Harry Potter Series Will Not Be 'Secretly Infused' with J.K. Rowling's 'Personal Political Views,' Says HBO Chief
The head of HBO is speaking out following backlash over J.K. Rowling's latest anti-transgender comments.
Casey Bloys, the CEO of the network, weighed in on the Harry Potter author's involvement in the upcoming HBO series on the April 30 episode of The Town podcast, days after Nicola Coughlan and Pedro Pascal both slammed Rowling, 59, for her support of the U.K. Supreme Court ruling that trans women are not legally women.
"The decision to be in business with J.K. Rowling is not new for us. We've been in business for 25 years," Bloys said on the podcast, after he was asked if he's constantly monitoring the author's X account to see what else she posts.
"We already have a show on HBO from her called C.B. Strike that we do with the BBC."

As it relates to the upcoming series adaptation of her bestselling book series — which Rowling serves as an executive producer on — Bloys clarified, "Harry Potter is not being secretly infused with anything."
"I think it's pretty clear that those are her personal political views. She's entitled to them," he added. "And if you want to debate her, you can go on Twitter."
Rowling first faced backlash in 2020 over anti-transgender comments she made on X, which has since then become a frequent point of conflict for many of the Harry Potter movie stars. Rupert Grint, Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe all spoke out in support of the transgender community quickly afterwards.

Controversy over the author has again caught steam amid HBO's development of the new Harry Potter series, as well as in response to her April tweets, which Pascal slammed as "awful" and disgusting" as he called Rowling a "heinous loser."
John Lithgow, who will play the iconic Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in the series, didn't have a very strong stance on the subject, though.
He told The Times that he "absolutely" did "not" expect to face questions about the author's political views when he took on the role, and instead found himself wondering, "Why is this a factor at all?"

"I wonder how J.K. Rowling has absorbed it. I suppose at a certain point I'll meet her and I'm curious to talk to her," Lithgow, 79, said.
When asked point-blank if the backlash made him rethink the gig, he said, 'Oh, heavens no.'

Russell Simmons sues HBO for $20 million over doc alleging sexual misconduct
NEW YORK — Russell Simmons has filed a lawsuit against HBO and the makers of the 2020 documentary 'On the Record,' claiming defamation for their allegations of sexual assault and misconduct. The record executive, who's seeking $20 million in damages, is also accusing them of ignoring or suppressing evidence from witnesses who 'refuted and rebutted the accusations falsely made' against Simmons, according to lawsuit filed in New York. 'Despite voluminous support for Mr. Simmons in the form of credible information, persuasive evidence, witness statements and calls for further investigation by notable members of the media, politics and the civil rights movement, the defendants simply disregarded it, and released, and continue to re-release globally, a film that tremendously disparaged and damaged Mr. Simmons with salacious and defamatory accusations that he vehemently denies,' his attorneys, Imran Ansari and Carla DiMare, said in a written statement to Variety. In the complaint, Ansari claims the streamer ignored multiple polygraph tests that 'would have been discovered with due diligence and adherence to accepted journalistic standards.' The documentary made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January of 2020 and detailed sexual assault and misconduct allegations against the Def Jam Records founder from multiple women. The project was originally to be produced as a part of Oprah Winfrey's deal with Apple TV, but the media mogul later withdrew from the film and it ultimately landed at HBO Max. Along with the $20 million, Simmons is requesting a court order to have the title removed from all of HBO's platforms. Simmons has faced multiple lawsuits accusing him of misconduct. More than 20 women have come forward alleging sexual assault, many of whom participated in the documentary. A spokesperson for Warner Bros., the parent of HBO, told TMZ the company 'stand[s] by the filmmakers and their process, and will vigorously defend ourselves against these unfounded allegations.'

Sens. Todd Young (Ind.) and Ted Cruz (Texas) are leading Republican efforts to brand June as 'Life Month' during the already celebrated Pride Month, which honors the achievements and culture of the LGBTQ+ community. 'Every human life is worthy of protection, and it is especially incumbent upon Americans and lawmakers to protect the most vulnerable among us,' Cruz said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter. According to Young's statementintroducing the resolution, 'Life Month' is meant to 'recognize the dignity of human life, commends those who promote life, and encourages policymakers to continue providing resources to empower women and families to choose life.' While the senators did have 11 other months they could designate as 'Life Month,' they said the resolution marks June as the anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wadein June 2022. Cruz and Young's pitch rings similar to Illinois Congresswoman Mary Miller's resolution, which suggested fully replacing 'Pride Month' with 'Family Month.' 'By recognizing June as Family Month, we reject the lie of 'Pride' and instead honor God's timeless and perfect design,' Miller told right-wing news site The Daily Wire. Neither Cruz nor Young said they want to replace Pride Month, but their actions come at a time where the Trump administration has launched aggressive attacks against the LGBTQ+ community. Under his administration, President Donald Trump has erased or altered Centers for Disease Control and Prevention pages focused on the risks of suicide among LGBTQ children, school safety and health disparities. He has also signed executive orders that declared it official U.S. policy that there are only two sexes, male and female, and banned people with gender dysphoria from military service. Earlier this week, Trump's Department of Education also formally declared June as 'Title IX Month.'On Tuesday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the Navy to rename the USNS Harvey Milk, which honors the slain LGBTQ+ rights icon. This move reportedly was intentionally made during Pride Month. A total of 26 Republican senators co-sponsored the resolution, including Alabama's Tommy Tuberville and South Carolina's Lindsey Graham. 'If we are going to dedicate entire months to recognizing every group under the sun, the least we can do is dedicate June to protecting unborn babies,' Tuberville said on X.
