Karnataka identifies Karikad in Mangaluru for multimodal logistics park

News183 days ago
Mangaluru (Karnataka), Jul 25(PTI) As part of its ambitious Industrial Policy 2025-30, the Karnataka government has identified Karikad near Mangaluru as a key location for developing a world-class multimodal logistics park to facilitate freight movement and industrial growth, officials said on Friday.
S Selvakumar, Additional Chief Secretary, Commerce and Industries Department, said that Karikad's strategic proximity to the Mangaluru Port, railway infrastructure, and national highways makes it an ideal site.
'The park will serve as a crucial node in the state's logistics corridor, connecting coastal Karnataka with the hinterland," he noted.
Speaking at the CII Mangaluru Infrastructure and Logistics Summit here, Selvakumar said the proposed park is expected to ease freight transport, reduce turnaround time for goods movement, and provide dedicated infrastructure to support Karnataka's growing manufacturing and export sectors.
Selvakumar visited the site along with senior officials from the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB), New Mangalore Port Authority, and other departments to assess feasibility.
According to officials, the government is working closely with various stakeholders to ensure the development aligns with global logistics standards and environmental norms.
The park is also expected to create employment opportunities and attract private investment in the warehousing and logistics sectors. The project falls under the Centre's PM Gati Shakti scheme and is aimed at improving overall supply chain efficiency.
Senior officials said land acquisition and project design will begin soon, and the government plans to expedite clearances to enable early implementation. PTI COR AMP ROH

Over 31,500 govt employees opt for UPS till July 20: FinMin

New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) As many as 31,555 central government employees have opted for the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) till July 20, and the last date to enrol under the scheme is September, Parliament was informed on Monday. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said as on July 20, 2025, at least 7,253 claims have been received and out of which 4,978 claims have been processed for payment of benefits under UPS. From April 1, 2025, the government has introduced UPS as an option under the National Pension System (NPS) for the central government employees. UPS will provide assured payouts to the employees. In reply to a separate question in the House, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said, "as on July 20, 2025, 31,555 employees have opted UPS". Further, Sitharaman said based on the representations from employees and associations, the cut-off date to opt for UPS was extended for a period of three months up to September 30, 2025. "As per eligibility criteria, there are 25,756 retired Central Government subscribers eligible to receive additional benefits under UPS," Sitharaman said. These eligible subscribers are those central government employees who have either superannuated or deceased, or retired under Fundamental Rules 56(j), on or before 31st March 2025, after completing 10 years or more of qualifying service and were covered under NPS, the minister said. The government has extended the benefit of 'Retirement gratuity and Death gratuity' under UPS. Further, the government employees who opt for UPS under NPS shall also be eligible for option for availing benefits under the CCS (Pension) Rules, 2021 or the CCS (Extraordinary Pension) Rules, 2023, in the event of death of the government servant during service or his discharge on the ground of invalidation or disablement. The government has also extended tax benefits to UPS as are available to NPS under the Income Tax Act, 1961. To a question on whether the government proposes to extend such benefits to other pension schemes or sectors in the near future, Sitharaman said, "UPS has been introduced as an option under National Pension System (NPS) for the employees of Central Government who are covered under the NPS. There is no proposal under consideration to extend such benefits to other pension schemes or sector."

India Incs Q1 revenue growth estimated at 4-6 pc: Crisil Intelligence

New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) The revenue growth of India's corporate sector in the first quarter of this fiscal year is estimated at a modest 4-6 per cent, down from about 7 per cent in the previous two quarters, due to sluggish performance by power, IT services and steel sectors, according to Crisil Intelligence. The power, coal, IT services and steel sectors collectively account for a third of the revenue of over 600 companies analysed, Crisil Intelligence said in a statement. Nevertheless, five sectors — pharmaceuticals, telecom services, organised retail, aluminium and airline — likely drove revenue growth for India Inc in the first quarter, it added. 'The early onset of monsoon and lingering geopolitical uncertainties are expected to have materially impacted some sectors in April-June," Crisil Intelligence Director Pushan Sharma said. Rain-induced cooler summer culled demand for electricity. Consequently, the power sector's revenue is seen declining 8 per cent year-on-year. The lower demand also pushed down spot prices of electricity, and led to a 2-3 per cent lower demand for coal, Sharma said. 'On the other hand, geopolitical uncertainties impacted the IT services sector, where revenue growth is seen flat on-year due to project delays stemming from tariff worries, which led to a slowdown in activity," he added. Crisil Intelligence said the steel sector's revenue is expected to have grown a moderate 1-3 per cent on-year, due to planned maintenance shutdowns at major steel mills and a 2-4 per cent on-year decline in prices. On the other hand, the auto sector's revenue is estimated to rise by 4 per cent on-year owing to higher retail sales, partially offset by high inventory, it said, adding 'an increase in prices stemming from changes in product mix and higher export realisations likely helped revenue grow". The construction sector revenue is expected to climb up 6 per cent on-year as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) companies benefited from a low base effect caused by disruptions from general elections in the first quarter of last fiscal despite no significant increase in the Union Budget allocation for the sector, it added. In the first quarter, revenue for pharmaceuticals sector is seen up 9-11 per cent on-year, higher than corporate India's revenue growth for the past 10 quarters, driven by strong export demand and a stable domestic market, Crisil Intelligence said. It further said telecom services revenue is expected to grow 12 per cent on-year, fuelled by higher realisations of around 11 per cent on account of costlier subscription plans. Organised retail revenue likely rose 15-17 per cent in the first quarter, led by the value fashion and food and grocery segments, it added. Revenue expansion in the steel, cement and FMCG sectors was likely driven by volume growth of 7-9 per cent, 3-4 per cent and 4-5 per cent respectively. In the cement sector, a low base, the pre-monsoon construction spree and healthy domestic demand pushed volume higher, despite the shutdown of a few mills, while a pick-up in rural demand supported the FMCG sector's volume growth, the statement said. Aluminium sector's revenue is seen up at 23 per cent, owing to higher domestic demand, particularly through transmission lines, higher domestic output after Bharat Aluminium Company's expansion, more export opportunities from lower trade volatility between major economies, and an improvement in realisations due to a higher share of downstream products, Crisil Intelligence said. Likewise, airline revenue is expected to rise 15 per cent on-year, driven by an increase of 10-12 per cent in volume owing to expanded supply on account of reduced aircraft groundings and addition of new aircraft, it added.
