Anglesey stalker left his ex a ‘shadow of her former self'

Mathew Thomas made repeated unwanted contact with Jenny Clarke, who said it had a 'scary' effect on her, after they split up in late 2023.
Thomas, 40, of Rhos Ellen, Gaerwen, was jailed for 14 months at Caernarfon Crown Court today (June 4), having previously admitted stalking.
Prosecutor Laura Knightly said Thomas and Ms Clarke began a relationship in August 2021, but this came to an end in December 2023.
He then stalked her between January and November of 2024, including by making repeated calls on withheld numbers, and sending her constant emails and WhatsApp messages.
Ms Clarke told him to stop contacting her but he continued to do so, telling her that he was a 'changed person' and that he 'wouldn't stop' until their relationship resumed.
In January 2024, he phoned Ms Clarke on an unknown number, asking: 'Who are you seeing?'
Then, in May, he sent her 'unsolicited amounts of money', before asking for it back shortly after.
More calls from an unknown number followed in June, while in July, he sent her flowers with a card which read: 'I love you x'.
Thomas then asked Ms Clarke why a male accepted delivery of the flowers.
He was arrested in late August, and was bailed on the condition that he did not contact Ms Clarke, but he breached this by sending her a follow request on a fitness application, and more WhatsApp messages.
Another arrest followed in November, with Thomas again giving a 'no comment' police interview.
In a statement, Ms Clarke said Thomas' actions had a 'scary' effect on her mental and physical health, and said she is now a 'shadow of her former self'.
Ms Clarke, who attended today's sentencing, added that she is 'constantly on edge', is 'terrified' of Thomas arriving at her home, and is 'paranoid' that he is watching her somehow.
Representing Thomas, who had 14 previous convictions for 24 offences, John Wyn Williams said he is remorseful for his behaviour.
Mr Wyn Williams said Thomas was 'devastated' by the relationship ending, but 'now realises that he reacted in the wrong way'.
He added that Thomas is a 'hard worker' who provides for his three children.
Sentencing, Judge Timothy Petts labelled Thomas' behaviour 'obsessive'.
Judge Petts told him: 'You wouldn't accept that the relationship was over. This has had a very sig impact on her, and not just at the time you were doing it.'
Thomas is to pay £500 in compensation, while a 10-year restraining order was made for Ms Clarke's protection.

The 19-year-old was reported missing on May 9 and was last spotted in the Longcraft area near Falkirk. The family of missing teenager Cole Cooper has been informed a body was found in a wooded area earlier today. The 19-year-old was reported missing last month on May 9 and was last spotted in the Longcraft area near Falkirk. Formal identification has yet to take place after a man's body was discovered in a wooded area near Kilsyth Road in Banknock at around 4.15pm on Friday, June 6. ‌ The grim discovery was made just a 15 minutes walk away from the last confirmed sighting of the teenager. Police Scotland said: "Around 4.15pm on Friday, 6 June, 2025, the body of a man was discovered in a wooded area near Kilsyth Road in Banknock. ‌ "Formal identification has yet to take place however the family of missing man Cole Cooper, 19, has been informed. Enquiries remain ongoing to establish the full circumstances." We told yesterday how the tragic teen's family said they had lived through a five weeks of "hell" and were planning to launch a fresh search for him. He went missing after visiting a pub in the Denny area before heading to a friend's party at around 3am last month. This Sunday would have marked five "long and painful" weeks since loved ones last heard from Cole. He last made contact on May, 4 and his cousin Aimee Tennie was hoping to gather the largest search for Cole yet and she launched an emotional plea for volunteers and support. On a dedicated Facebook page set up to help the search for Cole, Aimee said: "Every second, every minute, and every hour is becoming more painful. Just like that May 2025 is over and we begin a new month, a new month where Cole is still missing. We can't even begin to imagine this lasting any longer than it already has. We were living as normal only a month ago before this hell. "So, we are asking all of you, once again to come together in solidarity, in hope, that this week, is our last week of searching please think, if this was your child, what lengths you would go to, to bring them home we can't do this alone. We need all of you. ‌ "Please join our family once again to look for our Cole We are hoping this is our largest gathering yet, so please share, speak to friends, to family, to colleagues, bring who you can. We thank you all again for your amazing support." The family were also planning to give out ribbons containing a message pleading with Cole to return home, that could be tied across several search locations. ‌ Aimee added: "As well as searching for Cole, the family are inviting loved ones and volunteers to tie a ribbon for him with a message of "hope encouragement, or love to come home to us." Cole was captured on alarming ring doorbell footage on the morning of Sunday, May 4 around 6am in the Longcroft area. He was filmed trying to access his father's house unsuccessfully. A chilling video later later emerged of the teen in the Cumbernauld Road of the town area "running" and looking "spooked". Detectives investigating his disappearance say he was seen several days later on Wednesday, May 7. He had been at the intersection with Cumbernauld Road, in the Longcroft area. Police said he asked a schoolfriend for a lift around 8.45pm that evening.

'How do I know my mum isn't dead in a ditch after Israel arrested her?'

