Cash-strapped Costco customers can now stock up for summer without money in the bank.
The cut-price retailer is revolutionizing their shopping experience by partnering with 'pay over time' platform Affirm.
Starting this week, Costco members can undergo a 'quick, real-time eligibility check' with Affirm before choosing from 'personalized' monthly payment plan options.

But there is one catch: Sales must be between $500 and $17,500, meaning shoppers can't use Affirm for small purchases.
However, Affirm honcho Pat Suh says that's no big deal, given that Costco customers often buy in bulk.

'As summer approaches, we're seeing more consumers turn to Affirm to prepare for the season ahead—whether it's outdoor entertaining essentials, like a new barbecue or patio furniture, a storage shed, or a new set of appliances,' he declared in an announcement released on Wednesday.
'Costco members in particular know the value of planning ahead and buying in bulk. We're excited to offer them an alternative to traditional credit, helping them confidently manage their spending on larger purchases without hidden fees.'

It comes as many Americans turn to 'buy now, pay later' platforms to pay for food amid inflation and ongoing economic uncertainty.

Earlier this year, Klarna partnered with DoorDash so that users can pay off their fast food orders in installments.
The announcement from Affirm and Costco comes just a week after Costco revealed sales growth slowed during the month of April.
According to Supermarket News, Costco said comp-store foot traffic was up 4.2% in April, down from 6.1% in March.

When it comes to the service industry, there may be no busier place at any given time than a Costco food court. One Reddit user's recent post recalled his first day on the job and how he wanted to quit. Reddit user "Ok-Development4027" shared his experience on a page dedicated to conversations about Costco. "First day working at Costco food court I want to quit," he titled a post that quickly received more than 1,000 comments and counting. The 21-year-old employee said he attended an orientation that "went smooth[ly]" the day before his Friday shift. When it came time to work his first shift from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., he admitted that he thought the 8-hour schedule, which included a 30-minute break, "was already a lot for my first day, but I brushed it off." He quickly realized he was "in for a ride" once he started. The new food court employee noted that the customer flow "was steady since the morning, then later in the day it got worse and worse." He said he wasn't sure what his role was. By 6 p.m. or 7 p.m., he said, he "wanted to walk out" because "it was nonstop hectic." He compared himself to "a zoo animal being watched by all the customers on the inside as I try to move as fast as I can." The novice employee pointed out that there's "like a whole pizza being sold every 2 minutes and I think I might quit." He went on to say that he wasn't sure what his role was – "they tell me I'm a closer, yet I was [there] in the morning doing prep stuff." "Nonetheless, it was extremely overwhelming for my first day [there] and it might be it." Commenters were mostly encouraging, telling him that things would get better and to stick with it. "Jobs can often be overwhelming the first few days," one person wrote. "Roll with it the best you can and by next week you'll be a pro. You got this." "Some jobs aren't for everyone." "Just remember that EVERYONE there, especially the hiring manager, wants you to make it and become a superstar," another user remarked. Other users, however, said it's OK to quit. "Agree – but if you hate it in 3 weeks, give your notice and find one that works," wrote one person. "And some jobs aren't for everyone," said another commenter. "Perfectly fine if this dude wants to go find a new job." One commenter who claimed to have once worked as a Costco food court manager didn't seem surprised by the employee's story. "We'd hire three [people] at a time," the person wrote. "There was always one [who] would quit by the end of the first week." According to the BMO Real Financial Progress Index, 67% of Americans were concerned about tariffs in April, up from 59% in March. Sixty-four percent of men and 71% of women are concerned about tariffs; and 66% of Gen Z, 66% of millennials, 68% of Gen X and 69% of boomers and older Americans are concerned. 'Consumers have told us in this survey that higher tariffs and rising tariff uncertainty are rattling their confidence in their finances, the cost of living and the prospect of even higher inflation ahead,' Scott Anderson, chief U.S. economist at BMO, stated in a news release. Here's a closer look at Americans' tariff-related fears and how they can address them. Many Americans — and particularly younger Americans — are feeling less confident about their financial situation due to tariff uncertainty. More than half of Americans (59%) said they are more concerned about their overall financial situations, up 14 points over March. Gen Z and millennial respondents' concerns about their financial situations increased by 17 points over the previous month, the BMO survey found. 'As tariff tensions rise, many Americans are feeling the pressure in their wallets,' Pratik Patel, head of U.S. wealth planning for BMO U.S. Wealth Management, told GOBankingRates. 'This is especially true for younger Americans, who often have less financial cushion and are more vulnerable to income disruptions.' There are steps Americans of all ages can take to feel more financially secure, despite whatever tariffs may be in effect. 'First, reinforcing the basics is key,' Patel said. 'Build or replenish an emergency fund, revisit household budgets and pay down high-interest debt to help build a buffer against rising costs. These foundational moves not only improve financial resilience but also restore a sense of control.' Be Aware: Many Americans also fear that they will struggle to cope with the possibility of even higher living costs and a more inflationary environment than we have now. Three-quarters of Americans (75%) reported an increase in worry over the cost of living, a 12-point increase over March. These fears may not be unwarranted — but there are ways to prepare. 'Consumers should prepare for the ripple effects of inflation,' Patel said. 'Tariffs tend to lead to higher prices on imported goods, which can impact everything from groceries to electronics. Adjusting spending habits — such as prioritizing needs over wants or switching to more affordable alternatives — can help manage these shifts.' Investors should also take preemptive action, Patel said. 'For investors, this may be a good time to review portfolios and consider inflation-protected assets or sectors that tend to perform well in volatile environments,' he explained. Staying informed and working with experts is also very important. 'Financial advisors and planners can offer tailored strategies, and keeping an eye on policy developments can help consumers and business owners anticipate changes and adapt early,' Patel said. 'For younger Americans, automating savings, investing in skills and using budgeting tools can go a long way in building long-term financial confidence.' Overall, Americans should not let their tariff fears get the best of them. 'With the right strategies and support,' Patel said, 'Americans can navigate tariff-related challenges and maintain confidence in their financial future.'
