Detroit's Skubal making a bid for a Cy Young repeat. He'd be the first in AL to do that since 2000

It's been a quarter century since an American League pitcher won back-to-back Cy Young Awards.
It takes a pretty special pitcher to pull that off — but Tarik Skubal fits the bill.
Skubal showed why he's the favorite to win the Cy Young for a second straight year, striking out 11 with no walks Sunday night in Detroit's 2-1 victory over Texas. If the Cy Young indeed goes to him, he'll be the first AL pitcher to earn it in back-to-back seasons since Pedro Martinez's remarkable stretch with the Red Sox in 1999 and 2000.
Roger Clemens won consecutive Cy Youngs on two different occasions (1986-87 and 1997-98), and Jim Palmer did it in 1975 and '76. Those are the only AL pitchers besides Martinez to pull that off. It's been a bit more common in the National League: Greg Maddux (1992-95) and Randy Johnson (1999-2002) both won four straight, and Tim Lincecum (2008-09), Clayton Kershaw (2013-14), Max Scherzer (2016-17) and Jacob deGrom (2018-19) are in the two-in-a-row club.
National Leaguer Sandy Koufax won the Cy Young in 1965 and 1966, back when there was only one award for both leagues.
The win Sunday snapped a six-game losing streak for the Tigers, who still have baseball's best record and an 11-game lead in the AL Central. Not only has Detroit struggled to win games lately, but the All-Star game didn't go great either, with Skubal giving up two runs in the first inning and Tigers teammate Casey Mize allowing a homer in the sixth.
Skubal, however, pitched well enough on Sunday to take over the AL lead in ERA. He's at 2.1854, while Boston's Garrett Crochet is at 2.1946.
Trivia time
In 1988, a Minnesota left-hander won the ERA title by an unusually slim margin, finishing at 2.4465, while Milwaukee's Teddy Higuera was second at 2.4545. Who was that Twins pitcher?
Double repeat?
Not only does Skubal have a shot at winning two straight Cy Young Awards, but last year's AL MVP — Aaron Judge — has a good chance to repeat as well.
Only three times has a league had back-to-back winners of both its MVP and Cy Young — and all three times it happened in the NL. Albert Pujols was MVP and Lincecum won the Cy Young in 2008 and 2009. Barry Bonds was MVP in 2001 and 2002 while Johnson was winning the Cy Young — and Bonds was also MVP in 1992 and 1993 while Maddux was taking Cy Young honors.
Line of the week
Miami's Kyle Stowers, who hit three homers last Sunday in the final game before the All-Star break, added two more in the Marlins' first game back Friday night. One of those was a two-run walk-off shot that gave Miami an 8-7 win over Kansas City.
Honorable mention: Minnesota's Joe Ryan allowed one run in seven innings and struck out 11 in a 7-1 win over Colorado on Sunday. The All-Star right-hander lowered his ERA to 2.63.

The New York Yankees rallied from a 7-2 sixth-inning deficit to beat Atlanta 12-9 on Saturday night. Trent Grisham hit a tiebreaking grand slam with two outs in the top of the ninth. Before that, the Yankees scored four runs in the sixth and got solo homers from Cody Bellinger and Anthony Volpe in the seventh and eighth. Atlanta's win probability peaked at 96.1% in the fifth, according to Baseball Savant.
Trivia answer
No, it wasn't Frank Viola, the Minnesota lefty who went 24-7 and won the Cy Young that year. The left-hander on the Twins who edged Higuera for the ERA title was Allan Anderson.

