Turkey arrests 65 soldiers, police for ties to late Erdogan foe

ISTANBUL : Turkey arrested 65 soldiers and police officers early on Friday over alleged ties to the late preacher Fethullah Gulen, who was accused of masterminding the failed 2016 coup.
State news agency Anadolu said 56 active-duty soldiers from the Turkish armed forces had been arrested, with another seven still being sought.
Halk TV, meanwhile, said nine police officers were arrested, 'most of them in Istanbul'.
'In an operation against the terrorist organisation FETO in 36 provinces centred in Istanbul, 56 of the 63 active-duty soldiers for whom detention orders were issued were captured,' Anadolu said.
The FETO – or the 'Fethullah Terror Organisation' – is the name Turkey gives to Gulen's Hizmet movement, which once had widespread influence behind the scenes.
Gulen, who died in October, was once a close ally of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan before the two became bitter enemies. He fled to the United States in 1999 and never returned.
Even after his death, Turkey has vowed to pursue his followers across the globe.
Quoting a prosecutors' statement, Halk said the arrest operation began in Istanbul at 6am (0300 GMT) and concerned members of the air force, the gendarmerie, and the land and naval forces.

LYON, June 7 — A French mayor accused of using a sex tape to blackmail a political rival is set to go on trial in September after a court yesterday ordered him to face criminal proceedings. Gael Perdriau, who leads the city of Saint-Etienne in central France, is accused of orchestrating the plot in 2015, using footage of his deputy with a male escort. The two magistrates investigating the case ordered that Perdriau, 52, be tried for blackmail, theft, embezzlement of public funds by a public official and participation in a criminal association, Lyon's chief prosecutor Thierry Dran said in a statement. The case, triggered by a whistleblower in 2022, involves a 2015 video of former deputy mayor Gilles Artigues receiving a massage from a male escort in a Paris hotel. Perdriau allegedly demanded political loyalty and electoral concessions from Artigues in return for keeping the compromising video private, according to court documents seen by AFP. Despite being ousted from the conservative Republicans party and under pressure to resign, Perdriau has maintained his innocence and continues to hold office—even hinting at a 2026 re-election bid. The trial is set to take place between September 22 and 26, pending any appeals, the prosecutor added. KUALA LUMPUR: Hari Raya Aidiladha greetings from all corners of the world were received by Malaysia as Muslims prepare to mark the event today. Through the Istana Negara Facebook page, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, extended their Aidiladha greetings to all Muslims in the country. 'Their Majesties also hope that the sacrificial ritual (korban) will be carried out well, and will be one that is blessed and acceptable to Allah SWT. 'May this spirit of sacrifice continue to unite the people harmoniously, bringing forth love and universal values of humanity,' said the royal couple yesterday. Their Majesties also said they are praying for the safety of all haj pilgrims so that they may always be well and blessed with a most enriching experience. In a series of Facebook posts this week, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed that greetings were also received from Iran, Turkiye and Pakistan. In a phone call with Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday, Anwar said it is his prayer that haj pilgrims from both nations would be granted a blessed haj and contribute to the development of the ummah upon returning to their respective countries. He also expressed gratitude to Masoud for facilitating the repatriation of two Malaysian citizens previously detained in Iran, as well as the cordial treatment according to Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir during their recent visit to Teheran as part of joint efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation. In Mecca, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the haj is a powerful platform for unity and a symbol of universal solidarity that can restore the strength of the Muslim ummah if it is embraced with sincerity and deep understanding. He said as Muslims around the world face increasing division due to narrow-minded ideologies and a fading sense of brotherhood, the spirit of haj must be embraced to rekindle the values of love, mutual respect and fraternity among the faithful, he said in a Bernama report on Thursday. 'If we reflect with open hearts, we will see that haj is a commanding symbol of unity for Muslims worldwide. Look at the millions of people from different races, skin colours, cultures and languages gathering in one place, facing one qiblah, calling out one name: Allah SWT. 'There are no titles, no castes, no worldly pride. All that remains are two pieces of white cloth and hearts humbled before the Creator. Earlier, Mohd Na'im spent time visiting the accommodation tents and mingling with Muassasah pilgrims here. Malaysia received a haj quota of 31,600 pilgrims from Saudi Arabia for this haj season. In Kuala Lumpur, National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said the Aidiladha celebration should serve as a moment of heartfelt reflection on the meaning of sacrifice in the context of humanity and unity. He said the celebration is not just about the ritual of sacrifice, but also a symbol of sincerity and solidarity. 'These values are vital in building a peaceful and harmonious nation,' he said in a Facebook post yesterday. Yesterday, Anwar joined in the takbir raya at Surau Al-Ikhwan, Jalan Pinggiran Putra at Putrajaya, where Imam Mustafa Kamal Abdullah led the ceremony attended by more than 500 worshippers after Friday prayers. The Trump-Musk political marriage blew up yesterday as the president declared himself 'very disappointed' in criticisms from his former aide and top donor, before the pair hurled insults at each other on social media. At the commission's daily briefing, spokeswoman Paula Pinho was asked whether Musk had reached out to the EU with a view to relocating his businesses, or setting up new ones. 'He's very welcome,' she replied with a smile. The commission's spokesman for tech matters, Thomas Regnier, followed up by stressing – straight-faced – that 'everyone is very welcome indeed to start and to scale in the EU'. 'That is precisely the objective of Choose Europe,' he said, referencing an EU initiative in favour of start-ups and expanding businesses. Musk has been a frequent critic of the 27-nation EU – attacking its digital laws as censorship and berating its leaders, while cheering on the ascendant far-right in Germany and elsewhere.
