Montrose County Jail upgraded after survey finds inadequacies
The process behind the upgrade began seven years ago.
Funds for the project came from the Public Safety Sales Tax and Capital Improvement funds.
The total project cost was $8 million.
Geo Commander for the Montrose County Sheriff's Office Dean McNulty talked with WesternSlopeNow about the improvements made to the jail.
'We found out we had some pretty good deficiencies with the holding area. We were only able to hold about 15 inmates down there. With the new expansion remodel project, we increase that to 44. So, with an increased booking area, we also examined our video courtroom and found that that was inadequate. So, that's been expanded as well. We've got some administrative offices, and our kitchen was added on too.'
The project took one year to complete. Breaking ground in March 2024 and was completed in March 2025.

Overnight crash: Lexus plows into furniture shop
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — Around 10 p.m. Monday, the driver of a Lexus sedan was traveling westbound on Highway 6 and 50 near 25 Road when it struck several objects before rolling and crashing into Holman House Furniture. Roaring Fork School District looking for school director nominees
EAGLE COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) – The Roaring Fork School District, which stretches throughout Pitkin, Eagle and Garfield counties, is looking for candidates for the school director position. Their name would be placed on the ballot for the regular biennial school election which takes place Nov. 4. In this election, two directors will be elected and serve a four-year term representing districts A and E. To be eligible to run for the position, you need to be a resident of the director district which you would represent, and you're required to have been a registered elector of the school district for at least 12 consecutive months prior to the election. If you have been convicted of committing a sexual offense against a child, you are ineligible to run for the position. If you fit the bill and would like to run, you must file a written notice of intention while also getting a nomination petition signed by a minimum 50 eligible electors who are registered to vote in the regular biennial school election. Pedestrian transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries after crash with vehicle
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) – A pedestrian was sent to the hospital after a collision with a vehicle Tuesday afternoon, according to the Grand Junction Police Department. The crash occurred around 4:15 p.m. at the intersection of North Avenue and 28 3/4 Road. The victim has life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital by the Grand Junction Fire Department. Eastbound lanes on North Avenue will be closed for several hours as investigators remain on site. GJPD asks the community to find a different travel route during that time.
