Salar Masud, a semi-legendary figure who is believed to be the general and nephew of Turkish invader Mahmud Ghaznavi and is believed to have accompanied him on his plundering trips to India, including the attack on Somnath temple. Masud's rampaging moves are said to have been stopped by Maharaja Suheldev of Shravasti, another legendary figure, in what is now famous as the Battle of Bahraich in 1034 AD. They both find mention in Persian hagiography Mirat-i-Masudi, written in 17th century.
The Jeth Mela, a centuries-old fair traditionally held between May 15 and June 15 at the dargah Salar Masud in Bahraich, was cancelled earlier this year. The district administration cited concerns over law and order, referencing recent incidents such as the Pahalgam terrorist attack and communal tensions in Sambhal.
Other fairs in Masud's name, Sambhal's Neja Mela and Urs of Bale Miyan (as he is known in Gorakhpur) were also cancelled. This was followed by CM
Yogi Adityanath
's assertion that glorification of invaders amounted to treason which an "independent India will not tolerate".
Rajbhar, who made the demand during his meeting with CM Yogi Adityanath, pressed for organising a fair in Bahraich and a few other places. SBSP chief national general secretary Arvind Rajbhar, who was also present at the meeting, claimed that the CM agreed to the demand. He said that both the CM and Rajbhar were critical of the opposition parties who have been covertly backing such events linked to Muslim invaders. Rajbhar happens to be a cabinet minister for panchayati raj and minority welfare.
Not far from the dargah, a grand memorial in the name of king Suheldev has already come up. Suheldev is often referred to as the presiding deity of the Rajbhar community, who are present in a large number in several eastern UP districts with the BJP projecting him as a Hindutva demigod.
On February 16, 2021, the foundation stone of the Suheldev memorial in Bahraich was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi via video conferencing. The project includes the installation of an equestrian statue of Maharaja Suheldev at a site along the banks of Chittaura Lake in the district. The state govt is also planning to set up a museum based on the life of Suheldev.

Lucknow: In his first major directive after taking over as UP DGP, Rajeev Krishna on Friday unveiled a 10-point action plan to overhaul policing practices across the state, with emphasis on crime control, women safety, cybercrime response and police-public trust. The resolution must happen at source," he said. The DGP directed officers to take even the smallest crime seriously. "District police chiefs must personally curate a list of top 10 offenders and actively monitor them using tech tools," he asserted. The DGP noted that while UP made major strides in creating a safer environment for women, "we now need to make it ironclad." He cited 'Operation Pehchaan' from Agra, where software analysis helped identify repeat harassers near girls' colleges, as a model. Krishna said that UP is now known globally for its law and order. "This must be sustained through micro-planning, intelligence analysis, foresight, and leadership," he stressed. He directed district units to launch awareness drives and bridge the skill gap through training. "International best practices must be embedded," Krishna said, inviting feedback from the field. Calling welfare a "moral obligation," Krishna told senior officers to ensure that every constable feels the department stands by them. "Your force will deliver only when they feel heard and protected," he said. With over 60,000 new constables joining, many of whom cleared national-level exams, Krishna said talent mapping was critical. "We have experts in every field. UP will soon become India's first police force to deploy AI in core policing," Krishna announced. Calling training "the only sustainable path to reform," he urged officers to invest in continuous, qualitative capacity-building. "Well-trained officers deliver better justice to citizens," he said. Video proof, priest affidavit now must for marriage certs in UP
Ghaziabad: UP govt has announced significant reforms in its marriage registration policy, mandating video evidence of ceremonies and physical verification of priests. The new directives, issued on Friday following an Allahabad High Court order, said priests must submit notarised affidavits, appear as witnesses on behalf of couples at registration offices and possess a pen drive containing videos of the wedding. Marriage registrars would now accept applications from couples only if one of them is a permanent resident of that particular district. The govt move follows an HC order from May 12, seeking to address a rise in forged certificates and false documents linked to bogus marriages. The court was hearing a writ petition filed by a Greater Noida couple who claimed to have got married