His ‘First and Only Date' with a Man Led to Forever

When Michael Allan Kaye and Parker Steven Simoni matched on Tinder in June 2014, it was the first time that Mr. Kaye had attempted to date another man.
He had just graduated from the State University of New York at Albany and was living in an apartment in Nyack, N.Y.
Mr. Simoni, a rising senior at the State University of New York at Cortland, was staying with his family for the summer about an hour away from Nyack in Pleasant Valley, N.Y., where he was raised.
Mr. Kaye had only recently learned of Tinder, which was founded in 2012: 'I was still closeted,' he said. In fact, he was just about to delete the app when he matched with Mr. Simoni. The two ended up messaging each other in the app before exchanging numbers and texting all night.
They made plans to meet that Sunday, the only time Mr. Simoni had because he was leaving the next day to return to school for a month to prepare to be an assistant for new student orientation. 'But then I got a message saying, 'I'm sick. I can't meet up,'' Mr. Simoni recalled.
Mr. Kaye was not sick. 'I was just too nervous,' he said. 'I apologized a few hours later and said I was in the closet. He said he would be patient with me and go at my pace.'

32 Memorable Style Moments From ‘And Just Like That …'

The Dior newspaper dress Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) wore after ruining Natasha Naginsky's (Bridget Moynahan) lunch. Carrie's cowboy-chic look in the Hamptons. The white tulle skirt from the opening credits. When 'Sex and the City' premiered in 1998, it almost instantly joined the fashion canon. The clothes were as outrageous, funny, generous and bold as the women wearing them. On Thursday its reboot, 'And Just Like That …,' took its final bow, and Ms. Parker said goodbye to Carrie Bradshaw, the sex-columnist-turned-author, once again. The reboot inspired both devotion and derision, never quite reaching the cultural stratosphere of its originator. But it also offered something else entirely: a fresh, maximalist approach to dressing that reflected a new era of New York, where logomania, loud prints and costume-like accessorizing were part of everyday street style, even as trends like 'quiet luxury' were gaining momentum. Under the costume designers Molly Rogers and Danny Santiago, the series produced its own memorable style moments. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Want to Find the Love of Your Life? Look Up.

The first date after a breakup can be tough. For Blithe Saxon, a poet and singer-songwriter living in London, her Hinge date on Monday was a struggle, and not just because her wounds are still fresh. Rather, she was less than thrilled by how the date came about: Ms. Saxon much prefers making connections in real life or through friends. 'Now the sun's shining, I find myself sitting in West London outside of these little bistros and I watch people pass by, and if anyone's cute, I might try and pick up the courage to go over,' Ms. Saxon, 30, said. 'But I've not found anyone that I think is worth embarrassing myself in front of everyone.' Cutting through the fog of dating-app fatigue, there has been a surge of real-life dating events. Some people are joining run clubs or book clubs with the explicit intention to flirt. Speed-dating events and mixers are held regularly in cities across the country. But even those options for real-life meet-cutes still aren't spontaneous enough for some people, who are opting for even simpler strategies for interacting with strangers — ones that don't add a single minute to their screen time totals. Maybe it's making a point of not looking at your phone in the elevator. Or perhaps it's committing to spend the entirety of your subway ride without headphones on, one day a week. While either might seem inconceivable in the 21st century, putting down your digital defenses may create the opportunity for a chance encounter — if that's what you're after. Want all of The Times?