Valdez (11-4) gave up one run and seven hits in seven innings to extend the majors' longest active winning streak. Randal Grichuk and Geraldo Perdomo had three hits apiece for the Diamondbacks, who lost their second straight game after a four-game winning streak. Twins 10, Dodgers 7 Royce Lewis and Christian Vazquez each drove in three runs and Minnesota used a trio of three-run innings to earn a victory at Los Angeles. Carlos Correa had two hits, two walks and four runs while Ty France added two hits, two walks and three runs as the Twins improved to 2-3 on a six-game road trip. Andy Pages hit a three-run home run and Shohei Ohtani added a two-run shot for the Dodgers, who have lost seven of their past eight home games and 11 of their past 14 games overall. Nationals 6, Reds 1 Konnor Pilkington threw two perfect innings in relief to earn his first major league win since 2022 and Josh Bell homered for the second game in a row as host Washington defeated Cincinnati. After Nationals starter Brad Lord allowed one run in four innings, Pilkington (1-0) capped his two-inning stint by striking out the side in the sixth. Riley Adams contributed a two-run single in the sixth to blow open the game. Gavin Lux went 4-for-4 and drove in the Reds' run. Rookie starter Chase Burns (0-2) struck out 10 for the second straight start, but he surrendered seven hits and six runs (five earned) over 5 2/3 innings. Guardians 6, Orioles 3 Jose Ramirez homered for the second straight game and Kyle Manzardo and Brayan Rocchio drove in two runs apiece as surging Cleveland beat visiting Baltimore. The Guardians have won 10 of their last 12 games to move back into the American League wild-card hunt. Ramirez hit a solo shot in the first inning while Manzardo singled home Angel Martinez in the third and had a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Joey Cantillo (2-0) earned his first win as a starter this season, giving up one run on two hits over five innings. Ramon Laureano homered for the second evening in a row for Baltimore, giving him five RBIs in the series. Ramon Urias had a pair of hits and scored on Jacob Stallings' second double-play grounder in two at-bats. Brandon Young (0-5) worked 4 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on four hits. Pirates 8, Tigers 5 Spencer Horwitz, Tommy Pham and Bryan Reynolds had three hits and two RBIs apiece as host Pittsburgh knocked off Detroit for the second night in a row. Jake Rogers and Jahmai Jones homered for the Tigers while Spencer Torkelson and Gleyber Torres notched three hits apiece. Starter Casey Mize (9-4) surrendered 10 hits and five runs (four earned) over four innings. Phillies 4, Red Sox 1 Cristopher Sanchez matched his career high with 12 strikeouts and scattered four hits in a complete-game win for host Philadelphia over Boston. Sanchez (9-2) needed just 106 pitches to wrap up his first complete game of the season. Max Kepler and Kyle Schwarber cracked homers in the second while Trea Turner went 2-for-4 with a run. Rob Refsnyder poked a homer leading off the fourth to account for Boston's run. Starter Richard Fitts (1-4) allowed six hits and four runs before departing with one out in the fourth. Marlins 4, Padres 3 Rookie Agustin Ramirez singled, doubled and scored twice, leading host Miami past San Diego. The Marlins scored all four of their runs with two outs as they improved to 22-12 over their past 34 games. Miami starter Edward Cabrera (4-4) lasted 5 2/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits. Ronny Henriquez allowed two runs in the ninth but was able to collect his sixth save. Padres starter Stephen Kolek (3-5) lasted 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits. Luis Arraez had two hits and an RBI for San Diego. Rays 4, White Sox 3 Jose Caballero slapped a two-run single to highlight a four-run second inning, fueling host Tampa Bay to a victory over Chicago. Caballero had two of his team's five hits and rookie Chandler Simpson stole three bases for the Rays, who snapped a modest two-game skid and evened their three-game series against Chicago at one victory apiece. Edwin Uceta (7-2) relieved starter Drew Rasmussen and allowed one hit and fanned four over two scoreless innings. Colson Montgomery belted his first career homer to lead off the seventh inning for Chicago, which saw its season-high four-game winning streak come to a halt. Mets 3, Angels 2 Francisco Alvarez hit a game-tying two-run homer in the fifth inning and Brandon Nimmo delivered an RBI single two batters later as host New York earned another comeback win, edging Los Angeles. The Angels' Jorge Soler homered in the second inning off Frankie Montas (3-1). Nolan Schanuel's RBI double down the first base line in the fifth gave Los Angeles a 2-0 lead before the Mets mounted a two-out rally against Kyle Hendricks (5-7) in the bottom of the frame. Ryne Stanek gave up singles to Logan O'Hoppe and Schanuel in the ninth before closing out his third save. Schanuel finished with a career-high four hits. Adolis Garcia and Marcus Semien also homered for the Rangers. Lawrence Butler homered to open the game off deGrom. Sean Newcomb (2-5) took the loss in relief of J.T. Ginn, who threw five innings of one-run ball. Cubs 6, Royals 0 Matthew Boyd pitched seven scoreless innings as Chicago spoiled 45-year-old Rich Hill's return to the major leagues with a shutout win over the visiting Kansas City. Boyd (11-3) extended his scoreless streak to 23 innings while allowing four hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Nico Hoerner, Dansby Swanson and Matt Shaw each had two hits for the Cubs, who bounced back after losing the opener of the three-game series on Monday. Giants, winless Justin Verlander chase series victory vs. Braves

