Lions spotlight: 5 players to watch closely in preseason game vs Falcons

Russ Brown looks at five Lions to watch closely in Friday night's game in Atlanta
The Detroit Lions play the Atlanta Falcons tonight for their second preseason game of the summer. Despite a lackluster performance against the Los Angeles Chargers in the Hall of Fame, there should be an expectation for improvement tonight. There are plenty of questions that need to be answered before the Lions kickoff the 2025 regular season but for now let's focus on 5 players for the game tonight!
WR Isaac TeSlaa
Regardless of the outcome in the Hall of Fame against the Chargers last week, it was a strong debut from Isaac TeSlaa. In that game, TeSlaa moved with ease on his routes and showed off plenty of speed as a gunner on special teams. He finished with 2 receptions for 46 yards and was one of the most productive players on the night for the Lions.
Coming out of that game, it's been one of the most important weeks of practice this summer for TeSlaa. Mainly due to the fact that he saw time this past week in practice with the first team offense. As WR Tim Patrick struggles continue, TeSlaa has earned a bigger role in the offense and he's running full steam with it. There should be plenty of focus on his performance tonight.
TE / FB Zach Horton
It's unclear if the Lions will keep 3 or 4 tight ends on the roster. But Zach Horton may be a step ahead of players such as Shane Zylstra and Kenny Yeboah right now. Mainly due to the fact that Horton was utilized quite a bit last week as an H-back and fullback.
The way it appears right now is that Horton has an edge over the competition. But continuously having strong performances throughout the preseason will be pivotal on Horton's roster spot. Look for him to be heavily used in the Lions second preseason game against the Falcons tonight.
DE Ahmed Hassanien
The debut for Hassanien was strong. Rarely looking out of place, it's clear that he belongs in Detroit and can contribute right away on this defensive line. Despite having reps against the Chargers where he got washed, it was mostly a positive start to his Lions career.
Playing with good physicality and showing strong pursuit to the football, Hassanien looks the part up to this point. With Josh Paschal not scheduled to be activated until at least September, there's plenty of time and opportunity for Hassanien to define his role on the Lions defense.
WR Tim Patrick
Rather than Tim Patrick, this would have been fellow WR Dominic Lovett. However, it doesn't appear that Lovett (abdomen) will be playing this week. That said, if Patrick does play, it would be promising to see positive production from him. It's worth noting that Patrick left practice early on Wednesday but there's no further news on his status at this time.
One season removed from rejuvenating his career in Detroit with 33 receptions for 394 yards and three touchdowns, it's been a slow start for Patrick. Looking like he's somewhat lost in the shuffle, it would be encouraging to see Patrick play two or three drives for the Lions offense tonight. As mentioned above, all eyes should be on TeSlaa and Patrick for the Lions 3rd receiver spot on offense.
OT Giovanni Manu
Last week I was supposed to do a film study on Giovanni Manu. Unfortunately, it was a very vanilla performance from the second year offensive tackle out of British Columbia. There were instances of him handling a blitz or T-E stunt just fine but other reps where his hands hit too wide or too high.
Fortunately, Manu should get plenty of reps in the game against the Falcons. With Dan Skipper dealing with an ankle injury, we should see Manu start the game and potentially play most of the first half. Despite looking more controlled and quicker than a season ago, there's still some inconsistencies within his game. Building off last week will be important as the Lions begin to shape their 53-man roster for this season.

