UFC 319: Joe Rogan compares 'monster' Dricus Du Plessis' cardio to Merab Dvalishvili
Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) defends his middleweight title against Khamzat Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) in Saturday's UFC 319 main event (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) at United Center in Chicago.
Rogan compared Du Plessis' continuous growth to Dvalishvili's, pointing to "The Machine" dominating and submitting Sean O'Malley in their UFC 316 rematch as an example. He told show guest Matt Serra he, in particular, should relate since he's coached Dvalishvili for years.
"He's a monster, and you know this because you work with Merab," Rogan said of Du Plessis in a recent episode of "The Joe Rogan Experience." "There's guys that reach this level of discipline, and they achieve a level of cardio vascular performance that's just above everybody else's and then they maintain it. They get that advantage and they keep pushing it, and they slowly keep adding onto it.
"Like you're seeing Merab now, particularly in the second O'Malley fight, you see he's a totally different beast. He's super confident, non-stop, and you can't keep up with that. The amount of hard work is extraordinary to get to that level, and I think Dricus is kind of a similar thing. I think that dude works so hard that he can go out there and fight full blast."
Guests John Rallo, Serra and Din Thomas all spoke about how Chimaev's resume mainly consists of welterweights, but Rogan explained how that could serve as an advantage for "Borz."
"Khamzat's speed is a big factor with his hand speed," Rogan said. "People forget what he did to Kevin Holland, the way he could ragdoll guys on the ground. But what he did to Gerald Meerschaert is pretty f*cking spooky. He's technical and sharp and straight down the middle. He is good standing up, and that's where it's going to be weird. That's where I want to see because Du Plessis makes everyone look stupid. He finds a way to get you."

Carlos Prates made the first round end with a buzzer rather than a thud at UFC 319. In the final seconds of the opening frame, "The Nightmare" landed a spinning back elbow to the head of veteran Geoff Neal for the wildest finish of the night. UFC 319 results: Michael Page styles on Jared Cannonier in unanimous nod
Michael Page picked up the biggest win of his UFC career by outpointing former title challenger Jared Cannonier. On the main card of UFC 319 at United Center in Chicago, Page (24-3 MMA, 3-1 UFC) made it back-to-back wins under the UFC banner by winning a unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) over Cannonier (18-9 MMA, 11-9 UFC). Starting out with his hands at his hips as usual, Page showed off his quick in-and-out movements while pretending to dribble a basketball. Cannonier found an entry to clinch, but Page defended well to prevent a takedown. A moment later, Page blasted Cannonier with a hard overhand right, sending him to the canvas. More taunting from Page immediately followed. Page crushed Cannonier with a hard right hand early in Round 2 and audibly reacted to the damage he caused. A few moments later, Page blitzed with a combination, sending Cannonier to the ground again. Later in the round, Cannonier got a takedown, but couldn't keep Page on the canvas. Early in Round 3, Cannonier took advantage of an opportunity left by Page during an exchange, and took control on the mat with plenty of time to work. In full mount with over three minutes, Cannonier looked for ground and pound, but Page was quick to get back to half guard. Cannonier threatened a kimura, but it wasn't there. Cannonier finished out the round on top with punches. With the result, Page makes it back-to-back wins for the first time under the UFC banner. After winning his debut against Kevin Holland, "MVP" dropped a decision to Ian Machado Garry. He successfully rebounded with a nod over Shara Magomedov in February. UFC 319 results: Carlos Prates lands spinning knockout of Geoff Neal
Carlos Prates may have turned in a Knockout of the Year candidate Saturday in Chicago. On the UFC 319 main card, Prates (22-7 MMA, 5-1 UFC) audibly cracked Geoff Neal (16-7 MMA, 8-5 UFC) with a spinning back elbow for a knockout stoppage at 4:59 of Round 1. The welterweight bout took place at United Center. Prior to the finish, both men brought the heat but in a contained manner. They were measured, not wild. Both landed hard shots. But it was Prates' spinning maneuver that sealed the deal. After his win, Prates asked Dana White for three things: a slot on the UFC Fight Night event in Rio in October, a $50,000 bonus, and for his friend Marcos Degli to be signed. White immediately obliged two of the three, telling Prates he could fight in Rio and also awarding him a $50,000 bonus. Degli's signing remains to be seen. The win bounces Prates back from his first UFC loss, which came in a short-notice main event vs. Ian Machado Garry in April.
