to a specialized machine room, which could have led to the contamination, Zuniga said. The night before Gardner's death, the family went out to dinner at a restaurant close to the resort and said they felt sick when they returned to the hotel, according to a Costa Rican source close to the investigation. Miller was the youngest of the Brett Gardner's two sons.

Miller Gardner, son of ex-Yankees star, died from carbon monoxide poisoning, officials say
Officials in Costa Rica have confirmed the official cause of death of Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees player Brett Gardner who died under mysterious circumstances on March 21 while on a family vacation. The initial investigation in the days that followed Miller's tragic passing focused on asphyxiation, which was later ruled out. The investigation then pivoted to food poisoning as a possible cause of death, but on Wednesday night, Costa Rican Judicial Investigative Agency (OIJ) Director Randall Zúñiga said the toxicology results confirmed that he died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning. "It's important to note that adjacent to this room is a dedicated machine room, where it's believed there may be some type of contamination toward these rooms," Zúñiga said. Zúñiga said Miller was tested for carboxyhemoglobin, a compound generated when carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin in the blood. The test showed a saturation level of 64%. It is considered lethal when carboxyhemoglobin saturation exceeds 50%. The Gardner family stayed at the Arenas Del Mar hotel in Manuel Antonio. Earlier this week, the OIJ suggested that carbon monoxide poisoning was likely the cause of death, but officials at the hotel denied those claims. A hotel spokesperson told Fox News Digital that the levels in the hotel room "were non-existent and non-lethal." Fox News Digital reached out to the spokesperson again following Wednesday's announcement. The Gardner family said in a statement following Miller's passing that several family members fell ill during the trip. "We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st," the statement read. "Miller was a beloved son and brother and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile. He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends. He lived life to the fullest every single day." Gardner was an outfielder for the Yankees for 14 seasons and was on the team when they won their last World Series title in 2009. He spent his entire career in the Bronx, last playing in 2021. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Carbon monoxide poisoning was cause of Miller Gardner's death, toxicology report confirms
The death of Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, was due to carbon monoxide inhalation, the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) of Costa Rica said Wednesday. Gardner was found dead by a family member in his hotel room on March 21, while the family was staying at the Arenas Del Mar resort in Costa Rica. OIJ director Randall Zúñiga confirmed that the toxicology results and the carboxyhemoglobin test showed a saturation level of 64%. Zúñiga stated that concentrations above 50% of carboxyhemoglobin are lethal. According to the National Institutes of Health, carboxyhemoglobin is 'the complex formed within red blood cells when hemoglobin is exposed to carbon monoxide.' 'In this particular case, it was a strictly scientific effort that allowed us to find the real truth of the facts,' Zúñiga said. 'In the autopsy, in fact, when it was performed, the young man's organs had a very specific layer, which is generated when a person dies from inhalation of carbon monoxide gases, and that … was visible at the time the autopsy of the minor was performed.' The official added that tests were also conducted to detect the presence of drugs such as fentanyl, and the results were negative. On Monday, Zúñiga had said that a machine room next to the hotel room where Gardner was sleeping was 'believed to have some type of contamination that could have caused this situation.' On Tuesday, the Arenas Del Mar resort offered its condolences but said the cause of death was still uncertain at the time. CNN has reached back out to the resort for comment. Preliminary reports had initially suggested the cause of the teenager's death could have been 'asphyxiation due to intoxication related to food poisoning,' but that was later ruled out. Other members of the family had felt unwell the night before his death. Announcing the death of their son last month, Brett Gardner and his wife Jessica said Miller 'left us far too soon after falling ill along with several other family members while on vacation.' 'Miller was a beloved son and brother and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile. 'He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends. He lived life to the fullest every single day.' Brett Gardner played in Major League Baseball for 14 seasons, all with the Yankees where he was a part of the team that won the World Series in 2009. He retired following the 2021 season.