in Arya Samaj Mandir in June last year and secured a registration certificate in Ghaziabad. During the hearing, the court found that the certificate lacked the priest's name, the registered address of the Arya Samaj Mandir, and details of witnesses. The couple also did not appear before the local police, but sent a request seeking protection from their families from the post-office located on the HC premises. The HC ordered a probe into widespread irregularities in the state's marriage registration system, particularly in districts like Ghaziabad, Noida and Prayagraj. The scale of the problem became evident when the probe revealed that Ghaziabad alone recorded 29,022 marriages between Aug 2023 and Aug 2024 – nearly 10 times more than other key districts like Prayagraj (2,019), Gorakhpur (2,284), and Varanasi (2,711). More startlingly, smaller districts like Shrawasti and Chitrakoot registered only 51 and 112 marriages, respectively, during the same period. The investigations also revealed that couples from places like Ahmedabad claimed to have solemnised their marriages in Maharashtra, yet obtained registrations in Ghaziabad to secure court protection orders. In these cases, supporting documents such as Aadhaar and PAN cards often turned out to be forged or altered. Other fraudulent practices included certificates issued by non-existent societies, fictitious witnesses, and cases where minors were presented as adult brides. The HC also observed that the Uttar Pradesh Marriage Registration Rules, 2017, offered limited safeguards. For instance, these rules did not require applicants to declare specific customs observed during the wedding, while the digital registration portal provided no means for marriage officers to reject suspicious requests or track those denied. Concerned about widespread exploitation of these gaps, the HC recommended amendments to the 2017 rules. Until then, the measures announced by the govt will stay. "Under the new directives, marriage registration applications will only be accepted from couples if any one present with them is a permanent resident of the district where they are applying. This applies to either the bride, groom, or their parents. Temporary accommodation documents, such as unregistered rent agreements, will no longer be considered valid proof of residence," said Pushpendra Kumar, assistant inspector-general (AIG, stamps), Ghaziabad. In cases where a couple register their marriage without parental consent, the priest who performs the ceremony must be physically present at the time of registration. "They need to submit affidavits with complete details and video evidence," Kumar said. The notification, signed by inspector-genera (stamps) Sameer Verma, allows marriage officials some flexibility if parents or adult family members from both sides are present. "If parents or adult family members of both parties are present and vouch for the marriage, the marriage registration officer may waive the video and priest affidavit requirements, provided they're satisfied with the marriage's authenticity," the notification read. Each registration performed under the new rules would have a special stamp, while the priest's affidavit and related documents would be subject to thorough verification. District offices would have to maintain a separate register containing credentials of the priest, such as their Aadhaar details, phone numbers, and photographs. "We applied the residency rule locally in Ghaziabad back in April in keeping with the high court's interim directions. The other rules will also be implemented with immediate effect," AIG Kumar said. HC bench orders UP govt not to demolish any madrassa in Shravasti
Lucknow: The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court has ordered that the Uttar Pradesh authorities would not take any coercive action against more than two dozen madrassas of Shravasti district. It also cautioned the state that it would not demolish any madrassas which have approached the court. The bench asked the state government to file its reply against the writ petitions till July 3. A bench of Justice Jaspreet Singh passed the order on the petitions moved by Madarssa Moinul Islam Qasmiya Samiti and 26 other madrassas individually in Shravasti. In April, the UP had govt launched a major drive against illegal encroachments in districts near the India-Nepal border, Bahraich, Shravasti, Siddharthnagar, Maharajganj, and Balrampur, demolishing hundreds of unauthorised structures, including unrecognised religious institutions. Illegal constructions were demolished in Shravasti and Bahraich, while in Siddharthnagar, 12 illegal structures were identified and notices issued. In Lakhimpur Kheri, a day-long survey found no illegal encroachments. These actions target long-standing illegal occupations of valuable border land, which the Yogi govt is determined to reclaim, the UP govt order said.
