Two pensioners dead as BMW ploughs into care home during police chase
Two pensioners have died after a stolen BMW being chased by police smashed into their care home, police have confirmed.
The car left the road in Witherwack, Sunderland, on Wednesday evening, crashing into Highcliffe Care Home. Residents were quickly evacuated, and some taken to hospital, reports the Mirror.
A woman in her 90s and another in her 80s, both residents at the home, died from their injuries on Thursday.
Two men, both aged 21, who were previously arrested, have now been further arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.
The blue BMW had been reported stolen from the Fenham area of Newcastle around 9.20pm on Wednesday. It was being chased by officers on the A1231 eastbound in Sunderland when it crashed into the building at around 9.40pm.
The impact caused structural damage, with witnesses describing the top floor as having "caved in".
The two men were initially arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, while one was also arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving. They remain in custody.

Eight other residents were taken to hospital. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, and all but one have since been discharged.
Carol Wilson, whose husband was among those evacuated, told the BBC the entire top floor had caved in.
Because the car was involved in a police pursuit at the time, Northumbria Police has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
Chief Superintendent Mark Hall added: 'This is an extremely sad development and all of our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of everyone affected.
'We will continue to support them in any way that we can at this time. Our investigations remain at an early stage, and we would ask people to avoid speculation both online and in the community.'
In a statement released yesterday, before the deaths were announced, Avery Healthcare said: 'The safety and well-being of our residents and staff is our absolute priority and we continue to work closely with the relevant authorities.
'Residents have been moved to alternative accommodation where their care continues without interruption.
'We would like to express our sincere thanks to the carers and colleagues across our neighbouring homes who have stepped in to support at this time.
'Their professionalism, dedication, and compassion in ensuring a smooth transition and continuity of care has been truly commendable.'

Fresh info on missing busker who vanished more than two weeks ago
Police Scotland have issued a new description of missing busker Lewis Cuthbert. A new description of a missing busker who vanished more than two weeks ago has been issued. Lewis Cuthbert, 25, was last seen at around 4pm on Monday August 4 in the Lesmahagow Road area of Strathaven in Lanarkshire. Police Scotland have now revealed that they believe to know what he was wearing when he left his home in Strathaven. He is described as around 5ft 10ins, of slim build with short brown curly hair and was wearing a yellow & brown 'bomber' style jacket with white fur inside with a large collar/hood and jeans. Lewis is a busker and frequents Glasgow City Centre. However, he has been known to travel to other areas of Scotland, and with this being festival time in Edinburgh, it is thought he may have travelled through to the capital. He may be carrying a black backpack, a Bluetooth speaker and a microphone. Inspector Billy Sloan said: 'Unfortunately, despite a significant search for Lewis, there have been no sightings of him since he went missing from Strathaven. 'His family are understandably very concerned for his welfare and just want him to come home. 'Specialist officers continue to search where he was last seen, and police colleagues in Glasgow and Edinburgh have been searching for him too. 'We have issued this appeal in the hope that Lewis himself will see that people what to make sure he is safe and to get in touch. 'We'd also hope to reach any of his friends or people he may have stayed with over the last two weeks. We'd urge them, or anyone who knows where he may be, or who has information that will help trace him, to call police or advise him to go home. 'We'd remind people to check their gardens, sheds or out-houses in case he had sought shelter locally.' Anyone who can help is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1371 of Friday, 8 August 2025. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! BBC executive says corporation ‘acted fast' after Gregg Wallace allegations
Wallace, 60, issued an apology saying he was 'deeply sorry for any distress caused' and that he 'never set out to harm or humiliate', after a review said 45 out of 83 allegations made against him were upheld. Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Kate Phillips said: 'I think when complaints came to me about Greg Wallace, which was 2019, when I dealt with it, I always dealt with it straightaway. 'So there were two complaints. I dealt with them. I acted on them fast. 'I think we weren't as joined-up in the BBC as we are now, so I didn't know about some of the historical things that had taken place. 'So if I'd known about those at the time, yes, I may have acted differently, but I acted on the information I was given. 'I think I acted responsibly. I left him in no doubt of the expected behaviour that we expect at the BBC, if you like. 'I stand by the actions I took at the time with the knowledge that I had.' She added: 'Other allegations didn't come to us until much later, sort of at the end of 2023, and at that point we did act, and we acted fast.' In November 2024, the show's production company, Banijay UK, announced that Wallace would step away from his role on MasterChef while historical allegations of misconduct were investigated. At the time, a BBC spokesman said it took any issues raised with them 'seriously' and 'any behaviour which falls below the standards expected by the BBC will not be tolerated'. The report found that the 'majority of the allegations against Mr Wallace (94%) related to behaviour which is said to have occurred between 2005 and 2018', and only one allegation was substantiated after 2018. Of the substantiated claims outlined in the report, some related to inappropriate language, being in a state of undress, and one case of unwanted physical contact. Wallace's co-presenter John Torode was the subject of an allegation of using racist language, which was upheld, as part of the Lewis Silkin report, and also left the show. The 21st series of MasterChef, which was filmed last year and stars Torode and Wallace, is currently airing on BBC One. Two MasterChef contestants have been edited out of the series after deciding they would not like to be included, following the report. Phillips also spoke about the controversy around BBC's Gaza: How To Survive A Warzone documentary, which was removed from BBC iPlayer in February after it emerged that the child narrator, Abdullah, is the son of Ayman Alyazouri, who has worked as Hamas's deputy minister of agriculture. Asked if the controversy would impact future commissioning from an impartiality perspective, she said: 'Impartiality is at the core of everything we do. 'We will always commission those sort of brave, strong stories and tell the stories that need to be heard. And I'm very confident we'll keep doing that going forward.' Before Phillips was announced as the permanent chief content officer of the BBC earlier this year, she was controller of BBC One, after leading its entertainment team and BBC Worldwide's formats team.
