The Federal President of the Republic of Austria, Alexander Van der Bellen, was received by Western Cape Premier Alan Winde on Saturday at the official Leeuwenhof residence, where they discussed opportunities for investment and job creation.
This comes as Van der Bellen and the first lady of Austria, Doris Schmidauer, arrived in the country as part of a four-day working State Visit with the Austrian delegation to consolidate the long-standing and strong relationship between South Africa and Austria.
Premier Alan Winde, who, alongside his wife Tracy, met with the Austrian leader and Schmidauer, said that their meeting was great. He added that there's strong interest in green energy and advanced manufacturing, which are both key sectors for growing the Western Cape economy and creating work for residents.
'We've got a linkage between Upper Austria, one of their states, and ourselves. We'll be hosting further engagements in an investment conference, with Governor Thomas Stelzer, later in the year.
'It's about growing economy, and about working together - partnerships out of Europe and here in the southern part of Africa. This is all about the economy. It is all about growth, and it is all about jobs.'
Van der Bellen said that it was good to meet with Winde to talk about the potential for cooperation.
'Austrian companies are more than eager to explore new opportunities, particularly in sectors such as green energy and advanced manufacturing.'
The delegation also visited several venues and organisations of interest, including the Artscape, where they met with key Artscape staff, such as the CEO, Marlene le Roux, as well as the Artscape Council, including its chairperson, Zak Gordon.
They shared some insight into Artscape's operations, both theatrical and administrative, as well as a short tour of the building, ending off with some light refreshments to portray Cape Town's hospitality.
Van der Bellen was welcomed by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, and also visited Freedom Park where Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton Mackenzie was present.
'Austria and South Africa enjoy strong bilateral trade and investment relations spanning energy, industrial technology, pharmaceuticals and vocational training. Bilateral trade between South Africa and Austria has been steadily increasing.
'A number of leading Austrian companies are involved in South Africa, through direct investments, distribution and sales offices, or in projects and other services,' Ramaphosa said.
'There are many more opportunities for investment by Austrian companies in South Africa. There are opportunities in areas such as renewable energy generation, agro-processing and component manufacturing opportunities.
'There are also opportunities in critical minerals beneficiations, pharmaceuticals, technology and innovation, among others,' Ramaphosa said.
'We want to see more Austrian tourists coming to South Africa and more South Africans visiting Austria. We are particularly keen to explore eco, sports and heritage tourism.'
Ramaphosa said they signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of technical and vocational training.
'We want to learn from Austria on how to achieve the delicate balance between building the workforce of the future and growing the skills needed by the economy today.
'As the South African government, we have consistently affirmed the importance of collaboration with the private sector to drive economic growth and job creation.'

Botswana President Duma Boko stuns in skinny jeans and sneakers during Zambia visit

Botswana President Duma Boko has sparked a debate after making a bold fashion statement during his visit to Zambia for the 97th Agricultural and Commercial Show. Boko was spotted wearing a pair of skinny jeans with a torn design, Palladium boots, a sweater and cap, while other guests, including Zambia President Hakainde Hichilema, were dressed in suits. His look sparked mixed reactions among social media users, with some criticising him while others complimented his fashion sense. Boko is no stranger to making headlines. The 55-year-old president is known for his modest sense of style. Facebook user Mark Kandeke believed Boko wanted to try something different from the typical formal presidential look. 'Unconventional, but it looks like President Boko took 'dress for comfort' to diplomatic heights! Maybe he was trying to prove that it's not the suit that leads the nation; it's the man in it, even if that man is in ripped jeans and sneakers.' Van Huba Ozil Bellerin said Boko should dress however he wants. 'A president is and must also be an ordinary citizen. There's nothing special about suits. You need a president, a leader, not just the suit. Zvenyu Bots.' Alfred Ncube said, 'Not much different from wearing a suit at a military parade, though he must take formal events seriously. He should go to diplomacy school. Next time, he'll go to the White House in jogger shorts.' Milton Njoloma said Boko should have dressed more formally. 'Protocol requires that he dresses in a formal manner. This president was just being disrespectful to his hosts. Next time, he might turn up in shorts and underpants, and that is OK with him. No way.' Israel Pagiwa said, 'This is a ceremonial event. President must put on suit but it's also official as a sign of showing respect not putting jean dress before ceremonial parade. Advise him properly.'

Alexandra residents still waiting for title deeds

A long-running dispute over housing ownership in Alexandra's K206 housing development has left many residents without title deeds, despite being allocated homes as far back as 2010. The development includes three types of units: stand-alone houses, flats, and rental units. While title deeds have been prepared for those living in stand-alone houses and flats, residents in rental units remain in limbo. The confusion stems from how the City of Johannesburg handled the original housing allocations 15 years ago. According to activist and long-time resident Judith Madiakgotla, the initial plan was for beneficiaries living in flats to also own the adjacent rental units. However, during the rushed development ahead of the 2010 World Cup, the city allocated people to both flats and rental units without clarifying that occupants in rental units are tenants, not rightful owners of the units. 'There was a situation where councillors brought in their own lists of people they called 'special cases'. That's where the mix-up started. Some were [flat owners], and others were allocated rental units.' Also read: FEATURE: Is the Johannesburg Property Company the worst performing city entity? She stated that it was only after residents had moved in, did the city clarify that those in flats were the rightful owners of both the flat and the rental unit next to it. She said residents have taken their complaints to the Rental Housing Tribunal, the Public Protector, and the Human Rights Commission. While title deeds are reportedly ready for those in stand-alone units, as well as those in flats, Madiakgotla said they aren't there for those in the rental units. 'The dispute is simmering. We want title deeds for everyone that was allocated in 2010 by the City of Johannesburg, and is on the database.' Democratic Alliance Gauteng Shadow MEC for Human Settlement Mervyn Cirota recently visited the area and acknowledged the problem. Cirota said the issue affects up to 6 000 households. 'We need to get the city and the province involved in this. There needs to be a forensic audit and we need to go back to 2010 to determine exactly what the roll out [process] was. Who is entitled to ownership and what the distinction is between the ownership of the so-called [flats and stand-alone] units and the rental units, because there is some confusion about that.' Alex News reached out to the Department of Human Settlements for comment. Further updates will be provided once they become available. 3RC marks 25 years of empowering youth through education and innovation

3RC, an organisation known for its career guidance roadshows and youth development initiatives, recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with a media breakfast in Parkhurst. The event, held at Nice on 4th Avenue on July 31, brought together media guests and stakeholders for a morning of reflection and future planning. Founder and CEO Kay Cheytanov shared how the organisation grew from a music-based school tour into a full-scale educational platform aimed at inspiring learners across South Africa. Cheytanov, who began her career in music, said the idea for 3RC was sparked in 2001 after recognising the need to engage learners in more creative ways. The organisation has since hosted thousands of shows in schools, launched interactive expos, and introduced programmes such as High Five, which focuses on emotional wellbeing in children. 'We constantly adapt our shows to stay relevant. Today's learners respond to different methods, and we aim to meet them where they are.'
