Lorry driver charged with molesting stepdaughter during lockdown
The 38-year-old man, who has a child with the victim's mother, pleaded not guilty to all charges read before judge Sayani Mohd Nor.
For the first five charges, the accused is alleged to have committed the offences at a house and in a car in Segamat between 7am and 11.30pm between June 28 and Aug 15, 2021.
For the sixth charge, he allegedly committed a similar act in a car at 10pm on April 2 this year.
The charges were framed under Sections 14(a) and 14(b) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carry up to 20 years in jail and whipping upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Diyana Najihah Muhamed Fauzi led the prosecution, while the accused was represented by counsel Swarnamugi Parry.
The prosecution did not offer bail, citing safety concerns as the accused still lives with the victim.
The court allowed the application and fixed Aug 28 for case mention and submission of documents.

Govt strengthening legal framework to better protect children from sexual crimes
KUALA LUMPUR: The government is intensifying efforts to safeguard children from sexual crimes through legislative improvements and more comprehensive implementation strategies. These include amendments to the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 (Act 792), the expansion of special criminal courts, and ongoing training for legal officers, said Thiyagu Ganesan, the deputy director-general (Legal Reform Sector) of the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) under the Prime Minister's Department. He said several key amendments were made to the Act in 2023, which include replacing the term "child pornography" with "child sexual abuse material", introducing new offences such as live-streaming of sexual crimes and sexual extortion, and mandating compensation for victims. "Additionally, the government has recently passed the Online Safety Act 2025, which places the responsibility on digital platforms to remove child sexual abuse content. "It also introduces the safety-by-design concept to ensure a safer online environment for children,' he said during an interview on Bernama TV's Apa Khabar Malaysia programme on Monday (Aug 11). To broaden access to justice for victims, Thiyagu noted that the number of Special Courts for Sexual Crimes Against Children has been increased to 81 nationwide, along with the introduction of child-friendly mobile courts. "These mobile courts are equipped with a child witness room and will travel to where the child is located, eliminating the need for the child to travel to a physical courtroom, which may be distressing,' he said. Thiyagu also underscored the importance of specialised training for prosecutors, judges, and lawyers to improve the handling of child-related cases, in line with the 2023 legal reforms regulating the manner in which child witnesses are examined, cross-examined, and re-examined in court. He said the BHEUU is actively expanding awareness campaigns related to Section 19 of Act 792, which mandates all individuals to report suspected cases of child sexual crimes to the authorities. Touching on the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakan) Act 1999, he said amendments in 2023 led to the creation of a full-time position for a chief children's commissioner, along with two children's commissioners and one additional commissioner, all dedicated to strengthening oversight of government policies related to child protection. "Their role is to provide assistance, commentary and recommendations on government plans and policies, as well as to announce improvements. "If issues arise, they will actively speak out to ensure continuous progress,' he added. – Bernama

Snack seller nabbed for allegedly sexually assaulting six-year-old in Jasin
JASIN: A 63-year-old snack seller has been remanded for seven days on suspicion of sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl. The remand order against the suspect was issued by magistrate Mazana Sinin at the Magistrate's Court here on Monday (August 11) to assist investigations under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017. According to a source, the suspect's actions were discovered at 12pm on Saturday when the victim's grandmother was informed by her niece that the suspect was outraging her modesty outside their house in Kesang Tua here. The 56-year-old grandmother then ventured out to witness the suspect kissing her granddaughter's cheek and shouted at him. However, he ignored her shouts and walked away to a waiting car with a woman driver inside. As the grandmother confronted both, the driver allegedly claimed that the suspect was an employee, briefly apologised and drove off. The niece told the grandmother later that the suspect had allegedly attempted to give sweets to the victim, who resisted the offer, before outraging her modesty. Acting on a police report, a team from the Melaka police headquarters arrested the suspect on Sunday.

Police seek witnesses in Kajang child molestation case
KUALA LUMPUR: Police are searching for witnesses to assist in the investigation of an alleged child molestation case involving a Bangladeshi worker at a Kajang convenience store. The incident reportedly occurred on February 27, with the victim's father lodging a police report on March 12. Kajang Police chief ACP Naazron Abdul Yusof confirmed the case after a viral video surfaced on social media platform X, uploaded by user @Negeri09. The footage showed a man being assaulted alongside claims of sexual harassment involving the child. 'Checks found that a police report was lodged on March 12 by the victim's 32-year-old father. 'He claimed that his daughter was molested on Feb 27. The report was made after the victim disclosed the incident to her family on March 11,' Naazron said. Authorities face challenges as no CCTV footage from the location is available. 'The witness to the incident has yet to be located to assist the investigation as there is no closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the location,' he added. The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code and Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017. Police urge anyone with information to contact investigating officer Sgt Norfaziana Sirkam at 019-5759045 or the nearest police station. – Bernama
