India Today25-04-2025

The Andhra Pradesh government will initiate disciplinary action against suspended IPS officer PV Sunil Kumar for making alleged unauthorised foreign trips during the Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government's tenure.Chief Secretary K Vijayanand announced the government's decision to begin disciplinary proceedings in an order issued late Thursday. In the order, Vijayanand mentioned that Kumar has been given an opportunity to submit a written defence or appear in person to present his case within the next 30 days.advertisementThe state government has framed detailed charges against Kumar, which include a statement of misconduct and misbehaviour. The charges pertain to several foreign trips he made without proper approval.
The government also demanded Kumar to specifically admit or deny each article of charge and said that if no written statement is filed in his defence or if he fails to appear in person, then action will be taken against him on the basis of the material available on record. The government's investigation reveals that Kumar, during his tenure as the Additional Director General of Police (CID) from October 2019 to January 2023, and later as the Director General of the Andhra Pradesh Disaster Response and Fire Services from March 2023 to June 2024, made multiple unauthorised foreign trips. One of the most notable instances involves his visit to Georgia in March 2024, where he was granted permission for casual leave from March 1 to 4. However, Kumar allegedly deviated from the approved itinerary and traveled to the UAE without the necessary clearance. He said this amounts to the violation of several rules under the All India Services (Conduct) Rules, 1968.advertisementLikewise, the Chief Secretary listed alleged violations during Kumar's visits to Sweden, USA, UK and UAE. He also alleged that Kumar did not even procure permission for some of those visits.Hence, the Chief Secretary noted, Kumar had exhibited gross misconduct and indiscipline and acted in a manner 'unbecoming of a government servant', which are leading to the disciplinary proceedings.Must Watch

Bengaluru stampede: Railways minister Somanna slams government response to stampede

Union minister of state for railways V Somanna on Sunday stated that even an entire year's state budget can't compensate for the tragic loss of lives in the stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium. His remarks came in response to questions from the media on the govt's revised compensation of Rs 25 lakh per victim, up from the initial Rs 10 lakh. "It was known that Royal Challengers Bengaluru reached the IPL final... the authorities should have planned accordingly. Unfortunately, the chief minister mishandled the situation. Perhaps he acted on poor advice from his associates," said Somanna. The minister also criticised the suspension of police commissioner B Dayananda, calling it unjust. "I've known the work of the IPS officer for many years. His suspension is unfair, especially when he had no direct role in the stampede. It was a good decision to appoint him as commissioner, and he should be reinstated immediately. The govt has gone off track, and it must be held accountable for this tragedy," he added. Reflecting on his past association with Siddaramaiah, Somanna expressed disappointment over what he described as a shift in his leadership style.

Chirag Paswan makes it official, throws his hat in Bihar Assembly Poll ring

New Delhi: Union minister and LJP (RV) leader Chirag Paswan announced at a ' Nav Sankalp Rally ' in Arrah, Bihar, on Sunday that he will contest the upcoming assembly elections, heeding to his party leaders' demand and putting to rest speculations on this which have been going on for some time. "A question is being asked whether Chirag Paswan will contest assembly elections from Bihar. My answer is yes! I will contest from every seat in Bihar to make Bihar first and Biharis first . The biggest thing is that I will contest elections for Bihar and will contest elections for Biharis," he said amid loud cheers from people present at the rally. Sources told ET that Paswan had taken a decision on this much earlier and wanted to announce it at a public event. He has been maintaining that the NDA will contest the upcoming assembly elections under the leadership of Nitish Kumar and that Kumar would be made the chief minister. But now, he has positioned himself quite differently. Clearly, Paswan is eyeing a major role post-elections. A few days ago, his party leader announced that if Paswan decided to contest elections, he would contest from a general seat rather than an SC seat to show that he is a state leader acceptable to all. Recently, he has been quite vocal over issues concerning Bihar. On Wednesday, Paswan expressed regret over the death of a minor rape victim from Muzaffarpur and in his letter to Kumar, he called it an abject failure of the state's law and order system. Live Events A BJP leader told ET that anyone, including Paswan, can contest from the seats allotted to his party after seat sharing. "Paswan has said that he is working under the leadership of Nitish Kumar and is committed to making him the CM. Kumar and we are contesting 243 seats with the same goal," JDU spokesman Rajeev Ranjan told ET.
