Deserving winners: on South Africa's win at Lord's

The Hindu16-06-2025
It was a long wait that culminated in delight. Until Saturday's high at Lord's, South Africa was often resigned to playing second fiddle in the big cricketing contests. The Proteas always had strong units and some great players, but a stumble in the climactic stages of ICC events became the norm. Finally, when Temba Bavuma's men prevailed over defending champion Australia in the World Test Championship's summit clash in London, many ghosts were laid to rest. South Africa's previous ICC silverware was the title in the Wills International Cup at Dhaka in 1998. That tournament became the precursor to the Champions Trophy and even as this particular event grew, South Africa regressed with comical run-outs, dropped catches and miscalculation of rain-rules often becoming steep hurdles. To concede a first innings lead and then to chase 282 in a grim fourth innings pursuit was never easy, but a dogged Bavuma and centurion Aiden Markram ensured that the early strikes of spearhead Kagiso Rabada were never wasted. The trio performed admirably and it was also a reflection of the diverse ethnic groups that constitute South Africa, often called the Rainbow Nation. This fact and the need for unity was reiterated through Bavuma's impassioned post-match speech. The skipper truly led from the front.
Cricket needed this result as whispers of the 'Big Three' of India, Australia and England, calling the shots and elbowing out other opposition in the overall scheduling have been doing the rounds. Besides applying salve to a country searching for cricketing glory, the South African triumph also revealed that other teams can acquire the champions' halo. To get past Pat Cummins and his men is always tough but Bavuma and his troops held firm in an engrossing Test. Australia has a potent attack that never allows batters to settle, and to counter this and emerge on top is a tribute to an outfit that was acutely conscious about past failures. Even last year, Markram's men slipped in the ICC T20 World Cup final against India. From being tagged as chokers and to then become the number one Test squad is a stupendous achievement. South Africa never had it easy in cricket as its previous apartheid policy rightly left it isolated from sport. The comeback was gradual from the 1990s and then the match-fixing crisis that consumed Hansie Cronje, was a mighty blow. To put all these setbacks and losses behind them needed a special effort and it was this that Bavuma and his men provided at cricket's spiritual home.

From slums to Asian glory: India's U20 women clinch historic medal at Asia Rugby Championship

Indian rugby team beat Uzbekistan 12-5 to win the bronze medal Kolkata: 'I have a lot of belief in this group of girls. They are the future of Indian women's rugby!' These words of India's rugby coach Kiano Fourie, during an online interaction with TOI, showed his confidence in the team that scripted a historic continental medal for India on Sunday at the Asia Rugby U20 Championship 2025 in Rajgir, Bihar. The U20 Indian women beat Kazakhstan 17-10 and the UAE 31-7 while losing 7-31 to Hong Kong and finishing second from Pool B. They lost 7-28 to China in the semifinal, but came back with a purpose to beat Uzbekistan 12-5 in the bronze medal match. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! While the feat put the team in the limelight, this bunch of girls has been quietly climbing the rungs of success in age-group tournaments. 'I came in contact with this group in 2023,' narrated Fourie. 'Before that, I was the head coach of the U18 women's team that won silver at the Asian meet in Taiwan. We beat the UAE in the group stage and then lost narrowly to them 7-10 in a well-contested final.' The South African came to India in 2022 as a mentor to the Bihar rugby teams and then worked at Rugby India's High Performance Centre in Bhubaneswar. 'I knew that this group was special back then,' Fourie said of the U18 tournament. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Paras Sector 59 Gurgaon | Paras Floret Low-Rise Flats Paras The Florett Book Now Undo 'The U20 team is a mix of the top 12 from the U18 continental meets of 2023 & '24.' Contrary to the current rhetoric around 'homogeneity' in the country, the diversity in their regional identities — their captain Bhumika Shukla is from a slum in Rajasthan, four players are from Bihar and two from western Odisha — posed no threat to their development as a unit. 'It's the communication among us that gives our team the edge,' explained Ritu Majhi, an integral part of India's attacking lineup, who saw her dream of an Indian medal come true on Sunday. A soft-spoken Majhi reiterates, 'I always liked to fight! Not in the way people do unnecessarily, but to be able to display my strength and stamina in a rule-based competition.' While the Odisha girl had seen other members of her family pursue rugby in her childhood, for her state-mate, 18-year-old Mamali Singh, it was a more amusing reason to choose a sport that's still in its nascent stage in India. Poll Do you believe that the U20 Indian women's rugby team can inspire a new generation of players in India? Definitely Maybe Not sure Not likely 'I just loved the shape of the ball when I first saw it. And I told myself, 'I have to play that game with the egg-shaped ball',' the promising Singh, who is also in line to be part of the U18 women's team for the upcoming Asia Rugby U18 Championship in Hohhot, China, said. Both of them were drawn to rugby when sent to study at KIITS International School and soon, like a number of their teammates, found themselves in the radar of Rugby India and coach Fourie. 'There were no U20 tournaments in the last two years. But with the event hosted in India, we were keen on doing really well,' said Fourie, whose players did not disappoint after a three-week camp hosted by SAI Kolkata 'with the best training facilities', and inclusion of a stipend from Rugby India for every player. Meanwhile, the senior women's rugby team qualified this year for the top-tier league in Asia by claiming silver at Asia Rugby 7s Trophy and a place among the top-eight Asian women's teams. They will start the campaign with October's Asia Rugby 7s Series Round 2 in Colombo and stay on course with their South African coach's belief: 'These girls can take India to the heights in rugby that will inspire the next generation of rugby players.' 'Shubman Gill and India need Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli': Star India cricketer reflects on No.1 and No.3 position in ODIs