Seren Murphy, 43, was relaxing at home on a Saturday night when she got a message on the WhatsApp family group chat from her mum. She'd been arrested by Israel. Seren's mum, Máire Ní Mhurchú, 70, flew to the occupied West Bank in early May to do what she has done for 20 years – help Palestinians. But no one heard from the mum-of-three, grandmother-of-eight and great-grandmother-of-two for days after she was detained and threatened with deportation on Saturday, an order she is fighting in the courts. Seren, a librarian in Swansea, told Metro: 'How do I know she's not dead in a ditch somewhere? 'When you look at what's happening in Gaza, the fact that they have murdered aid workers and medical staff, what's to stop them from bumping off a little old lady?' As much as Seren's phone has been 'red-hot' recently from her frantically checking it, she knows her mum will be fine. She said: 'My mum is my hero. She's got the biggest heart of anybody I've ever met – Palestine is part of her life and soul.' Almost every autumn, Mhurchú, who goes by D Murphy, goes to the West Bank to help pick olives off the terraced hillsides. But the olives were unharvested when she landed last month. Seren said: 'The joy is disappearing. They're living in fear… Some of the villages she's been to have been bulldozed to the ground. Some people she knows are dead.' One village is Khalet Al-Daba'a in Masafer Yatt, home to 14 families before Israeli forces demolished 90% of the homes and infrastructure. Murphy, from Douglas in Cork, was joined by her friend Susanne Björk on May 28 to volunteer for the International Solidarity Movement (ISM). Björk, 48, told Metro Israeli settlers she filmed 'terrorising' Palestinian villagers stole her phone on May 30. She reported them to the police. But at 6.30am the next day, masked soldiers kicked down their door and gave them 10 seconds to get out. Israeli settlers serving as reservists reportedly told them to leave as they were in a 'military area' before police arrested them. Björk said: 'But the police and soldiers the day before had not mentioned this. How are we to know we were not supposed to be there?' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Inside the station, they saw two Palestinian boys, aged about 13. Björk recalled: 'An officer told me: 'These are terrorists. If we don't zip-tie them, they'll run.' We were in the middle of an illegal settlement. There was nowhere for them to go.' Israel has classified the area as a military zone since the 1980s, complicating residents' ability to remain. Khalet Al-Daba'a is inactive, according to a 2022 map. At a Sunday hearing in Tel Aviv, the court accused them of being in a military zone and threatening soldiers and police. Björk said: 'Which is a ridiculous thing to say because these are heavily armed people and I'm a 48-year-old woman with a 70-year-old.' After agreeing to board the next available flight, Björk was deported. Murphy is in Givon Prison and was denied counsel on Wednesday, ISM said. Björk said: 'I fear for D. She's a 70-year-old woman in detention – we had to fight to use the toilet.' On Wednesday, Seren's aunt received a call – it was Murphy, saying she had not spoken with her lawyer since Monday. Seren said: 'I'm reassured knowing she's still alive. It's surreal to think that way about your mum. 'But alongside those feelings is also anger at the fact we're in this situation and what is happening every day in Palestine.' Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 250 people hostage. Israel has killed nearly 54,700 Palestinians, mainly women and children. ISM told Metro: 'Israel labels indigenous Palestinians, their supporters and those who tell the truth about the genocide unfolding in occupied Palestine as criminals, uses force to silence and remove them from occupied Palestine.' More Trending Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade told Metro officials are providing consular assistance. It said: 'As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases.' The IDF, the Israel Police and Sweden's Ministry for Foreign Affairs have been approached for comment. Man who filmed children at Barshaw Park walks free after sheriff ruling

Sheriff Sukhwinder Gill ruled there was no criminal intent, describing the incident as a case of "naivety" and granting an absolute discharge. A tourist who was seen filming a small child in a park has walked free from court after a sheriff ruled no criminality had taken place. Janpreet Singh, 29, was confronted by a furious dad after he was spotted taking a video of the youngster at Barshaw Park in Paisley. ‌ The man filmed Singh and shared the footage on social media in a bid to identify him, sparking huge concern in the community. ‌ Singh had travelled from India to visit his sister who identified him from the video and went to police in March. She told officers he had been making videos to share with family in India. Officers later found the video of the child along with two others showing swans and park scenes. Singh appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court and admitted filming the child. But when he appeared for sentencing, Sheriff Sukhwinder Gill ruled no criminality had taken place and granted Singh an absolute discharge. The rare move means that he will receive no punishment. His lawyer had previously claimed there had been a 'certain level of naivety' involved in what Singh, who spent two nights in custody over the case, was doing. ‌ Sheriff Gill told him: "You went to Barshaw Park, you recorded videos and intended to send them to your family in India. "I don't believe there was anything more to it than that. As a consequence of these proceedings you have chosen not to go home. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! "I also question why your image was uploaded on social media, which in itself seemed to have caused huge concern in the local community that there was an Asian male in the park who may be a 'paedophile'." The sheriff added: "I was going to admonish you, but I am going to take the unusual and exceptional step, not to proceed to conviction and grant you an absolute discharge. "The reason for that is that I am not satisfied there was any criminality involved here. That is the end of the matter."
