Shah, Azizulhasni to sit out national championships
KUALA LUMPUR: The big boys will be out of the picture but plenty of action is expected when the National Track Cycling Championships kicks off at the Johor Velodrome in Iskandar Puteri tomorrow (May 21).
National track cycling team head coach Harnizam Basri confirmed that both Shah Firdaus Sahrom and Azizulhasni Awang will not be competing in the meet.
Shah has been troubled by knee tendonitis since February while Azizulhasni is still on the comeback trail as he has not raced since the Paris Olympics last year.
"Shah is still undergoing rehabilitation for his knee but has started riding again - though not at full pace - for the past two weeks," said Harnizam when contacted in Johor today.
"He did plan to race in just the keirin here, however, there is a rule where only two riders can represent each state in the elite events here.
"Shah's younger brother Ridwan and Akmal Nazimi Jusena will ride for Johor in the keirin, but Shah will still be at the races to give his support to all the riders.
"Datuk Azizulhasni will also not be racing here."
Harnizam said he does not expect national elite squad riders to be at their very best for the event as they have been undergoing a heavy strength training block and have not tapered for the event.
He is, however, keen to see riders from the state teams in action.
Johor and Terengganu are expected to continue their rivalry at the meet while Kedah are expected to shine in the women's events.
"Riders from the state teams always bring their best at the national championships and it will be no different this year," said Harnizam.
"We (coaches) are always on the lookout for new talent at the national championships and we are expecting to see some exciting young riders to shine this year.
"I believe it will be 50-50 between Johor and Terengganu for the overall title.
"Johor has strong sprinters while Terengganu has strong endurance riders."
Johor and Terengganu, who both have their own state velodromes, have among the strongest track cycling programmes in the country.

Rosman stays put to produce women's doubles champs
Great show: Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah in action against China's Li Jiying-Luo Xumin during their semi-final match at the Indonesian Open. — AP PETALING JAYA: National women's doubles head coach Rosman Razak is not planning to jump ship but will stick with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Rosman is fully aware of his task and he aims to remain firm in his objective of guiding all the shuttlers under his care until 2028 regardless of any decision made by his players to turn professional. Currently, his top pair and world No. 3 Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah have yet to sign a contract with the BA of Malaysia and there is a possibility that they could turn independent. Rosman is not letting his charges' ongoing unresolved contract distract him from his task at hand. 'Whatever the outcome of Pearly-Thinaah's contracts, I can't afford to think about this as it will affect me too,' said Rosman after overseeing a training session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday. 'I don't know the future but as long as they are training under me, I will do my best to guide them and keep working hard towards the biggest goal which is the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. 'BAM hired me for this and my responsibility is not just towards Pearly-Thinaah but also the other women's doubles pairs in the team.' Despite the contract issue, Rosman did well to guide Pearly-Thinaah to a runners-up finish in the recent Indonesian Open. The pair made it into their first ever World Tour Super 1000 final before going down fighting 25-23, 12-21, 19-21 to China's world No. 1 Liu Shengshu-Tan Ning. 'Pearly-Thinaah did not win the title but I'm happy with their performance in this tournament,' said Rosman. 'It's a good breakthrough for them and also a boost for the entire women's doubles department. I hope they can maintain their form. 'For me, it's normal for players to go through ups and downs. We need to support them more when they are struggling than when they are winning.' Pearly-Thinaah will next compete in the back-to-back Japan Open (July 15-20) and China Open (July 22-27).

Stay hungry for LA28: Rexy tells doubles aces despite recent success
PUTRAJAYA, June 10 — The success garnered by several national doubles players should not make them too comfortable to the point of affecting their performance. That was among the reminders given by the national doubles coaching director, Rexy Mainaky, to his charges given that they still have many tournaments to go and they still have a lot to catch up, besides having to work harder in their efforts to pursue the bigger dream, which is the Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) Olympic Games. 'If we talk about satisfaction, we should appreciate what the players have done with satisfaction. 'But we must remember not to let that satisfaction cause us to be complacent because there are still many tournaments and the Olympics is still far away,' he said when met after the Road To Gold meeting at Menara Kementerian Belia dan Sukan (KBS) here today. Earlier, two men's doubles pairs, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, displayed impressive performances in several recent tournaments they participated in. For Chia and Soh, they managed to win three titles in three months, namely the Asian Badminton Championships in April, the Thailand Open (May) and the Singapore Open earlier this month, while Man and Tee won the Malaysian Masters. In addition, the national women's doubles pair of Pearly Tan-M Thinaah were also no less impressive when they won the Thailand Open. Meanwhile, Rexy also expressed his gratitude to the RTG committee, especially to the Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh who started the programme early. 'I think we are the first country to prepare for LA28 by establishing the RTG programme. For me this is a positive development for the RTG athletes,' he said. — Bernama
