NASCAR: Denny Hamlin Breaks Silence on Heated Pit Lane Clash in Sonoma

Newsweek3 days ago
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources.
NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin has revealed his views on the pit lane clash during the Cup Series race at Sonoma. A conflict erupted between the pit crews of RFK Racing and Joe Gibbs Racing after Ty Gibbs and Brad Keselowski had pitted.
The pit stalls of both teams were next to each other, a point that contributed to the conflict. When Keselowski's crew awaited his arrival, Gibbs came into the pits before him and grazed tire changer Telvin McClurkin while passing through the RFK Racing stall.
Keselowski came in a few seconds later. Once he set off, McClurkin confronted the JGR crew members, which escalated into a fight. NASCAR officials intervened to settle the dispute. The sport stated that Gibbs was not at fault for grazing the tire held by McClurkin, considering the lack of sufficient space.
Now, Hamlin has revealed his take on his Actions Detrimental podcast, concluding that both teams were "trying to gain an advantage." He said:
Denny Hamlin, driver of the #11 ampm Toyota, greets fans as he walks onstage during driver intros prior to the NASCAR Cup Series Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway on July 13, 2025 in Sonoma,...
Denny Hamlin, driver of the #11 ampm Toyota, greets fans as he walks onstage during driver intros prior to the NASCAR Cup Series Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway on July 13, 2025 in Sonoma, California. More"You can see where he came in one way one time, came in another way a different time, but he is in front. So, he has the right to use the pit box. It's just bad timing, is the best I can explain it.
"Whenever you're pitted in front of someone and then you're barely in front of them on track, what happens is you have their tire carriers and their jackman kind of standing at the wall. They've changed the rule recently over the last year or two to where they don't want these guys jumping off the wall. That's too much weight, you'll create injuries. So, they let them kind of get ready in their pit box.
"Well, they're trying to get around to the right side of the car before it stops. Brad's team is trying to get their advantage, which is get to the right side as soon as possible. But they're not able to run out there till after the 54 passes, which that definitely does slow them down.
"I didn't see the carrier move from his position, but I think Ty was trying to get the best angle into his box — which he's entitled to — and the contact happened. Who's fault? I don't know. Both sides were trying to gain an advantage."
RFK put its case forward to NASCAR by submitting footage that offers an overhead view of the incident. However, the sport did not accept RFK's argument.

NASCAR not expected to release 2026 Cup schedule until end of summer

The 2026 NASCAR schedule is beginning to take shape, with the Daytona 500 kicking off the festivities and Homestead-Miami Speedway hosting Championship Weekend. Meanwhile, San Diego is expected to be a new entry, while Mexico City could be on the way out. However, when will NASCAR announce the 2026 schedule this year? According to Kelly Crandall, the 2026 NASCAR schedule is not expected until the end of the summer or early fall. In 2024, NASCAR announced the 2025 schedule in late August, which could be a possible date this year. If it comes out in the early fall, this would undoubtedly occur during the heart of the NASCAR playoffs. The potential 2026 NASCAR schedule is full of intrigue. It could feature a revamped playoff format and the return of Chicagoland Speedway, but that is currently up in the air. For now, NASCAR is working to finalize the 2026 schedule, and there is high optimism that it will be a very successful endeavor. NASCAR Predictions for Dover: Cup Series Winner, In-Season Challenge Final 4 Picks

