Elk Grove zoo project will not move forward, Sacramento Zoo says

(FOX40.COM)— The Sacramento Zoological Society announced Wednesday that it will not be moving forward with the new zoo project in Elk Grove.

'We believe in the future of this zoo, and in planning for the zoo's future in a way that meets the needs of the animals in our care and of our community. We are deeply committed to fulfilling our mission, and inspiring future generations to love and care for the natural world,' Sacramento Zoo officials said. 'With these considerations in mind, we believe that this decision is the best path forward for the zoo, while staying true to our mission.'
Officials said their vision of a 65-acre state-of-the-art zoo had faded over time. This is a result of controlled construction costs and staying within budget, which would reduce the size of the zoo.
According to the zoo, the new location would also not be able to house as many animals as the Land Park location and would not be 'financially or operationally sustainable.'
Wednesday's statement said officials are not taking the decision lightly and confirmed that the project was not the best way to invest their resources or donors' funds.
The zoo acknowledged the community may be disappointed, but officials said the decision is the most responsible choice for the success of the zoo.
Street closures for Stockton Cinco de Mayo Parade announced
'In the coming weeks and months, we will have an opportunity to chart a new vision for the zoo's future. This news is still very fresh, and we thank you for your patience as we determine next steps. We will be sharing more information very soon,' the statement said.
Officials reassure the community that they will continue to be a welcoming location to the community with a beautiful future for years to come.
The full statement can be found on the Sacramento Zoo website.

Here's how to vote on Folsom City Zoo's new bear's name

( — The Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary has welcomed a female Eurasian Brown Bear who is in need of a name. Video Above: The Sacramento Zoo welcomes a new Giraffe with the goal of repopulating the endangered species Her arrival comes after the sanctuary welcomed a black bear named Herbie in March. The sanctuary learned that Herbie had lived with another bear and attempted to keep them together. However, the facility Herbie came from prevented the two bears from staying together. Now, Herbie has a new companion and the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary is giving the community the opportunity to name the new Eurasian Brown Bear. The naming contest will also help raise funds that will benefit Herbie and his companion, as well as cover the new bear's intake expenses, officials said. Advocates organizing to support immigrant families All voters have to do is make a minimum donation of $5 to the zoo's annual campaign fund, and then pick their favorite name of the three options. Officials said that every dollar given counts as one vote. The options are Matilda, Petunia and Magnolia. Visit to cast your vote. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. SF fountain that divides public opinion to be fenced off

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A controversial fountain along San Francisco's waterfront has been ordered closed off from the public. The Vaillancourt Fountain across from the Ferry Building at Embarcadero Plaza is being fenced off in the interest of public safety, according to city officials. A representative with the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department told that a recent report had made it clear that the fountain, in its current state, is a potential hazard. 'The Vaillancourt Fountain was designed for people to interact with,' an official said. 'This report made it clear that is no longer safe.' Two Bay Area restaurants named among 'world's best' by prestigious global ranking According to a Rec and Parks official, parts of the fountain are 'cracked, corroded, or missing,' including a key support rod in one of the structure's arms. The fountain also contains hazardous materials like lead and asbestos. 'As a result, we are fencing it off,' a parks official said. People will still be able to view the fountain, but not to walk through it or get close to it. Installed in 1971, the Vaillancourt Fountain divides public opinion. Fans of brutalist architecture and preservationists have defended the 710-ton sculpture, which has been inactive as a fountain for the past year due to a pump failure. Recently, plans were unveiled for a $30-million renovation of the Embarcadero Plaza and adjoining Sue Bierman Park. The fountain was not pictured in renderings for the planned renovations. Armand Vaillancourt, the Canadian artist behind the fountain, visited SF last month to try and urge city officials to preserve the structure. Parks officials maintain that the report will have no impact on long-term plans for the future of Vaillancourt Fountain. 'This step is strictly about ensuring public safety,' officials told KRON4. 'It doesn't impact the timeline or scope of the broader Embarcadero Plaza and Sue Bierman Park Renovation Project.' Parks officials maintain that long-term decisions regarding the fountain's future will follow public process established by the San Francisco Arts Commission, including review from the Visual Arts Committee, and will include opportunities for community impact.
