KL Illustration Fair 2025 goes big this year, expanding its scale and ambition

The Kuala Lumpur Illustration Fair (KLIF) 2025 returns this week, bigger and bolder than ever, taking over three floors of the GMBB creative mall in Kuala Lumpur with a mix of artist booths, gallery showcases, art rooms, and interactive installations.
This year's fair, from May 1-4, features 180 artists, illustrators, toy makers and designers from Malaysia, South-East Asia and beyond. Visitors start at the ground floor before exploring the Greybox, with the fourth and fifth floors showcasing KLIF 2025's artist line-up.
"KLIF now takes a more immersive, inclusive approach, shifting from a showcase format to a dynamic mix of exhibitions, artist booths, talks, and live drawing — encouraging deeper audience engagement and creator dialogue,' says Si Juan, a curator and one of KLIF's pioneer team members.

"With a 10,000 visitor target in sight, KLIF has also placed stronger emphasis on thematic zoning, highlighting regional narratives, emerging talent, and industry relevant topics through dedicated spaces like the Asian City Pavilion and Illustration Futures segment. These curated sections not only guide audience flow but also provide layers of discovery and storytelling. The fair's expanded programming now integrates community-driven content and collaborative projects, making it both a celebration and catalyst for illustration culture in the region," he adds.
The featured artists include Enya Lim, a Malaysian teenager who blends her skateboarding spirit with artistic flair; Naho Ogawa, a Tokyo-based Japanese picture book artist returning to KL after 13 years; Jakarta pop-art sensation Muchlis Fachri (Muklay), known for his urban-inspired work; and multidisciplinary artist Syukur Rani, who combines surrealism and pop art with bold, dreamlike visuals.

Also featured are I Love Doodle aka Lim Heng Swee, known for his minimalist, pun-filled doodles (often featuring cats) that spread joy globally; Shafiq Nordin, whose chimeric beasts confront social injustices; and graffiti artist Abdul Rashade (Acit), known for Nusantara flora and fauna.
Be sure to also check out "The Reflection Tunnel" on the third floor, an immersive experience by Filamen and Enabling Academy.
In this four-room installation, visitors will experience a sensory journey of light, shadow and reflection, urging them to confront societal biases and embrace inclusivity.

"In collaboration with Enabling Academy via GMBB, we created an immersive tunnel experience to raise awareness about neurodiversity - especially ADHD, autism, and dyslexia - using art and tech to make complex topics more engaging and interactive for KLIF," says Abdul Shakir, one of the co-founders of digital art outfit Filamen.
On the fourth floor is a continuation of KLIF's collaboration with Yunnan Arts University, as well as an exhibition by ArtPage x A4A Gallery, featuring works by Chinese artist Lin Wenjun (Junc).

#SHOWBIZ: Sofyank teams up with HK superstar Louis Koo in viral promo
KUALA LUMPUR: A surprise collaboration between Hong Kong screen legend Louis Koo and Malaysia's very own VFX prodigy Sofyank has taken local social media by storm, following the release of a promotional video for Koo's film Behind The Shadow. The impressive 50-second spot racked up over a million views in just 12 hours, and for Sofyank, the experience was surreal. "Louis is one of the first Hong Kong actors I've ever worked with. I grew up watching his movies — to now share the screen with him feels like a dream come true," shared Sofyank. Despite Koo's packed schedule, the video shoot was completed in 20 minutes. "He looked really serious at first, but he was incredibly down-to-earth. In fact, it was he who suggested some comedic moments — including the popcorn bit," added Sofyank. The video features Sofyank walking through a cinema hallway holding popcorn, before accidentally bumping into a crowd and dropping it. Koo "steps out" of a movie poster and hands him a fresh box — while dropping some Bahasa Malaysia lines in his Cantonese-accented voice: "Jom sapot!" (Let's support!). Netizens praised their pairing as refreshing and heartwarming. 'Still Live' series in KL creates a shared space for sound and sketch

Photo: Maisu Blurring the lines between sight and sound, the latest edition of Ur-Mu's Still Live series pairs live painting with acoustic music for an immersive experience. Still Live – an initiative by the Ur-Mu art private museum – takes place at Boombong, The Toffee, Jalan Raja Chulan in Kuala Lumpur on June 14. Ur-Mu, which operates three distinct art gallery spaces in downtown Kuala Lumpur, will open the doors of Ur-Mu @ Toffee – its Raja Chulan outpost housing two private art collections – as part of this weekend's Still Live programme. Each ticket includes a pre-show tour led by renowned art collector and lawyer Pakhruddin 'Pakha' Sulaiman, whose 1990s Malaysian art collection fills Ur-Mu@Toffee on Level 6. Inspired by the art term 'still life', the series allows the audience to enjoy a live acoustic set and try their hand at live drawing. Nur Khairi Hamidi, Ur-Mu's museum coordinator, explains that while still life drawings traditionally feature inanimate objects like fruits or flowers, Still Live adds a twist – here, it's the performing musicians who become the subject. 'The idea behind Still Live is to basically combine two unique jam sessions: live acoustic performance and live drawing by the audience. We wanted to gather crowds of both fine art and music enthusiasts into one event, and break the boundaries between the two disciplines,' says Khairi. The sold-out first edition, held on Feb 22 at Ur-Mu Bukit Bintang, brought together KL-based acts Faye Faire, Note/Void, and RuoH for an intimate night of music (folk to post rock) and art. 'The musicians also had a lot of fun with the gig, because it was their first time being drawn while they performed,' he adds. The weekend's Still Live edition promises an equally compelling line-up, featuring husband-and-wife indie folk duo Satwo – joined for the first time by cellist Azrul Asyraf – alongside singer-songwriters Umar Akmal, and Syiqin Azln. For Satwo, Still Live will actually be its second art-related performance this year. Last month, the duo performed its rendition of two poems – Satu and Gurindam Apati – by Pahang-born writer and filmmaker Dr Razli Dalan at the launch of his illustrated poetry book Koleksi Puisi Puisi Sendu at the Kokopelli gallery in Petaling Jaya. In the live scene, Rafiz and his wife Tuan Mazlinna Tuan Abdul Malek – better known as Maz – have connected with audiences across a range of art and music events. "Since the Renaissance, music has inspired painters, opening emotional and imaginative spaces,' says Rafiz. 'Today, from album covers to performance visuals, music gives soul to form and art gives face to sound – together, they create deeper meaning," he adds.