Breece Hall fantasy football preview 2025: Stats, season outlook, predictions

Rotoworld Staff, Breece Hall 2025 Fantasy Preview 2024: A top-five running back in summer fantasy drafts, Hall ended up finishing as the RB17 by average PPR points. The culprits were many. Hall's efficiency cratered from his 2023 marks while his receptions fell from 76 to 57. He scored just eight total touchdowns. Although it's tempting to blame it all on Aaron Rodgers and the Jets' overall dysfunction, Hall never presented as a potential solution. That kept the door open for rookies Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis to command touches. They did so, but experienced even less success than their third-year teammate. What's changed: Rodgers is gone along with his sycophantic assistant coaches. They have been replaced by former Lions man Aaron Glenn on the sideline and dual-threat QB Justin Fields under center. That duo all but guarantees a run-heavy approach, though Glenn has hinted he could go beyond the Lions' patented two-man backfield in favor of a three-back approach. That would be disastrous for Hall but is impractical in theory. Outlook: Unless Allen or Davis massively level up on their disappointing rookie years, Hall remains by far the best runner on this roster, as well as one of its most important pass catchers. Overheated in recent years, Hall's ADP is more reasonable for 2025. He's a sturdy RB2 with the upside for much more. Najee Harris returns to running, doing drills with a football after eye injury

Chargers running back Najee Harris isn't back to practice, but he took another step in his return from an eye injury. On Tuesday, Harris ran and participated in drills with a football off to the side with an athletic trainer, Kris Rhim of ESPN reports. Harris, who was injured in a July 4 fireworks accident, landed on the non-football injury list before training camp. Since Aug. 2 — and before Tuesday — he had only walked laps with a helmet while wearing a weighted vest. Harris' agent, Doug Hendrickson, said Harris has a 'superficial eye injury' and expects the one-time Pro Bowler to be ready for the season. Coach Jim Harbaugh has been noncommittal about Harris' availability for Week 1. Harris posted a photo on social media last week that showed his left eye completely shut, but Harbaugh said Harris can open his eye. The Chargers drafted Omarion Hampton and will have another running back splitting time with the rookie, whether that's Harris or another back. Kimani Vidal, Raheim Sanders, Hassan Haskins and Nyheim Miller-Hines are the backs competing for the job. 'Don't have to make that decision right now,' Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman said. 'Just keep working, keep evaluating, keep trying to get better, see how it all fits together when the decision needs to be made.'

Is Keenan Allen worth a late-round fantasy stash?

ahoo Fantasy's Matt Harmon and contributor Ray Garvin explain why the Chargers' 33-year-old receiver could still be a regular flex option in a better offense. Hear the full conversation on the 'Yahoo Fantasy Forecast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript Keenan Allen just recently signed back to the Los Angeles Chargers. And you know, the one thing, Matt, that we have not really done this entire show is try to bake in injuries and talk about players being hurt. Like there's a long time before the season starts. Lads dealing with a little something something, but I don't think it's really going to impact them once we get to the season. Keenan Howe was brought in for a reason and when you look at some of his metrics from last season, offense not very good, but Keenan Allen still commanded a decent chunk of that Chicago Bears passing attack. He's competent at what he does and he's going to be what I call just one of those gnats around Ladd McConkey. And I think it's one of the reasons why I think I moved Ladd down, not because he's getting a chunk taken away, but he's just that, it's just always around. You, you're swatting and it won't go away no matter what you do. Keenan Allen was brought in to do some of that, and you know what, he's probably a lot more trusted than Quentin Johnson right now or any of the tight ends. They're down or running backs, so he's gonna factor into this offense. He's got to be talked about here as one of those later round gems. I mean, I think he could just, even if he's just like a PPR scam, right, where he's getting a lot of those like layup targets, he's, he's gonna be useful here. He was actually 18th among wide receivers in team target share last year, which I don't think many people realized, but he was definitely used a lot. Um, here's the thing that I think I'm excited about for Keenan Allen this year is that last year with the Bears took 52.5% of his snaps from the slot. His yards per target were, you know, kind of right around 9, but like that's per target. When you actually watch him play, he was running a lot of like deep routes up the seam. I'm not gonna be doing that with the Chargers because Ladd McConkey is their intermediate guy. They have vertical players and, um, you know, Quentin Johnson doesn't really catch the ball down the field and contest situations, but he runs deep routes. They got Trey Harris maybe to be a sacrificial ex. They've got Keanre Lambert Smith, who has made some plays this offseason. He's got good training camp reviews, Hall of Fame game. We know the deal. He can rip it downfield. So, they got downfield guys. But Keenan Allen, I think, will be sort of again, maybe a compiler. He could be a guy that catches what, like maybe 60-plus balls here, as in the late range of the draft. Close