(Photo credit: John E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images) Justin Verlander will continue to search for his first elusive win with the Giants when San Francisco wraps up its six-game road trip with a series finale against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday. Atlanta won the opener of the three-game series 9-5 on Monday before San Francisco prevailed 9-0 on Tuesday. The latest result ended the Giants' six-game losing streak and gave San Francisco a 4-1 advantage over the Braves in the season series. Verlander (0-8, 4.99 ERA) will be matched up against Atlanta's Spencer Strider (4-7, 3.59) on Wednesday. Verlander is coming off an abbreviated start on Friday. The 42-year-old veteran pitched 2 2/3 innings -- only the ninth time in his career he failed to pitch at least three innings -- and allowed four runs on nine hits and two walks against the host Toronto Blue Jays. He failed to record a strikeout for the first time this season. Verlander was ejected from the dugout on Sunday after complaining about perceived missed pitches by plate umpire Chad Whitson, who was caught on a live television microphone saying, 'How about you worry about getting out of the third inning, huh?' The right-hander did not face the Braves when the teams met in San Francisco in June. Verlander has made four career starts against Atlanta, going 2-1 with a 3.75 ERA. 'Stuff-wise, I'm still fairly optimistic,' Verlander said. 'I had a tough one (against Toronto). They found a way to put a lot of balls in play and found a lot of holes. The ones they did hit hard found corners. I think about how the mechanical adjustments have helped my stuff. The velo is better. I think the breaking balls are sharper, all in all.' Strider was outstanding in his first post-All-Star-break start on Friday against the New York Yankees, leading the Braves to a 7-3 win. He threw six scoreless innings, allowed three hits and three walks and struck out eight to log a seventh quality start in his past eight appearances. He is 4-3 with a 2.77 ERA in that span. 'We've got to show up every day and our job the rest of the season is to try to win the game we're playing today,' Strider said. 'Once the game starts, that can be the only focus, and I think that's going to give us the best chance.' Strider faced the Giants on June 8 and took the loss, pitching six innings and allowing four runs, three earned. In five career starts against San Francisco, the 26-year-old right-hander is 2-2 with a 3.77 ERA. The Giants made a couple of moves to bolster their bullpen on Tuesday. Right-handers Hayden Birdsong and Tristan Beck were both optioned to Triple-A Sacramento, with right-handers Carson Seymour and Sean Hjelle recalled as replacements. Both new faces got into the Tuesday night game and delivered solid outings. Hjelle pitched a scoreless inning but was hit on the right hamstring by a 107 mph liner off the bat of Michael Harris II. Hjelle remained in the game after a visit from the trainer. Seymour closed the contest with two strong innings, striking out four.

A'ja Wilson's 24 points propel Aces to win over Dream

(Photo credit: Candice Ward-Imagn Images) An All-Star performance by A'ja Wilson gave the Las Vegas Aces their first three-game winning streak of the season, as they beat the visiting Atlanta Dream 87-72 on Tuesday. Wilson, fresh off her seventh All-Star Game appearance, led the Aces (12-11) with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Dana Evans added 14 points off the bench and Jackie Young contributed 14 points and seven assists in the victory. Allisha Gray carried the offensive load for the Dream (13-10) with 24 points and five 3-pointers. Jordin Canada logged 12 points and six assists as Atlanta took its third loss in four games. After the Aces trailed by seven points after the first quarter, Las Vegas surged to a 16-2 run at the start of the second and never looked back. Las Vegas increased the lead up to 14 points with 4:11 remaining in the third quarter on a basket from Jewell Loyd and held back an Atlanta side that tried making adjustments all night. In the second quarter, the Dream went to their inside duo of Brionna Jones and Brittney Griner, but the Aces began double-teaming anyone who received a pass in the paint. That attention held the two to only five combined first-half points on 2-of-7 shooting. When Atlanta abandoned the halfcourt game for transition attempts, the Aces forced turnovers, which hampered the Dream all night. Atlanta started the night with the league's lowest turnover rate per game at 11.8 but committed 19 turnovers on Tuesday, resulting in 24 points for Las Vegas. Gray scored 12 points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc in the first quarter, getting Atlanta off to a strong start. The Dream needed Gray to play through the undisclosed illness with fellow All-Star Rhyne Howard out until at least the beginning of August with a leg injury. Atlanta returns to action Wednesday against the Phoenix Mercury, where Griner returns for her first game vs. her former team. Griner spent 11 seasons in Phoenix before signing with the Dream in the offseason. Las Vegas will visit the Indiana Fever on Thursday.