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Following their Test cricket retirement in May this year, India's batting greats Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have now officially entered the final stage of their illustrious careers, leaving questions over their international future. However, India's Test transition went smoothly in the absence of the stalwarts during the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, with new captain Shubman Gill, along with KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Rishabh Pant, securing their highest-ever series aggregates. India's next ODI assignment is scheduled in October against Australia, while the World Cup is still two years away, leaving uncertainty over whether Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will remain part of the plans until then. By the time of the tournament, Rohit will be 40 and Kohli 39, provided they continue to enjoy the backing of the BCCI and the team management under Gautam Gambhir. Meanwhile, reports also suggest that Rohit could soon be asked to step down as ODI captain to pave the way for Shubman Gill's rise as India's leader in the 50-over format heading into the 2027 World Cup. Suresh Raina reflects on the experience of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the Team Meanwhile, star India cricketer Suresh Raina thinks both white-ball cricket star have a lot more to give and that Gill and Team India will benefit greatly from their one-day format knowledge prior to the World Cup. 'India don't have dependable players at No. 1 and No. 3 (in ODIs) at the moment, especially when chasing,' Raina told in an inteview with Telecom Asia Sport. 'Rohit and Virat's experience is very important. It's crucial for the seniors to stay involved with the juniors. Shubman (Gill) has done really well, but he needs players like Virat and Rohit,' the 2011 World Cup winner added. Just five months ago, Rohit and Kohli's remarkable performances in the Champions Trophy in the United Arab Emirates erased the memories of a disappointing Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour to Australia. While Rohit scored the most runs and was named player of the match in a winning final against New Zealand, Kohli's 84-run knock and game-winning century against Pakistan helped set up the semi-final victory over Australia. 'They have won the Champions Trophy, they have won the World Cups. Virat won the last IPL also. For the astute leadership they have shown during their respective careers, they need to be part of the dressing room,' Raina added. Rohit-Kohli might return in October Rohit and Kohli might make their comeback to international cricket in October when the Men in Blue tour Australia for three ODIs and T20Is, as India will be participating in the T20 Asia Cup and the ensuing home Test matches in September. On October 19, the series' one-day leg will kick off in Perth, with matches to follow in Adelaide and Sydney.

Is it time for India to back Shubman Gill as all-format captain?

