Legge hopeful for more opportunities in NASCAR
Katherine Legge wants to do 'all the things' when it pertains to finding more opportunities in racing and that includes NASCAR.
Legge will make her ARCA Menards Series debut on February 15 at Daytona International Speedway with Sigma Performance Services (SPS). It will be her first time competing on the oval at Daytona. However, it will not be her first time in a stock car, as she has made five starts in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.
But as Legge has prepared for her Daytona debuts, she has made the media rounds. During a stop on the 'Good Game' podcast with Sarah Spain, it was mentioned that Legge would attempt the Memorial Day weekend double between the NTT IndyCar Series and NASCAR. However, as Legge told RACER's Marshall Pruett, there are no solid plans for that to happen, and she's focused on earning her way through the NASCAR process to be able to compete on all types of racetracks.
'I think we've probably got to take it one step at a time and see how we're going to get there,' Legge said. 'I want to do all of the things. I want to do the Daytona 500. I want to do the Coca-Cola 600. I want to do more NASCAR. I want to do more IndyCar. I want to do more sports cars.
'I'm non-discriminatory. I think it would be very cool. I'm no Kyle Larson; I wish I was. I watched him at the Chili Bowl and in that moment, I felt very insignificant and just in awe of the amount of talent that he has. But, you know, wouldn't that be cool? I think that would be cool. So, never say never. Let's put it like that.'
Legge made four starts in the Xfinity Series in 2018. In the years since, she's made one more start, which was in 2023. Four of those five starts came on road courses, with the other being the Richmond Raceway short track.
A motorsports veteran, Legge has competed successfully in various racing disciplines. In 2005, she triumphed in Long Beach in Toyota Atlantic, becoming the first woman to win a major open-wheel race in North America. In 2023, she became the fastest woman qualifier in the Indianapolis 500's history.
But competing in stock car racing is becoming her new favorite, and Legge sees the benefits of being a versatile driver now with stock car experience.

'Yes, I am,' Legge said about being game to drive anything. 'And again, it's making me a better driver and it's actually been one of the coolest experiences that I think I've ever done.'
Andy Lally offered an assist to get Legge ready. She had mentioned to Lally during a celebration in Asheville, N.C., for Spencer Pumpelly's 50th birthday that she was heading to Charlotte for a seat fitting. Lally, who has competed in NASCAR, offered to go with her.
'So, he went with me and told me where I needed to sit and all the good stuff,' Legge said. The team was awesome. I turned up for the seat fit; they were organized and on it, everything went so smoothly. I was like, 'This is weird. This never happens. What is going on? It's like I'm living in an alternate universe.' Everything went so smoothly and I loved everybody. They were fantastic. I was like, this is cool.'
The two-day test at Daytona last month went well, too. Legge and the team were among the top 15 fastest of the 70 teams participating in the test. Again noting how organized everything was with the team and how good the car was, Legge called the day 'one of the best days' she's had.
'I thought it was the coolest thing,' Legge said. 'I love driving stock cars. I drove Xfinity a handful of times a few years ago, and I wanted to get back to doing more. In NASCAR, you need to earn a license. So, I'm qualified in NASCAR's eye to drive on road and street courses and then probably the short ovals in lower-power cars. But you can't just show up and say, you know what, I want to do the Daytona 500. Because NASCAR will go, you're funny. Unless you're Helio Castroneves, in which case they're like, yeah, sure, we'll make up a new rule for you.'
Legge has seen other open-wheel drivers have to prove themselves in NASCAR, getting more opportunities to move upward. Danica Patrick and AJ Allmendinger were the two she specifically mentioned. The ARCA race at Daytona is one of those chances for Legge, and she admittedly is as nervous as excited to compete.
'I hope I'm good,' Legge said. 'And I hope I'm good enough that NASCAR will go, OK, now you're qualified to do the next and the next thing, and I can build on that if the opportunity arises.
'But whatever happens, again, it's going to make me a better driver. It's increasing my resume, and who doesn't want to do these cool things? I just count my lucky chickens. But I'm excited.'

