Addressing the media on Thursday, Shettar termed the high court's verdict a 'strong rebuke' to the Siddaramaiah-led government. "This is a big slap on the face of the government, which seems to have acted without following due legal process. Before making such a decision, it is essential to consult the legal department. It appears that proper procedure was not followed," he said.
The senior BJP leader criticised the state government's decision to withdraw cases, alleging that the move was driven by appeasement politics.
"Most of the accused in these cases are Muslims. If the govt keeps favouring them in criminal matters, how will lessons be learned? There must be consequences for unlawful actions," he said.
Shettar also expressed concern over what he described as the weakening of law and order in Karnataka. "This kind of approach encourages fringe elements and erodes the public's fear of law. The rising incidents of rape and murder in the state are a reflection of that," he added.

Karnataka's NEP alternative: Thorat panel to submit report by mid-June after multiple delays

After several missed deadlines, the Sukhdev Thorat-led Karnataka state education policy committee is set to submit its final report in the second week of June. Constituted in October 2023 as part of the Congress government's pre-poll promise to replace the National Education Policy (NEP), the committee was initially expected to submit its report by February 2024. The deadline was then pushed to May 2024, with an interim report submitted in the meantime. The panel later sought a six-month extension, and the final deadline was extended to May 31, 2025. Higher Education Minister M C Sudhakar on Monday confirmed that the committee will submit the report to the chief minister soon. He was speaking at the launch of a quarterly magazine published by the Karnataka State Higher Education Council. In October 2023, the Karnataka government, led by the Congress, established a 15-member State Education Policy Commission under the chairmanship of Prof Sukhdev Thorat, former University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman, to draft a new education policy to replace NEP 2020. The commission includes prominent educationists and experts like Prof Yogendra Yadav, Sonam Wangchuk, and Dr Sudhir Krishnaswamy. The Congress-led government announced its intent to withdraw NEP 2020, citing concerns over its hasty implementation, lack of state consultation, and infrastructural challenges. Karnataka, notably the first state to adopt NEP 2020 in 2021 under the BJP government, decided to revert to a state-specific policy to prioritise equity, accessibility, and constitutional values. Based on the SEP Commission's interim report, the Karnataka government scrapped the NEP's four-year undergraduate degree program and reverted to a three-year degree structure for the 2024-25 academic year. This change was driven by concerns over infrastructure, faculty shortages, and reduced access to education for disadvantaged groups due to the extended duration. Meanwhile, Sudhakar also announced that the government had secured approval to borrow Rs 2,600 crore from the Asian Development Bank to strengthen technical education in the state. A team from the bank is expected to visit Karnataka later this month to review the proposal.

Rahul Gandhi launches 'Sangthan Srijan Abhiyan' in Madhya Pradesh

Former Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, launched the Congress Party's Organisation Rejuvenation Campaign (Sangthan Srijan Abhiyan) in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday. He strongly criticised the BJP-led central government over the issue of caste census, stating that he supports it to expose the true social fabric of the country. Addressing members of the State Congress Committee, district and block presidents, and AICC members at Ravindra Bhavan, Rahul said, 'If a caste census is conducted, the BJP's Adani-Ambani model will collapse because the country will realise that 90 per cent of the population is not benefiting, while all the wealth is concentrated among 5 to 10 per cent of people. In such a scenario, the public will naturally stop them.' Regarding Madhya Pradesh, Rahul remarked, 'There is no shortage of Congress ideology, leaders, or workers in the state. The very people sitting in this room have the talent to defeat the BJP, but their hands are tied because their voices are not properly heard within the Congress organisation. This is our army, ready to fight and sacrifice, but a few individuals keep making misleading statements. Some do so out of frustration, while others indirectly work for the BJP. Therefore, the working committee has decided to start with appointing district presidents and strengthen the party from there in Madhya Pradesh.' Rahul emphasised the need to distinguish between racehorses and ceremonial horses, saying Congress has three types of horses: ceremonial horses, racehorses, and lame horses. He asserted that each must be placed in their rightful category—racehorses should compete, while lame horses should be retired. He also stressed the importance of strengthening Congress committees at the block and district levels, stating that candidates for Lok Sabha and Assembly elections will be selected based on recommendations from these committees. During a meeting with state legislators, Abhay Mishra, MLA from Semaria constituency in Rewa district, expressed concerns: 'We do not see any leader in Madhya Pradesh who can lead us to victory in elections.' Rahul responded, 'You may not see them, but I can identify at least 10 leaders who have the capability to form a government and lead in Madhya Pradesh.' Rahul Gandhi has personally taken charge of the Organisation Rejuvenation Campaign, aimed at strengthening the party at the grassroots ahead of the next Assembly elections scheduled for 2028. During his six-hour visit to Bhopal, he addressed five different meetings, including sessions with the Political Affairs Committee, legislators, and party workers.

SC refuses to halt insolvency proceedings against Future Ideas, a part of erstwhile Kishore Biyani-led Future Group

The Supreme Court has refused to stay the insolvency proceedings initiated against Future Ideas Company Ltd (FICL), a part of the erstwhile Kishore Biyani-led Future Group. However, it sought response from Axis Trustee Services and resolution professional Ritesh Agarwal on an appeal by Anil Biyani , the suspended director of FICL. A Bench led by Justice Sanjay Karol posted the matter for further hearing on August 8. Senior counsel Siddharth Luthra and counsel Pallavi Pratap, on behalf of Anil, sought stay on the constitution of the Committee of Creditors and stay on the insolvency proceedings. The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal had on May 19 upheld the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal's order that admitted FICL into insolvency on a plea by Axis Trustee Services, which had cited a default of Rs 122.83 crore as of September 2022. While seeking setting aside of the appellate tribunal's order, Anil in his appeal stated that the NCLAT does not have the power under Section 7 of the IBC to declare a contract which is acted upon by all relevant parties as void. 'The same is a power vested only in a civil court. Such power of the NCLT/NCLAT, if any, under the Code would only arise when the corporate debtor's insolvency resolution has begun,' it added. According to the appeal, the NCLAT had sought strict compliance of the Debenture Trust cum Mortgage Deed (DTMD) from FICL but has failed to consider its terms and non-compliance of Axis Trusteeship to provide authority to file the proceedings before the NCLT seeking initiation of CIRP of FICL. In 2018, a debenture trustee agreement was executed between FICL and Axis Trustee Services, which was a debenture trustee on behalf of debenture holders Franklin India Short Term Income Plan and Franklin India Income Opportunities Plan. The debt arose from non-convertible debentures issued by FICL across four series in 2018, which were due for redemption starting January 31, 2020. FUCL was required to redeem the debentures and pay interest as specified in the Transaction Documents. However, due to a default in redemption of debentures on April 30, 2021, an Event of Default was allegedly triggered. It was alleged that despite a notice in 2022 demanding payment, FICL failed to comply with the same. Consequently, Axis Trustee moved the tribunal to start insolvency proceedings against FICL.
