MTHQA 2025 sees improved performances with stricter screening
Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee attributed this to stricter preliminary screening.
He stated that this approach ensures only highly qualified participants progress to the competition stage.
'The recitation in terms of melody and tajwid meets the expectations of the judges and is not like before, where some participants were somewhat excessive,' he said.
Sirajuddin, who chairs the panel of judges, highlighted the strong mastery displayed by memorisation participants.
'For memorisation, there's nothing you can't answer. He gave a quote from the verse, and continued... the majority, you could say 99 per cent of the memorisation participants were able to answer,' he explained.
Malaysian reciter Wan Sofea Aini Wan Mohd Zahidi shared her aspirations if she wins the competition.
'If I'm lucky enough to win, Insya-Allah, I want to continue my efforts to teach young people,' she said.
Other participants include Mohamad Habil Walizada from Afghanistan and Kaiyrbay Dauken from Kazakhstan.
The event is broadcast live on RTM's TV1 and JAKIM's official social media channels at 8.15 pm.
Held under the theme 'Membangun Ummah MADANI,' the assembly runs from Aug 2 to 9.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will attend the closing ceremony tomorrow at 8 pm. - Bernama

MTHQA 2025: Malaysia clinches double victory in Quran recitation
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia claimed both the men's and women's titles in the Tilawah (recitation) categories at the 65th International Al-Quran Recitation and Memorisation Assembly (MTHQA) tonight. Aiman Ridhwan Mohamad Ramlan won the men's qari (male reciter) title with a score of 97.01 per cent, edging out Indonesia's Ahmad Azroi Hasibuan (95.13 per cent) and Turkey's Muhammed Yahya Yildizhan (93.88 per cent), who placed second and third respectively. In the qariah (female reciter) category, Wan Sofea Aini Wan Mohd Zahidi took first place with 95.88 per cent, ahead of Morocco's Fatima Zahra Assafar (89.38 per cent) and Indonesia's Nur Rahmiyatin Adhya (87.59 per cent). Prizes were presented by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the closing ceremony at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur. Also present were Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, and Imam of the Al-Nabawi Mosque in Madinah Sheikh Dr Salah Muhammad Al-Budair. In the men's memorisation category, Germany's Usamah Barghouth topped the field with 98.25 per cent, followed by Syria's Mohammad Abdullah Masasati (98.01 per cent) and India's Mohammad Jamil Farhat (97.25 per cent). Champions in both Tilawah and Memorisation categories received RM40,000 in cash, jewellery sponsored by the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation (YaPEIM), additional prizes and certificates of appreciation. Johor Regent and Ahmad Zahid attend Singapore National Day Parade 2025
SINGAPORE: The Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, and his consort Che' Puan Mahkota Khaleeda Johor attended Singapore's National Day Parade at Padang on Saturday. The event celebrated Singapore's 60th year of independence with a grand display of national pride. Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi represented the Malaysian government at the invitation of Singapore. Also present were the Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. This marked the first time foreign dignitaries were invited to the parade since 2019. Themed 'Majulah Singapura,' the parade began with a pre-show featuring the SAF parachute team, the Red Lions. Naval divers from the Republic of Singapore Navy performed the 'Jump of Unity' at Marina Bay. President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong arrived at 6.30 pm to officially start the main event. A record 40 marching contingents participated, the largest since 1990. The military tattoo showcased performances by the SAF Band, Singapore Police Force Band, and student performers. The Republic of Singapore Air Force delivered a special aerial tribute, thrilling the 27,000-strong crowd. The Mobile Column returned with a combined aerial-flypast, maritime display, and drive-past involving multiple agencies. A total of 170 assets were featured, including new military equipment making their debut. The show segment included 39 local artistes and over 3,000 performers, including Malaysian rock legend Datuk Ramli Sarip. A 360-degree centre stage, the largest in NDP history, was a highlight of the celebrations. The evening ended with fireworks and a nationwide 'Majulah Moment,' uniting Singaporeans in reciting the National Pledge. National Day festivities will continue on Sunday at five heartland locations across Singapore. - Bernama