Ram to enter trucks in 2026 with possible future move to Cup for Dodge
BROOKLYN, Mich. — Dodge parent company Stellantis will enter NASCAR racing in 2026 with its Ram brand competing in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series with an eye toward going Cup racing in the years beyond. Whether that's 2027 or later — 2027 is possible but would be an aggressive timeline — remains to be seen as the announcement Sunday focused primarily on the truck, a much easier lift than going Cup racing. With all trucks in the series using an Ilmor engine and several common body elements, Ram just needed to design a nose, a hood, front fenders and a tail for its racing vehicle. Ram did not announce who will drive its trucks nor the teams that will field its trucks. Ram CEO Tim Kinuskis said he hopes to have somewhere between four and six trucks for the 2026 season opener at Daytona. "We're looking for a date to the prom right now [for trucks]," Kinuskis said. "So how am I going to get the Cup? That's going to depend on how I get to truck. So however we get to truck is going will obviously weigh heavily on do I have a path to Cup? "Our intention is not to do a one-hit wonder and go to truck and not to Cup. That's not our plan." Ram does not have cars so what brand of car — Dodge? Plymouth's possible rebirth? — is still to be determined although Dodge has a lengthy history in the sport and motorsports as a whole. "Ram is coming back to the truck series," Kinuskis said. "It has nothing to do with Dodge, despite the fact that everyone in the world calls it Dodge Ram. ... If we go back to Cup, which is our intention, Ram doesn't have a car, so obviously that would have to be Dodge coming back. "But I'm not making that announcement. I'm not saying Dodge is back. Don't put that headline. But when we get to that point, it wouldn't be Ram, obviously." There is speculation in the industry that GMS, which has competed in all three national series over the last decade and was eventually bought out by Jimmie Johnson in the rebranding to Legacy Motor Club, will be involved in building chassis and/or fielding trucks for Ram. Kinuskis promised a program that will elevate fan engagement, and YouTube star Cleetus McFarland, who has competed in some ARCA races, has been linked to the Ram program. Dodge had Cup teams from 2001-12 before exiting the sport on a high note with Brad Keselowski winning a Cup title at Team Penske. When Penske left for Ford, Dodge had trouble landing a premier team and opted to leave the sport. No new manufacturer has entered the sport since Toyota did so in 2004 in trucks and 2007 in Cup. Kinuskis also said when he returned to Ram earlier this year, his two goals were to reintroduce the Hemi engine and get into NASCAR, where 50 percent of its fan base own trucks. "It's always bothered me," Kinuskis said. "We've always been looking for a way to get back. It took us a long time to find the absolute right time." To re-enter Cup would take some engine development and significant body design, a process that would take at least 18 months, NASCAR Chief Racing Development Officer John Probst said. "The last time that engine ran was 2012 — the core components of the block, the head, the manifold, are all still relevant," Probst said. "Our existing engine builders develop their engines every year. There's been a gap there, so there'd be some development of that engine needed. "But from the basic building blocks they could start from that and do some catch-up development." Kinuskis wouldn't talk about a timeline Sunday for going to Cup racing. "Our full intention is to be back in Cup," Kinuskis said. "But right now we're on a path for Daytona next year with truck, with our eye on when we can be in Cup after that. TBD. "We're a fly with no net right now trying to get to Daytona. That's our focus right now." Keselowski, currently a driver and co-owner at RFK Racing, said the trucks are the right entry point for a manufacturer as it doesn't have to immediately get an engine available and because of the parity in the series. "[The truck series] is a great place for an OEM [original equipment manufacturer] to enter NASCAR and really kind of get that appetite going for the Cup Series," Keselowski said. "It's a big jump from the truck series to the Cup Series, but nonetheless it's a great entry point for OEMs, and hopefully they aren't the only one that will enter the truck series." Ram Is Returning to NASCAR. Could Dodge Be Next?
Ram wants to go racing once again. CEO Tim Kuniskis has plans to rejoin NASCAR as soon as February. The automaker has revealed a Ram 1500 concept race truck that previews what we could see competing at Daytona early next year in the Craftsman Truck Series, if everything goes according to plan. The concept, which is part of Ram's plan to have 25 product announcements in 18 months, borrows styling cues from the Warlock, Rebel, and RHO, the 1500's sportier trims. Ram designers were able to recreate the 1500's familiar face on the concept despite the need for aerodynamic efficiency. The concept wears a two-tone black-and-red livery with Mopar Direct Connection and " Symbol of Protest " branding. Photo by: Ram Photo by: Ram Kuniskis said that customers and its dealer network had been asking Ram to get back into NASCAR. 'The desire was always there' to rejoin the series, he added, but the company lacked a plan 'that delivered the last tenth and following just didn't fit our DNA.' Ram is advertising its return to NASCAR and the return of the Hemi with a new "Ram-Demption" campaign that features the 2026 Hemi truck, explosions, and a monster truck. Now, the company has a plan that begins with the concept's reveal at the Michigan International Speedway this weekend, which could be the start of something bigger. Kuniskis said he wants to rejoin the Cup Series, and we all know Ram doesn't have any cars in its portfolio. Photo by: Ram Other Stellantis brands do, and we highly doubt the conglomerate is readying Fiat or Alfa Romeo for America's Motorsport. That leaves the new Dodge Charger , which is in a similar situation to the Ram 1500—it's a brand-new model with a modern architecture that still lacks a Hemi V-8 engine, which Ram recently rectified by bringing the 5.7-liter V-8 back to the truck . However, Kuniskis did not provide any details about how Stellantis will rejoin the Cup Series. He first has to figure out how exactly he'll get his new race truck on the track at Daytona because he still doesn't have a team. 'I got a truck,' he said. 'I got the attention. I'm writing a deal with NASCAR. I'm going to Daytona. How I'm going actually do that? What's my team going to be? How I'm going to do it? I don't know. We're looking for a date to the prom right now.'
