StanChart projects 6% GDP growth in Philippines in 2025

Standard Chartered Bank (StanChart ) recently projected that the Philippine gross domestic product (GDP) will expand by 6 per cent this year.
The forecast is at the midpoint of the government's 5.5-6.5-per cent target.
The second-quarter (Q2 2025) GDP growth is seen at 5.9 per cent, faster than Q1's 5.4 per cent, despite some normalisation in import activity after an election-related surge, StanChart economist and foreign exchange analyst Jonathan Koh told a virtual press briefing recently.
Standard Chartered Bank has projected that the Philippine GDP will grow by 6 per cent in 2025. The forecast is at the midpoint of the government's 5.5-6.5-per cent target. The Q2 2025 GDP growth is seen at 5.9 per cent, faster than Q1's 5.4 per cent. Headline inflation to ease further and average 1.8 per cent for the year, well below the central bank's 2-4-per cent target band, the bank projected.
'Growth at 6 per cent is still possible for the year as the base effect is actually low,' he said, noting private consumption will remain steady and could contribute to around four percentage points to GDP.
StanChart projected headline inflation to ease further and average 1.8 per cent for the year, well below the central bank's 2-4-per cent target band. This benign inflation outlook should give the central bank enough policy space to further unwind its tight monetary stance, according to a domestic media ooutlet.
StanChart foresees a total of 75 basis points in additional rate cuts this year, to be delivered in three 25-basis-point reductions in August, October and December. This would bring the key policy rate down to 4.5 per cent from 5.25 per cent now.
However, Koh said that concerns over imported inflation, especially if the peso weakens against the dollar, could prompt the BSP to be more cautious in its easing cycle.
Upside risks include potential electricity rate adjustments and any legislated minimum wage hike, although the chances for both appear limited for now.

BSP chief Mayawati slams United States trade tariffs, urges Union govt. to use it as opportunity for self-reliance

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati on Thursday (July 31, 2025) criticized the newly imposed trade tariffs by the United States and urged the Indian government to protect national interests, particularly those of farmers and small businesses. The BSP leader added that such economic pressures by the United States should be met with resilience and transformed into opportunities for self-reliance. 'Despite the United States being described as a 'friendly' nation, the newly emerged challenge by US President Donald Trump imposing a 25 percent duty on Indian imports and a penalty on importing oil from Russia should be met with resilience and transformed into opportunities for self-reliance,' wrote Ms. Mayawati, on X, adding the country hopes the Union Government will live up to the assurance that no section, especially small and medium enterprises and the agricultural sector, will be adversely affected. The former four-time U.P. CM said India is a country of the world's largest population of hardworking people and if a policy is formulated to take the country forward on the basis of labour force providing work to every hand and implemented properly, then the country can certainly become a happy and prosperous with self-reliance as well as 'Sarvajan Hitaay and Sarvajan Sukhaay', in which the public and national interest is completely inherent and can also remain safe as per the humanitarian and welfare objective of the Constitution. United States President Donald Trump on July 30 announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods from August 1, with an additional but unspecified 'penalty' for its defence and energy imports from Russia.