The NASCAR schedule this weekend takes us to Dover Motor Speedway, delivering the Round of 4 in the NASCAR In-Season Challenge and a pivotal points race as the regular season winds down. With the Cup Series headed back to an oval course, a sense of normalcy should return to the track this weekend. Let's dive into our NASCAR predictions for Sunday's Cup Series race at Dover Motor Speedway. Challenge Round of 4: Ty Dillon over John Hunter Nemechek Ty Dillon feels inevitable at this point. No one expected the lowest-seeded driver to make it out of Round 1, but a wreck took out Denny Hamlin. In Round 2, a crash at the Chicago Street Race took out Brad Keselowski and allowed Dillon to automatically advance. Then at Sonoma, Dillon bumped Alex Bowman to slip past his competitor to punch his ticket to the Round of 4. We're not betting against fate at this point. John Hunter Nemechek hasn't been particularly great at Dover anyway, so both the numbers and destiny suggest that Dillon's cinderella story continues. Related: Challenge Round of 4: Ty GIbbs takes out Tyler Reddick This is much more the caliber of matchup people expected when the NASCAR In-Season Challenge seedings were revealed. Tyler Reddick and Ty Gibbs have both earned their way here, and they aren't just battling for the $1 million prize—there is also a playoff spot up for grabs. Gibbs is coming off consecutive top-10 finishes and has posted the second-best average finishing position (8.5) over the last six races. Notably, Gibbs also boasts a better average finishing position than Reddick (11.5 to 14.5) in the Cup Series at Dover Motor Speedway. Both drivers will finish inside the top 16, but Gibbs (13th) edges out Reddick (15th) to advance. Read More: Ross Chastain wins a stage Ross Chastain didn't have the car to win at Sonoma Raceway, so his team played for the Stage 1 win and got a playoff point out of it. While he'll be more of a factor in the finish on Sunday at Dover, the No. 1 car will still fall well short of reaching victory lane. However, Chastain will deliver his second consecutive week with a stage win, giving him 10 stage points and the all-important playoff point. Related: Shane van Gisbergen finishes outside the top 25 It now feels like there is a portion of NASCAR fans who are waiting for Shane van Gisbergen to fail on ovals. That's what winning three races in the last five weeks and blowing away the competition on road courses will do to the fan bases of your competitors. SVG has made real strides on ovals this season, more consistently working into the top 20 late in races. However, this is his first trip to Dover Motor Speedway in the Cup Series, and that will come with its own adjustments. He'll finish outside the top 25, which will be only the second time that's happened since Talladega. Related: Kyle Larson rebounds from a tough stretch with a top-5 finish It's been a pretty rough summer for Kyle Larson, at least by his standards, and he hasn't seemed quite right since his attempt at 'The Double' ended in a pair of wrecks. The turnaround is coming on Sunday. Larson is going to turn an outstanding starting position into a stage win, which he will then carry over into his first top-five finish since Michigan. When all is said and done, Larson will walk away with the highest points total from Sunday's race at Dover. Related: Kyle Busch snags a top-10 finish, delivers strong points day The winless streak for Kyle Busch is closing in on 80 starts. Unfortunately for the No. 8 team, we don't see him snapping it on Sunday. While that means he'll still be battling for a playoff spot based on points, Sunday's EchoPark Automotive 400 will get him a little closer. Coming off consecutive top-10 finishes with 76 total points, Busch will make it three consecutive weeks and add 30-plus points to his total, narrowing the gap between him and Bubba Wallace. Denny Hamlin wins again at Dover Motor Speedway There might not be a driver happier to be headed to Dover than Denny Hamlin. He won the Würth 400 last year, marking his second top-five finish in three races at the track in the Next Gen era. The No. 11 car has also been performing exceptionally well in qualifying on ovals lately, delivering three consecutive top-three starting positions from Nashville through Pocono. Hamlin has always said that a great qualifying effort is usually a strong sign that he has a higher-than-average shot at winning. He'll be near the top of the starting grid on Sunday, turning it into his fourth win of the season. Subaru's third EV is the Uncharted (yep) with 300 miles of range and 338 horsepower

Subaru just screwed up our SEO with the launch of the Uncharted, an electric crossover with up to 300 miles of range that probably has nothing to do with the video game. It uses the same E-TNGA platform as Toyota's CH-R EV and strongly resembles that model. Due to arrive next year, the 2026 Uncharted will come in two versions, both with 74.7kWh batteries. The first is a front-wheel drive version with 228 horsepower and 300 miles of range, while the second is a much grunt-ier dual-motor four wheel drive version with 338 horsepower and a sub-five-second 0-60mph time in either Sport or GT trims, but slightly less range (290 miles). The latter specs are identical to the CH-R EV, by the way. Subaru's 300-mile-range Uncharted is a near clone of Toyota's CH-R EV The Uncharted will come standard with a Tesla-style NACS charging port to give drivers Supercharger access. Fast charging speeds are limited to 150kW but Subaru claims it'll charge from 10-80 percent in under 30 minutes with the use of battery preconditioning. It's definitely a spitting image of the CH-R EV right down to the side cladding, though it has slightly different headlights and a restyled front end. Even the interior has a substantially similar center console that can wirelessly charge two phones plus the same 14-inch infotainment screen with Android Auto/CarPlay support. It has a generous complement of manual controls, unlike Tesla's EVs. Subaru's 300-mile-range Uncharted is a near clone of Toyota's CH-R EV Subaru hasn't released pricing yet for the 2026 Uncharted, but it might be similar to the CH-R EV which starts at $35,000. It's just the company's third electric vehicle, following the three-year-old Solterra and Outback-like Trailseeker, also set to arrive next year.
