Nvidia shares rose to an all-time high on Wednesday, with the leader in artificial intelligence (AI) chips extending an advance that has cemented its position as one of the most valuable companies in the world.

The stock rose 4.3 per cent to US$154.31, taking out an all-time high that has stood since January. The record is only the latest milestone for the company, which has risen 63 per cent off an April low, a rally that has added nearly US$1.5 trillion to its market capitalisation.
With the day's gain, Nvidia stands as the world's largest stock, with a market cap of about US$3.77 trillion, overtaking Microsoft at US$3.66 trillion.
Recent earnings from Nvidia were a notable catalyst for bulls, as the report showed robust growth and pointed to more strength ahead despite the impact of restrictions on the sales of advanced semiconductors in China.

Prints from Microsoft, Meta Platforms, Alphabet and Amazon.com – which together make up more than 40 per cent of Nvidia's revenue, per supply chain data compiled by Bloomberg – further underlined how the company's biggest customers continue to spend aggressively building out their AI infrastructure.

'My confidence in Nvidia's growth is higher than it was a couple of months ago, and it seems the AI arms race will continue through 2025 and probably 2026,' said Michael Smith, co-portfolio manager at Allspring Global Investments.

How unique US advantages are fuelling Trump's reckless behaviour

If there is one theme that has dominated financial markets since US President Donald Trump began his second term, it is the future of ' American exceptionalism '. This is the notion that US assets deserve to be valued more highly because of the US dollar's role as the world's pre-eminent reserve currency, America's huge natural and human resources, deep and transparent capital markets and the dominance of US technology companies in global stock market indices. Advertisement Some investment strategists believe Trump's ruinous trade tariffs, blatant disregard for the rule of law and irresponsible fiscal policies have chipped away at the perceived safe-haven status of US assets . The results of Bank of America's latest global fund manager survey on June 17 showed investors had the most underweight position in the US dollar in 20 years, while more than half of the respondents expected global stocks – as opposed to US equities specifically – to be the best-performing assets in the next five years. Yet while there are signs US exceptionalism is fading, the first five months of Trump's second term have, if anything, thrown America's unique advantages into sharp relief. US exceptionalism, particularly the natural resource and financial underpinnings, is amplifying the impact of Trump's reckless foreign and economic policies A few years ago, the consensus among energy analysts was that an Israeli or US attack on Iran's nuclear facilities would cause oil prices to exceed the record high of US$147 a barrel in July 2008 and potentially go as high as US$200 or US$250 a barrel. Such a scenario was viewed as the mother of all oil supply shocks, given the Middle East's central role in global crude production Advertisement Several factors are at work, notably a fragile ceasefire between the two foes. The most important one, however, is the US shale boom that has transformed America – which was a net importer of oil as recently as 2019 – into the world's biggest oil producer, accounting for more than a fifth of global output.

ASML launches science project in China to discover new talent in lithography

European chip equipment giant ASML has launched a project designed to discover and foster key engineering talent in China, in the latest show of its commitment to the market despite intensified US restrictions on advanced chipmaking technologies. Advertisement The Dutch lithography system maker has launched a science competition aimed at deepening public understanding of lithography – the critical process of etching circuit patterns onto silicon wafers – and fostering new tech talent in the country, according to a post on its official WeChat account. The online competition, open from late June through early July, and featuring 20 questions, targets Chinese semiconductor professionals and science enthusiasts. The top 16 contestants would have the opportunity to interview for a job at the company, while another 75 top scorers would be included in the firm's potential talent pool, according to its statement. The competition is committed to creating a 'window for contestants to deeply explore lithography technology', while cultivating talent to 'jointly promote the evolution of Moore's Law', according to the statement. Xiaomi's first AI-powered eyewear brings smartphone firm into ‘war of hundreds of glasses'

Xiaomi is set to debut its first artificial intelligence (AI)-powered smart glasses on Thursday, marking the Chinese smartphone and electric vehicle (EV) maker's entry into a rapidly expanding but crowded domestic market. The Beijing-based company is positioning its new eyewear as a 'next-generation personal smart gadget', according to an image posted on its official Weibo account on Wednesday. Co-founder and CEO Lei Jun said the glasses can capture first-person video and respond to voice queries – features that have become common in modern smart glasses such as those from Meta Platforms and Ray-Ban. Xiaomi is set to officially launch the frames on Thursday evening at an event titled 'Human x Car x Home', during which it will unveil the price of the glasses in addition to other products, including its latest foldable smartphone and its first SUV. In one of two videos Xiaomi released teasing the smart glasses, the camera-equipped frames could 'see and recognise' objects around the user and answer questions using generative AI. Examples in the video showed the wearer asking the glasses to identify a plant, estimate the calories of a meal and explain what capybaras eat. Despite the lack of pricing or specifications ahead of Xiaomi's event, the AI glasses have been highly anticipated by consumers. Local media reports last year revealed that the company planned to launch the frames this year. WellsennXR, a consultancy specialising in augmented reality and extended reality, expected the glasses to adopt US tech giant Qualcomm 's AR1 chip, the same chip used by the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. Meta's smart glasses are currently the most popular of their kind, accounting for more than 60 per cent of the global AI glasses market last year, according to market consultancy Counterpoint.
