
Gateshead former sub-postmaster urges others to seek legal advice
A former sub-postmaster, whose life was "destroyed" in the Horizon computer scandal, has been offered just over half a million pounds in compensation thanks to "proper legal advice"Bob Stevenson, 81, from Gateshead, was initially offered compensation of £51,000 after losing his family home and business more than 20 years ago. He now stands to receive a settlement of more than £500,000.Mr Stevenson said all he ever wanted "was to make sure that my family was OK" and urged others affected by the scandal to seek professional help."I've said it before, and I'll say it again, if you're still involved in it, you've got to go and get proper legal advice."
Lawyers are seeking compensation for hundreds of former sub-postmasters who were caught up in the scandal, maintaining some cases have been "grossly undervalued" by the Post Office. "The benefit of doubt should be given to people that put forward credible accounts of what they've lost, rather than a forensic examination," said Mr Stevenson's lawyer, Neil Hudgell.He said almost all the cases his firm had seen had been "worryingly undervalued", with examples of compensation offers being increased from £4,400 to £133,700, or £17,700 to £253,900, after legal representations.It comes as the government is set to open a new appeals process – managed by the Department for Business and Trade - for people compensated through its Horizon Shortfall Scheme (HSS), with many sub-postmasters having concluded their cases and accepted settlements with no legal advice.
More than 900 sub-postmasters were prosecuted for stealing because of incorrect information from the Horizon computer system. Many sub-postmasters went to prison for false accounting and theft, and many were financially ruined.It has been called the UK's most widespread miscarriage of justice.Mr Stevenson had just refurbished his shop, where both his wife, Carol, and his son worked. Profits were high.But the installation of the Horizon accounting system in 1999 changed everything. "We pressed the button - £800 down, the very first week it was installed - and that was happening two or three times a month. "I used to go home after work and go in the kitchen and cry looking at the bills," he remembers."And it's in your contract: you repay the money. So you just kept repaying the money. "It was really hard. I just knew if we couldn't pay the bills - and just didn't - what was going to happen. "We lost everything."
Made bankrupt
In 2002, when Mr Stevenson could no longer plug the financial holes left by the faulty IT system, he was suspended and made bankrupt."We were in Sunderland Court for the bankruptcies - and then they just basically tell you you've got to get out," he said, describing losing his home."Horrendous is the only word to describe it. You just feel as though you're a failure." "The retirement plan was to see the world. That was the plan. "Horizon destroyed our lives."
After details of the scandal, which found the Horizon system had been incorrectly reporting losses in Post Office branches, were made public, Mr Stevenson and his family were offered compensation of £51,000.After seeking legal advice, they rejected the offer. They have since been offered more than half a million pounds. At 81, having acquired a new home, and with the final settlement impending, Mr Stevenson and his family have a chance to pick up where they left off 23 years ago."Obviously my son will get it," he says, of the financial settlement."That's why you feel such a failure - because you haven't done what I thought was my job, you know, to make sure that my family was OK. That's all I wanted."

Ballymena riots: Families flee 'locals' venting their feelings
Here we go again. It was not long after 8pm when a police announcement over a tannoy mounted on their armoured vehicles reverberated around for all to hear. "Force is about to be used against violent individuals," blasted from the speakers as locals, some masked, stood waiting for action. "You better be filming this," one man said as we captured the scenes for Sky News amid a growing sense from locals that the police were being heavy handed in their tactics. And then officers, holding their shields, surged forward as people edged back. The move seemed to further anger the residents who had gathered, almost goading them as tensions ran high. The pace of clashes was slower on this, the third night of conflict. But it was nevertheless just as ugly and messy. Eyewitness: It is hard to see where the violence will end Soon came the baton rounds, the firebombs, the water cannon. Those pelting the police seemed unfazed as they were battered with plastic bullets in return. The watching crowd cheered the rioters on. Police chiefs earlier defended their operation. A senior officer insisted he did have "a grip" on the unravelling situation when questioned by Sky News. The increased presence of officers was felt on the ground and was clear to see. The soundtrack of sirens swirled around this town once again as police lurched from incident to incident as pockets of violence flared up. Officers are on their way from Scotland, England and Wales to help bolster resources. And they won't be short of work. A leisure centre 25 minutes away in Larne came under attack on Wednesday evening after it emerged some of the foreign families fleeing the Ballymena chaos were being temporarily held there. A short drive around Ballymena's one way road system takes you on a journey through housing estates where people have flooded the streets with union jack flags and stuck yellow A4 sheets to their windows with the words, "LOCALS LIVE HERE". These colourful displays are being seen as a public noticeboard of the nationality of the occupants inside each home. A deterrent to make the angry mob to look elsewhere. And those failing to advertise whether they are a 'native' or not seem to be paying a price. I witnessed an upper floor flat with a window smashed, the guttering on fire and the ground outside ablaze. An older neighbour fled her home downstairs in her dressing gown. Earlier in the day two Romanian women were frantically examining their phones down an alleyway as their kids played on the trampoline in the garden. They were terrified and were bundling their belongings in the car and leaving for good. A sizeable chunk of people born in Ballymena are angry. They do not like the talk from police and politicians that taking to the streets following an alleged sex attack on a teenage girl equates to them being "racist thugs". They see this as an act of venting their feelings. And they are hellbent on continuing this campaign of carnage across Northern Ireland to ensure they prove their point.

Three-quarters of parents have bought their children beauty products in the last year, a survey suggests. Parents have spent £111 on average on items such as lip balms (41%), face moisturisers (39%), and cleansers (37%), according to the poll for cashback and rewards site Rakuten. Other popular items bought for children aged eight to 17 included lip gloss or lipstick (32%), body moisturiser (30%), face masks (28%), skin oil (22%), mascara (22%), makeup remover (21%) and foundation (19%). A typical adult spends £148 on beauty products a year, the study found. Of the 75% of parents who bought beauty products, 41% said they did so to boost their child's confidence, while 24% saw it as a way to bond with their children. Fathers were more willing to spend on their children's beauty regimes, buying £144 worth of items per year compared with the average £82 paid for by mothers. Bola Sol, from Rakuten, said: 'With skincare and make-up routines and trends taking over social media, it's no surprise that younger children are asking for more luxurious beauty products. 'All parents want to make their kids happy, but it's also important to balance that with your budget. A great way to do this is by tracking products for when they go on sale, and where possible, bag even more savings by using a cashback provider such as Rakuten to make the purchase through.' OnePoll surveyed 1,000 UK parents with children aged eight to 17 between May 28 and June 15.
