Dallas Wings GM Curt Miller Praises Paige Bueckers After WNBA Debut

Yahoo19-05-2025

Paige Bueckers' first WNBA game may not have ended in a win, but her performance left a strong impression on Dallas Wings general manager Curt Miller.
Following the team's 99–84 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on opening night, Miller spoke with reporters about the early stages of the Wings' rebuild—and singled out Bueckers' leadership and presence in her WNBA debut.

'I'm not gonna critique the basketball near as much,' Miller said, via DallasHoopsJournal.com, 'but you know, I just—I appreciate the command that she has of the game. And again, we're just gonna get better and better. They're all learning to play with each other. Training camps are so fast. But I'm just really excited about the potential. This group is gonna look a lot different in July than they do in May.'
Bueckers, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft, opened the scoring for Dallas with a putback layup and went on to tally 10 points, seven rebounds, and two assists in 31 minutes.
She joined a new-look starting lineup featuring Arike Ogunbowale, DiJonai Carrington, Myisha Hines-Allen, and NaLyssa Smith—all of whom reached double figures in scoring aside from Smith.
While the Wings stayed competitive in the first half—entering the break tied at 46—the Lynx took control in the third quarter behind a dominant run from Napheesa Collier and Courtney Williams. Despite the result, Miller remained focused on long-term development and chemistry.

'They're all learning to play with each other,' he said. 'We're asking players maybe to have a higher role than maybe what has been asked for many of them in the past. And I look forward to watching them embrace that and see if they can step into those opportunities.'

Bueckers' debut was one of several bright spots for a young Dallas team navigating its first steps in a new era. Her performance offered the Wings a glimpse of the leadership they'll be counting on as the season progresses and throughout her career.
The Wings return to action Monday, May 19, against the Seattle Storm at 7:00 p.m. CT.

Manny Machado's 5 RBIs lead Padres' 11-1 rout of pitching-poor Dodgers

SAN DIEGO — Manny Machado had three hits and drove in five runs, Luis Arraez had three hits and scored four times, and the San Diego Padres capitalized on the Los Angeles Dodgers' lack of major league pitchers for an 11-1 victory Tuesday night. Dylan Cease (2-5) struck out 11 and yielded three hits over seven scoreless innings while ending his 11-start winless streak for the Padres, who dominated a bizarre game in this rivalry series.

Angel Reese Records Her Fourth Double-Double of the Season

Angel Reese Records Her Fourth Double-Double of the Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Angel Reese has established herself as the top rebounder in the WNBA. Her skills were evident once more on Tuesday when the Chicago Sky faced off against the New York Liberty. While the result wasn't what any Sky supporter hoped for, this team is still young and has significant potential for development. Players such as Hailey Van Lith and Kamilla Cardoso are set to rise, and Reese is already demonstrating franchise-level talent. The three-time BET Sportswoman of the Year arguably delivered her finest performance of the season against the Liberty. She was a playmaker on offense with three assists and secured a couple of steals thanks to her aggressive defense. The Sky have faced challenges, now sitting at 2-6 for the season, with their only victories against Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings, who currently hold a record of 1-9. Despite the relentless wave of online negativity aimed at her, the former LSU Tigers star continues to motivate her teammates. Advertisement Earlier this week, she addressed some of the negative social media posts she's endured. 'My brand is BUILT love. They can't stop what's already BUILT. The real KNOW the REAL…I really hope that check be worth the amount of lies yall make up EVERYDAY 🤣😭i REALLYYYYY hope.' Reese finished the game with 17 points and 11 rebounds, shooting 8-13 from the field. Although the Sky fell a little short against the reigning WNBA champions, Angel has no reason to feel disappointed. She certainly more than proved her worth tonight and looked to be one of the top players on the court. Chicago will be back in action on Friday as they head to Atlanta to face the Dream.
