Gunmen abduct and kill 9 passengers from 2 buses on a southwestern Pakistan highway
The overnight attacks occurred in the Zhob and Loralai districts of Balochistan province as the buses traveled from the provincial capital, Quetta, to Punjab province, district administrator Saadat Husain said Friday.
The attackers fled the scene and a search is underway to track down the assailants. Authorities recovered the bodies along the highway, Husain said.
Ashfaq Chaudhry, an administrator in Punjab's Dera Ghazi Khan district, said the attackers appeared to target passengers from Punjab specifically.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the abduction and killings of the bus passengers.
Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari issued a statement condemning the 'brutal killing of passengers' in Balochistan. He blamed the outlawed Baloch Liberation Army for the deaths and said the group wanted to 'spread chaos and instability in Pakistan.'
The BLA killed 23 passengers in Balochistan in a similar attack last year. However, the militant group issued a statement saying on Thursday night it was engaged in an attack on a military camp in Balochistan's Surab district, far away from the areas of the bus attacks.
Baluchistan has been the scene of a long-running insurgency in southwestern Pakistan with an array of separatist groups, including the BLA, demanding independence from Pakistan's central government in Islamabad. The groups have staged attacks mainly targeting security forces and people from Punjab who travel to Balochistan for business or employment.
Although Pakistani authorities say they have quelled the insurgency, violence in the province has persisted.
The Pakistani government has routinely blamed India for backing the Pakistani Taliban and Baloch insurgents in Pakistan.

LA County deputies searching for missing children last seen with their father
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department asked for help finding two siblings who were allegedly abducted by their father last week. The two kids, Juaquin, 11, and Aastha Vides, 8, were last seen with their father, Juaquin Vides Sr., on Aug. 8 at 6 p.m. in the 1000 block of W. 88th Street in South Los Angeles. Vides Sr. and his kids were last seen in a 2012 green Mazda 2 with stickers on the rear driver's side and the license plate number 9DRV087. Deputies believe suspect Sylvia Gonzalez, 53, was driving the family to the Bay Area, specifically San Jose. Investigators said Vides Sr. is 35 years old, stands about 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighs around 220 pounds, and has brown hair and brown eyes. He is deaf and mute. Gonzalez is 5 feet 1 inch tall, weighs 233 pounds, with gray hair and hazel eyes. Juaquin Vides is 3 feet 8 inches tall, weighs 49 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a blue T-shirt with a yellow stripe. Aastha Vides is 3 feet and 6 inches tall with black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a green T-shirt with white flowers. Detectives still looking for leads in Indiana cold case murder of Darlene Hulse
Indiana State Police hope the public can still offer them clues or leads in the 41-year-old cold case murder of 28-year-old Darlene Hulse. Hulse was preparing to leave her home in rural Argos, Indiana, in Marshall County on around 9 a.m. on Aug. 17, 1984 when a man forced his way to her home. She was with her three daughters, aged 6, 8 and 11 months old. Her 6-year-old and 8-year-old daughters were able to escape and ran to a nearby relative's house, who called police. When officers from the Argos Police Department, Marshall County Sheriff's Office and Indiana State Police got to Hulse's home, they found her 11-month-old daughter but no sign of Hulse. Police said Hulse was attacked and abducted, driven away in the attacker's vehicle. They searched the area but were not able to find her. The next day, police were called for a body found in a wooded area by a timber surveyor on Olive Trail between State Road 110 and 20A Road, about six miles west of where Hulse lived. The body was identified as Darlene Hulse, and her autopsy ruled her death was a homicide by blunt force trauma. Her attacker has never been identified or caught. Witnesses described him as a white man in his mid- to late-20s, 6 ft. to 6 ft. 2 in. tall, with blonde hair combed to the side, a long nose and a long face. His car was described as a 1970s-style four-door vehicle that was greenish in color and had rust on it. It may have been a Pontiac or Oldsmobile. The Indiana State Police Cold Case Unit has continued to investigate this case and are confident someone knows something. Bloody five days in Cape Town as 16 people killed in various shootings
Sixteen people were killed in a bloody five days in Cape Town this week, but no one has been arrested for the murders. The killings occurred in nine separate shootings. Many are believed to be gang-related. In the most recent shooting incident, a man was shot dead inside a Silver VW Polo vehicle close to Tygerberg Hospital in Francie Van Zijl Drive, Parow, on Friday morning. Western Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said Parow police found the man's body inside the vehicle when they arrived at the scene. 'The victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel. The unknown suspects fled the scene in an undisclosed direction, and they are yet to be arrested. 'The motive for this attack is believed to be gang-related,' Swartbooi added. On Thursday, two people were shot dead in Viscount Avenue, Rocklands in Mitchells Plain, just after 21:00. According to Swartbooi, when police arrived at the scene they found the bullet-riddled bodies of two men, aged 37 and 40. 'According to reports, a black and grey vehicle stopped next to the victims and the occupant started shooting at the victims before fleeing the scene. Both victims were declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The motive for the attack is gang-related,' Swartbooi said. Also on Thursday, a 37-year-old man was shot dead in Buffalo Street, Eastridge, in Mitchells Plain. 'Upon arrival on the scene police found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds to his head. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The motive for the attack is believed to be gang-related. The suspect/s fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,' police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said. In Grassy Park on the same day, police responded to a shooting complaint in Fifth Avenue, Lotus River. There, they found the lifeless body of a 20-year-old man. 'Four other males between 20 and 72, who sustained gunshot wounds, were taken to a medical facility for medical treatment. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and arrests are yet to be made,' Twigg said. At the scene, according to Twigg, Kleinvlei police found that the victim had sustained gunshot wounds to his face. 'The suspect/s fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,' said Twigg, He added that the motive for the attack formed part of the police investigation. Also on Wednesday, four men aged 20 to 37, were gunned down in Overcome Heights, Muizenberg. 'While gangsterism has not been ruled out as a possible motive, investigators are pursuing all lines of enquiry in an effort to bring those responsible to justice,' Colonel Andrè Traut said. News24 previously reported that on Tuesday, three suspected hijackers were killed in a shootout with the police in Kosovo, Philippi hours after Nyanga police found the body of a woman in a hijacked car that operated as a taxi. According to police insiders, five armed men hijacked the vehicle while the woman was a passenger. A tip-off later led police to the Kosovo informal settlement, where three people opened fire on them from inside a shack. Police returned fire, killing them. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is probing the matter. IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping confirmed the incident and added that 'it has registered the case in question, and our investigation is in its infancy stage'. Also on Tuesday, Strandfontein police responded to a complaint of a shooting in Watussi Street in Bayview where a 38-year-old man was shot dead and a 40-year-old man was wounded. The injured man was taken to a medical facility for treatment. 'According to reports, the victims were sitting in the play park when a grey vehicle stopped and the occupants got out of the vehicle [and] opened fire on the victims, before fleeing the scene,' said Twigg. On Monday, the body of a 29-year-old man who had gunshot wounds to his body, was found in Benfica Street in Tafelsig. 'The suspect/s fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.
