Data leak from Gurugram call centre leads to ₹2.6 crore credit card fraud, 18 nabbed

The accused, who were arrested in a six-month-long operation, allegedly obtained confidential data of customers through insiders at a call centre in Gurugram, posed as bank executives, and tricked the targets into revealing sensitive details such as one-time passwords (OTPs) and card verification values (CVVs), an officer said.
"The syndicate then used the stolen credentials to buy electronic gift cards from platforms like online travel booking platforms, which were subsequently sold to travel agents. The proceeds were laundered through cash and cryptocurrency channels, primarily Tether (USDT)," Deputy Commissioner of Police (IFSO) Vinit Kumar said in an official statement.
Police estimate the gang defrauded customers of nearly ₹2.6 crore.
"The modus operandi included data leak at the source in which insider moles in the authorised Card Protection Plan (CPP) call centre, Teleperformance, Gurugram, secretly siphoned off confidential SBI Credit Card data," he said.
The stolen details were used instantly to buy high-value e-gift cards, which were sold to travel agents for cash or converted into Tether (USDT cryptocurrency), making the money vanish from the financial system, the DCP said.
This slick operation ran non-stop, targeting people across states while avoiding Delhi-based SBI customers, he added.
Ankit Rathi, Waseem, and Vishal Bhardwaj were identified as the masterminds of the fraud. Call centre employees Vishesh Lahori and Durgesh Dhakad were accused of leaking data, while others arrested were several operational members, finance handlers and SIM card suppliers.
Police recovered 52 mobile phones, multiple SIM cards and customer bank details during the investigation.
"The investigation has also raised concerns about large-scale data leaks from Teleperformance, a Gurugram-based call centre handling critical banking information. The breach exposes the company's inability to safeguard confidential data and raises urgent questions about its security protocols," police said.

Man kills wife in Delhi's Seelampur, walks into police station to confess crime
In a shocking incident, a man allegedly killed his wife in Delhi's Seelampur and later walked into the police station to confess to his crime on Sunday. In July, a woman and her son were murdered by her husband's employee in Delhi's Lajpat Nagar. The police said that the accused committed the crime hours after he was scolded by his employer's wife, Ruchika Sewani. To avenge the insult, he killed Sewani and her son. In another incident in July, two men stabbed each other in Delhi's Tilak Nagar area. The police said that the accused Sandeep and Arif had an argument, which later took an ugly turn. Both men stabbed each other to death. In a shocking incident in April, a 20-year-old youth was shot dead in the Seelampur area of North East Delhi. Driver of Thar that killed motorcyclist in West Delhi surrenders
The driver of a Mahindra Thar that fatally struck a motorcyclist in West Delhi's Moti Nagar late Thursday night surrendered to the police on Saturday night, officials said. The police identified the suspect as Amrinder Singh, 25, a resident of Sudarshan Park. He turned himself in at 11:28 pm on Saturday and was arrested soon after, according to a Delhi Police official. The victim, identified as Bechu Lal, was riding his motorcycle near Jhulelal Mandir on Patel Road when the collision occurred. The impact left his bike mangled and damaged the bumper of the white Thar. Videos taken of the SUV's interior in the aftermath showed a vodka bottle resting on the driver's seat, the police said. 'Following the accident, the driver fled the spot, leaving his car and the victim behind,' an officer said. 'A case of accident has been registered at Moti Nagar police station. Multiple teams were formed to trace and apprehend the absconding driver. Legal action is being taken.' The case comes less than a week after another fatal crash involving a Thar in the capital. On August 10, two homeless men sleeping on a pavement in Chanakyapuri were killed when an SUV rammed into them. The driver, identified as Anil Bachchas, was arrested at the scene. Inside the vehicle, the police said they recovered drugs including cocaine, LSD, methamphetamine, marijuana, and hashish, along with Rs 25,000 in cash and a mobile phone.
