Own an older car or bike? Don't worry about ethanol-blended E20 petrol, assures govt
Personalised Offers on Yamaha MT 15 Version 2.0 Check Offers The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG) has snubbed concerns around the use of E20 fuel in older vehicles.(Pixabay/Representative Image)
MoPNG has claimed that studies revealed no major performance or wear-and-tear in older vehicles have been reported with the E20 petrol use. However, the ministry said that a significant fuel economy decrease may occur, but that can be minimised with engine tuning.
E20 petrol: Concerns around fuel economy and material corrosion
With the refuelling stations dispensing E20 fuel across India, there have been concerns among motorists that the ethanol-blended fuel can cause significant harm to the older vehicles. Also, there have been concerns that E20 significantly impacts the fuel economy.
MoPNG stated that ethanol, being a lower-energy-density fuel than petrol, can cause a marginal decrease in fuel economy. However, that is not more than one or two per cent for four-wheelers designed for E10 and calibrated for E20. The ministry also stated that E20 doesn't lead to a drastic drop in fuel efficiency in older vehicles. It also claimed that this marginal drop in fuel efficiency can be minimised through improved engine tuning and the use of E20-compatible materials.
Material corrosion is another concern among motorists. Many believe that E20 results in material corrosion for the older engines. MoPNG claimed that safety standards for E20, including corrosion inhibitors and compatible fuel system materials, are well established through BIS specifications and automotive industry standards.
E20 is not significantly harmful for older vehicles
The MoPNG has said that international studies on the effect of using ethanol-blended petrol on the mechanical, energy and environmental performance of vehicles through testing of carburated and fuel-injected vehicles every 10,000 kilometres during their first 100,000 kilometres revealed no significant statistical differences in power and torque generated and fuel consumption. 'Material compatibility and drivability tests by Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) and Indian Oil Corporation (R&D) have confirmed that legacy vehicles also showed no significant variations, performance issues or abnormal wear-and-tear when operated with E20. Moreover, E20 fuel passed hot and cold startability tests without any engine damage,' the ministry said.

The lease became effective from July 15. According to lease documents accessed by real estate analytics platform CRE Matrix, Tesla has paid a security deposit of ₹2.41 crore for the property and agreed to a monthly rent of ₹40.17 lakh. The agreement comes with a three-year lock-in period, and rent will escalate annually by 4.75%. The chosen location, Sohna Road, is widely recognised as the automobile servicing hub of NCR, housing high-end service centres and showrooms of luxury automakers. The leased space spans a super built-up area of 50,914 sq ft, with a usable ground floor area of 33,475 sq ft, and will be delivered in warm shell condition, allowing Tesla to customize the interiors and fit-outs in line with its global retail model. The facility is fully approved for commercial operations, with all valid permits and occupancy certificates in place. According to the lease documentation, the premises are free of legal encumbrances and backed by ready infrastructure and utilities. 'This move signals a major boost to Gurugram's commercial and automobile landscape,' said Abhishek Kiran Gupta, CEO and co-founder of CRE Matrix and 'Tesla's Sohna Road location comes at a 6% rental premium over the market average, which highlights both the company's strategic intent and the location's appeal. Gurugram offers a skilled talent pool for high-end automotive services, making it an ideal destination.' Tesla's Multi-City Expansion in India Gains Momentum Tesla's NCR debut comes soon after its retail foray in Mumbai, where the EV maker opened a flagship outlet in the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). In May 2025, the company also leased 24,565 sq ft at Lodha Logistics Park in Kurla West, Mumbai, to be used as a service centre. The five-year lease in Mumbai comes with a starting monthly rent of ₹37.53 lakh, translating to a total lease value of over ₹24 crore. The EV major also maintains a 30-seater office in a co-working facility in Kurla and pays a record ₹881 per sq ft for its premium retail outlet in Maker Maxity, BKC—making it one of the most expensive commercial leases in India's auto retail space. Elsewhere in India, Tesla has been actively expanding its physical footprint. The company leased 5,850 sq ft of office space in Pune in 2024 and has also secured showroom space in Delhi, reinforcing its commitment to a broad-based rollout across key Indian metros.

Majority of petrol vehicle owners oppose E20 fuel mandate over mileage concerns: Survey
A majority of Indian petrol vehicle owners are voicing strong opposition to the government's move to mandate E20 petrol — a blend of 20 per cent ethanol and 80 per cent petrol — citing reduced mileage and increased running costs, according to a new survey conducted by LocalCircles, Business Standard reports. The nationwide survey, which received over 36,000 responses from petrol vehicle owners across 315 districts, revealed that nearly two in three respondents who own vehicles purchased in 2022 or earlier reported a drop in fuel efficiency in 2025. Specifically, 22 per cent of them experienced a mileage drop of 15–20 per cent, another 22 per cent reported declines above 20 per cent, and 11 per cent noted a 10–15 per cent dip. Only 11 per cent of owners said their vehicles were unaffected. Mounting Resistance Against E20 Rollout When asked about the government's decision to sell only E20 petrol, 44 per cent of respondents opposed the move outright and called for the policy to be revoked. Another 22 per cent expressed conditional opposition, stating that they would support the mandate only if customers were given a choice of fuel blends (E5, E10, E20) along with price incentives. Just 12 per cent supported the current policy, while the remaining 22 per cent gave no definitive response. Ethanol, a biofuel derived from crops like sugarcane and maize, is seen as a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels, with the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower India's crude oil import bill. However, older vehicles not designed for high ethanol blends face issues such as lower fuel efficiency and increased wear and tear. Accelerated Ethanol Targets The government revised its National Policy on Biofuels in 2022 to pre-pone the E20 target from 2030 to 2025–26. The target was achieved earlier this year. According to the petroleum ministry, ethanol blending reached 17.98 per cent by February 2025, and plans are now underway to raise the ratio to 27 per cent. To support this, the Bureau of Indian Standards has been directed to set norms for E27, and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) is working on required engine modifications. The government is also exploring biofuel use in diesel, including blending isobutanol at 10 per cent. Industry Seeks Phased Transition Automakers and industry experts have urged the government to adopt a phased rollout of higher ethanol blends. According to the LocalCircles report, many legacy petrol vehicles designed for E10 are not under warranty for E20 use and could face long-term damage. While official studies and tests cited by the government show minimal impact on vehicle performance and engine health with E20 usage, the public remains concerned. The survey findings, which will be shared with government stakeholders, call for a more gradual transition to higher ethanol blends and greater consumer choice to avoid economic hardship for vehicle owners.
