MSU basketball moves up in latest CBS Sports way-too-early rankings
Michigan State basketball has moved up in the latest way-too-early rankings from CBS Sports.
Gary Parrish of CBS Sports has released his latest batch of way-too-early rankings, and the Spartans experienced a slight bump up the board. Parrish moved Michigan State up one spot to No. 14 in his latest rankings on CBS Sports.
Here's what Parrish had to say about the Spartans:
"This ranking is based on the Spartans returning four of the top eight scorers -- specifically Coen Carr, Jaxon Kohler, Jeremy Fears and Carson Cooper -- from a team that finished 30-7 and advanced to the Elite Eight of the 2025 NCAA Tournament. That core will be joined by a recruiting class highlighted by Samford transfer Trey Fort, FAU transfer Kaleb Glenn and four-star freshmen Cam Ward and Jordan Scott."
Michigan State is one of seven teams from the Big Ten in Parrish's rankings. Joining Michigan State was Purdue (No. 2), Michigan (No. 7), UCLA (No. 8), Oregon (No. 16), Ohio State (No. 23) and Wisconsin (No. 24).
Michigan State won the Big Ten this past season and reached the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans, however, will need to replace a number of key contributors from last year's squad, including Jase Richardson, Jaden Akins, Tre Holloman and Frankie Fidler.

'Drunk frat guys?' West Virginia coach rips Clemson for 'bogus' visitors' bullpen setup West Virginia Mountaineers coach Steve Sabins isn't a fan of Clemson baseball's Doug Kingsmore Stadium -- or at least not the visitors' bullpen area of the stadium. Sabins, whose team defeated the Tigers 9-6 at the Clemson Regional of the NCAA Tournament last Saturday before clinching the regional the following day against Kentucky, spoke about the environment at Doug Kingsmore on Friday ahead of West Virginia's best-of-three Super Regional showdown with the LSU Tigers at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge. What does Sabins think of the setup? Plenty, it seems. Among the adjectives the first-year Mountaineers coach said of the designated area for opposing pitchers to warm up at Clemson's stadium, Sabins called it "bogus" and "kind of a minor league thing." When asked by a reporter about any "issues" he had with the setup, Sabins sounded off: "I like that you called them 'issues.' I agree with 'issues.' I think they need to fix that deal... I think it's 8,000 fans at Clemson. They're excited. It's an awesome atmosphere. It's a little bit more like a minor league atmosphere I think than [LSU]. When I've watched ballgames here, they don't pump as much music into the stadium. The crowd here is raucous and really into the game, but it's more of a traditional college baseball setting." There weren't 8,000 fans on hand for Clemson vs. West Virginia. The State's Chapel Fowler noted that 6,475 people attended the game. And according to Clemson, the Doug Kingsmore Stadium attendance record is 6,891 when the Tigers defeated South Carolina, 5-3, on February 28. Sabins called Clemson's bullpen setup for opposing teams "bogus": "At Clemson, it's kind of that minor league thing where it's offensive-oriented. Every time that there's a ball or a walk or a hit, the music gets louder, and so it's a little bit like an artificial heart rate increase I think for pitchers and for defenders. The bullpen thing is bogus at Clemson." Sabins went on to say that the visitors' bullpen set up at Clemson could allow "drunk frat guys" to interfere with opposing relievers. "You can get so close and it's a net where as a pitcher is warming up, someone could actually grab a pitcher's arm," Sabins said. "And so I'm all for environment. It's just that as somebody was warming up, somebody could actually reach out and grab an arm." Did any Clemson fan actually grab a West Virginia player's arm? "I don't want to say that," Sabins said. "I don't know that for certain. It's close enough to be able to do that, so I think as a pitcher is warming up, psychologically, if you feel like you're in danger, you may adjust your mechanics or you may feel like it's too tight. And sure enough, not to discredit Jordan not, he's been around the league for a long time, but like the way that Matt Isa has run this team, selecting Brian Gregory, a former college coach to be his GM. Michigan State assistant coach to be his GM, it reminds me of the Charlotte Hornets under Michael Jordan when he hired Mitch Kupchak, former Chapel Hill guy, uh, UNC guy, Mitch Mitch Kupchak to be his GM and Buzz Peterson, Michael Jordan's roommate at college to be the assistant GM. It just feels like that recipe of of. Of hiring your buddies, hiring your college buddies, isn't necessarily a recipe for success, but it is something you can do as an owner. Advertisement Like, you pay $4 billion for this team. You want to take care of your guys, your buddies, you're more than welcome to do that. That is within your right. I just don't think that that is necessarily a recipe for success. And we've already seen. That Kevin Durant is reportedly gonna be shot this summer and might be on the trade block. It's not the first time that like friends have hired friends into the front office. We just saw over there in in in Utah that Danny Ainge, the CEO of the Utah Jazz, are hiring Austin Ainge, his son, to run the basketball ops for the team. So like keeping things all in the family, that's always been true in the NBA previous to the Jordan not higher. Advertisement The Phoenix Suns went with Monty Williams, who brought them to an NBA Finals. They went with Frank Vogel, who won an NBA championship. They went with Mike Budenhouser, who won an NBA championship. None of that worked, so why not get a guy who went to the same school as you? Like, if, if we're, if we're the, the process of going, like, we need somebody with championship experience, if that's not panning out, then try something different. Who knows? I I don't know, 40 year old guy with some good references and who went to the same school as me. Sure, what the hell? Why not? Let's give it a shot. Devin Booker, you like him? Advertisement Great.