India captain Shubman Gill (Ben Whitley/PA via AP) India are in a happy dilemma. Across all three formats, they are atop the ICC charts, and there is a sense of stability around the Indian cricket landscape after a tumultuous four-month phase from Oct last year to Jan 2025. With Shubman Gill shaping up as the new face of Indian cricket, discussions have arisen about appointing the 25-year-old as the all-format captain. India swept every match in T20 cricket this year, leaving little reason to question Suryakumar Yadav 's position in the format. The team won the Champions Trophy, the last ODI tournament they played, under Rohit Sharma 's captaincy. Sharma retired from Tests but remains in charge of ODIs. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! However, the Mumbai man will be 40 when India compete in the ODI World Cup in South Africa in Oct-Nov 2027, and few in Indian cricket believe he will continue as a player that long. Consequently, there is a strong chance that Gill, a brilliant ODI player himself, will be promoted to the 50-over skipper sooner rather than later. This raises the question: what happens in T20 cricket? 'SKY', who is recovering from a sports hernia operation, is striving to be fit for the Asia Cup from Sept 9. Axar Patel is his current deputy, but it is unlikely the all-rounder will be viewed as a long-term captaincy option by India. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Highest Paying Degrees For 2025 Best Paying Degrees | Search Ads Learn More Undo In such a scenario, there is talk of making Gill the T20 vice-captain, grooming him to take over as an all-format captain after the T20 World Cup in India in Feb-March 2026. Historically, the one-captain theory has worked for India. MS Dhoni won the T20 World Cup in 2007 while serving as the red-ball vice-captain and was poised to become the all-format leader. In 2011, he captained all formats when the team won the 50-over World Cup, and a similar situation applied when the 2013 Champions Trophy was won in England. By the 2024 T20 World Cup, India became world champions again with Rohit Sharma as the all-format captain. Between 2015 and 2017, India had two captains, with Dhoni leading in white-ball cricket and Virat Kohli leading in Tests. Devang Gandhi, the national selector when Kohli became the white-ball captain in early 2017, told TOI that the 'transition was smooth.' 'At that stage, Kohli was well entrenched as Test captain and playing superbly in white-ball cricket. Dhoni, too, wanted to play the last few years of international cricket without baggage, and the captaincy transition went very well. From a cricket perspective, I feel the Gill situation is pretty much the same,' Gandhi said. Poll Should Shubman Gill be appointed as the all-format captain of India? Yes, he has proven himself No, he needs more experience Gill is a brand-man's delight. Like Dhoni's 'captain cool' image commanded massive brand value in the 2008-15 era, the swagger of 'King Kohli' brought a fresh perspective to the financial aspects of the sport. Rohit, the 'bindaas boss' in three formats, was equally appealing while performing well. Now, everything suggests that Gill as the 'face of new India' will work like magic. These factors are relevant when the player performs effectively, and that is where Gill shines. His ODI average is an impressive 59.04 with a strike rate of 99.56, and in T20Is, he averages a respectable 30.47 with a strike rate of 139.27. It is noteworthy that he was India's T20 captain in Zimbabwe last year right after the T20 World Cup and performed well in Sri Lanka thereafter. 'Don't forget that he was not dropped when India was playing T20 cricket in South Africa towards the end of the year, a series India won 3-1. He was rested after the New Zealand series in India as the team was about to embark on the tour of Australia, and after his immense success in the IPL as a player and captain, everything suggests he should be vice-captain in the Asia Cup,' Gandhi said. Is workload management an issue? Recently, India's three biggest rivals have had multiple captains. Australia have been led by Pat Cummins in Tests and ODIs, while Mitch Marsh has been appointed T20 captain. England have Ben Stokes as their Test captain, with Harry Brook taking over as white-ball captain from Jos Buttler. South Africa shares the role between Temba Bavuma (Tests and ODIs) and Aiden Markram (T20Is), while New Zealand has Tom Latham and Mitchell Santner as their two captains. An all-format captain must play most games unless two national teams are playing two formats simultaneously. In such cases, workload management becomes a concern, but India's former strength and conditioning coach Ramji Srinivasan says 'it differs from batters to bowlers.' 'For Cummins and Stokes, who have considerable bowling workloads, it is understandable that they relinquish captaincy of one format to preserve themselves. And remember, they're well into their 30s. A batting captain, meanwhile, doesn't necessarily face that workload pressure. So it works fine for a much-younger Gill. Probably the more important issue is keeping the mind fresh,' Ramji told TOI. For now, the best way forward for Gill is to be Suryakumar's apprentice in T20Is until Feb-March. After that, there will be enough time to make a final decision, considering all results.
