PFA lodges 18 FIRs, imposes Rs5.6m fines
A total of 408 food business operators were fined over Rs5.6 million while 18 FIRs were lodged for serious violations of food safety laws, said the Director General of the PFA Asim Javaid while talking to media here on Wednesday.
Director General said that teams examined 64,500kg meat and 782,000 litres of milk discarding 3,416kg substandard meat and 14,400 litres of adulterated milk. A total of 1,188 milk carrier vehicles and 435 milk shops were checked. He said discarded milk was found to be adulterated with water and lacking essential nutrients.
He stated that on Lahore Canal Road, a supplier's vehicle (registration number MNK-3498) was intercepted and found carrying over 38 maunds of dead chickens concealed in sacks for supply. The consignment was confirmed unfit for human consumption after detailed examination and was discarded by incineration in PAMCO furnace.
DG further stated that those endangering public health are enemies of the nation, adding that eliminating such elements from Lahore and the entire province is the top priority of PFA. He said that on the directions of the Chief Minister Punjab, strict action is being taken against all health hazards across Punjab.

Obeid, 41, was killed Wednesday when Israeli forces "targeted people waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip", the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) said in a statement. With Gaza in the throes of a hunger crisis, the UN rights office said last month that Israeli forces had killed more than 1,300 Palestinians trying to get food aid in the territory since late May. An ex-star of the Khadamat Al-Shati club in Gaza, Obeid played 24 international matches for team Palestine, the PFA said. "During his long career, Al-Obeid scored more than 100 goals, making him one of the brightest stars of Palestinian football," it added. The midfielder also played for the Al-Amari Youth Center Club in the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967. While living there in 2010, Obeid was among six players on the national team from Gaza who were turned back at the Jordanian border for "security reasons" on their way to a friendly in Mauritania. An Israeli security official said at the time that the players had failed to renew special permits allowing them to play in the West Bank. "When I heard that we would be forbidden from travelling I was very upset, because any athlete dreams of wearing his national jersey in international forums," Obeid told AFP in 2010. "We want to be able to travel freely with our families, just like athletes anywhere else in the world." Israel had previously allowed the six players to travel with the team. Born in Gaza City, Obeid was married and had five children. Since the start of the Gaza war, triggered by Palestinian militant group Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel, 662 people from the sport and scouting sector have been killed, including 321 in the football community, according to the PFA. Israel's offensive has killed at least 61,258 in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry. The 2023 attack on Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.

PFA lodges 4 FIRs, imposes Rs968,500 fine during crackdown
LAHORE: Enforcement teams of the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) conducted inspections at 920 food points across Lahore Zone during a large scale crackdown against food law violators on Friday. Food safety teams registered four FIRs, imposed fines worth Rs968,500 and arrested one suspect over serious violations of the Punjab Pure Food Regulations, said Director General PFA Asim Javaid. Food safety teams inspected 432,000 litres of milk and discarded 7,650 litres of substandard and adulterated milk. In a separate raid on an oil warehouse in Awan Town, PFA seized and discarded 2,000 litres of poor quality oil. A case was registered against the godown owner, who was arrested on the spot. In Kahna a vehicle carrying fake milk was intercepted at a checkpoint. Milk was discarded and legal action was initiated against the supplier. DG Asim Javed said that poor hygiene conditions were observed at several food points, including moldy freezers, rusty utensils, insect infestation and the use of contaminated water for washing meat. He said that essential records and employee medical certificates were also missing. DG further said that the use of unhygienic and low-grade ingredients poses a serious threat to public health. He said that strict action will continue against all elements involved in food adulteration and that efforts are underway to bring all food operations in line with international safety standards.
