O'Donnell embracing 'exciting & interesting' Askou approach

Yahoo3 days ago
Stephen O'Donnell is enjoying the challenge of learning fresh "exciting and interesting" demands under Motherwell's third manager of the year.
After two years of relative stability under Stuart Kettlewell - who departed in January - Motherwell appointed their second manager of 2025 when Jens Berthel Askou replaced Michael Wimmer.
The Dane has a similar attacking philosophy to his predecessor but his desire to play the ball out from the back has been more noticeable.
Askou faces a big test on Tuesday when Motherwell host Greenock Morton in the Premier Sports Cup needing victory to guarantee progression to the second round.
On adapting to the new boss, O'Donnell said: "We found it with the old manager when he came in. It was a different kind of style, different ideas and the gaffer has probably amplified that a wee bit more.
"I find it exciting and interesting. You're learning different ideas and different ways in which people think of the game. You're always trying to learn and I think that's something I'm capable of doing. I'm excited to continue to learn.
"I've been enjoying it, trying to work on different things. The most important thing is that we are seeing progression on the pitch and in the style, and hopefully getting the wins that make that progression easier."

United square off with Inter and Juventus to sign dynamic midfielder

Manchester United appear to be in the running to sign a high-performing holding midfielder to their ranks. Since the start of the ongoing transfer window, focus has been placed on Man United upgrading their attacking lineup. Following the signing of Matheus Cunha, United have continued to be linked with a host of attacking talents, with the pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo dragging along. Now, it seems that United may be shifting their sights to the midfield. Filling the gap While midfielders do not appear to be a hot topic in the media, United manager Ruben Amorim will surely be looking for some fresh talent given his team's struggles. Christian Eriksen has left the club, thereby leaving a void that will need to be filled, while it remains to be seen how long Casemiro will still be able to perform at a high level. While Kobbie Mainoo has been a promising rising star, he has faced injury setbacks, while Manuel Ugarte still appears to be unproven. As a result, a capable holding midfielder might be required by United in order to bolster their ability to dictate the flow of play next season. Identifying their next target This morning, several reports suggested that United are interested in Sporting CP's Morten Hjulmand. Record reported this morning that United and Inter are set to battle with Juventus to sign the player, with the Italian club considering him a priority transfer. Furthermore, the report claimed that an offer starting at €60 million could be sufficient to sign the defensive midfielder, with the player's release clause set at €80 million. Still, the article claimed that it appears most likely that Hjulmand will remain at Sporting, seeing as no concrete offers have been made. Meanwhile, A Bola reiterated claims that United are linked to Hjulmand. 'The player's agents waved an offer of €30 to €40 million from Juventus, and there are also interested parties in England,' A Bola's report read. 'To everyone, including the Italians who, through the player's agents, sent their intentions of an offer to Alvalade, the Lions' management, as A Bola knows, has only one answer to give: a release clause of €80 million, or very close to it.' The race is on Hjulmand has proven UEFA Champions League experience, winning an impressive 67% of his ground duels in nine appearances last season. He also enjoyed 88% passing accuracy on average. (Sofascore) Given his proven ability to play at an elite level, United are sure to face a tough battle against Inter and Juventus should they decide to make a move for the Dane. Kettlewell demands Killie to be more 'threatening' in final third

Kilmarnock must be more "threatening" in front of goal against East Fife if they are to progress in the Premier Sports Cup insists Stuart Kettlewell. Killie recorded their third clean sheet of the group stage in their goalless draw with Kelty Hearts, but are now just one point ahead of both the Fifers and Livingston in Group H before Saturday's deciding games. Kettlewell's side will progress if they win at home against the League 1 outfit, but he knows they will need to improve their attacking play against Dick Campbell's side. "We have to be more threatening and we have to be able to go and express ourselves a wee bit more with some more composure to make sure we capitalise on opportunities," he told Killie TV. "If we think it's going to be any different – people not throwing their body on the line and defending their penalty box like Kelty Hearts did – then we are seriously mistaken. "It will be a difficult enough game for us and we will have to play with some real tempo to be able play through them and carve out opportunities. "What we will do between now and then is understand why we didn't execute it better and why we didn't finish. "Sometimes that's the last thing to come in pre-season so I don't become ultra negative, but the demands are there that we become more threatening in front of goal."

Hibs stalwart Leishman makes permanent Motherwell move

Hibernian defender Shannon Leishman has joined fellow SWPL 1 side Motherwell on a permanent deal. Leishman made over 150 appearances in Leith and became one of Hibs' most decorated, and longest-serving, players with four trophies and UWCL appearances under her belt. The 29-year-old joined Paul Brownlie's side in January last year on a short-term deal and went on to make nine appearances, helping Motherwell secure their first ever top-six finish. "I'm excited to be back at the club," Leishman told club media. "I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club last season. I knew when Paul spoke to me about coming back to the club that I would be keen to be a part of their plans for the season ahead. "I'm looking forward to meeting the squad again and getting started at K-Park." Head coach Brownlie added: "I'm really pleased to have Shannon back in the squad. "Shannon is an incredibly talented and experienced footballer, who showcased her ability in the squad last season. "To have someone of her ability in the squad and now on a permanent basis is really encouraging."
