HC orders action against 2 judges for letting accused go undefended in court

1 2 Kolkata: Calcutta High Court's Jalpaiguri circuit bench on Wednesday directed action against two judges — the chief judicial magistrate and the district and sessions judge (NDPS), Alipurduar — for not providing an advocate from legal aid to an accused in a drug case at the time of court production. Granting bail, Justice Krishna Rao held that the arresting officer violated Article 22 (1) of the Constitution by not informing the accused of the grounds for arrest. It is a fundamental right that an accused cannot be detained in custody without being informed of this. In ordering action against the two judicial officers, the court noted that a written complaint was made after the arrest on March 28, 2024, and after the initiation of the FIR, a case diary was started. The forwarding report submitted before the NDPS court was not served to the accused. At the time of production before the court on March 29, 2024, no advocate was provided and the court granted three days of police remand. After three days, the accused was produced before the NDPS court judge on April 1, 2024. He was taken into judicial custody, but the judge did not provide any advocate from legal aid to defend him. "This order be forwarded to the registrar general of the high court for information of the hon'ble Chief Justice and necessary action against the chief judicial magistrate and district and sessions judge (NDPS), Alipurduar for not offering an advocate from legal aid to the petitioner as at the time of production, the petitioner was undefended," the judge directed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo It was noted that even though it was mentioned in the written complaint, case diary and forwarding report that the grounds for arrest were explained, the state did not disclose any document or evidence proving the same. The accused was arrested on the allegation that the police seized 40 100ml bottles of Rc-Kuff cough syrup from him on March 28, 2024. CM orders crowd control plan for Kainchi Dham fair as footfall triples in a year

Nainital: A record 2.5 to 3 lakh devotees are expected to attend 15 foundation day fair at Kainchi Dham on Sunday, prompting CM Pushkar Singh Dhami to order immediate and long-term measures for crowd and traffic management at the shrine in Nainital district. The fair marks the ashram's consecration and has grown into one of the region's largest religious gatherings. Dhami chaired a high-level meeting on Thursday to discuss a multi-tiered response to the sharp rise in footfall at the pilgrimage site. He directed officials to widen a 3km stretch from the Sanatorium to beyond the Bhowali petrol pump to ease congestion. He also called for a registration system and a visitor cap to be put in place to regulate crowd flow. Nainital DM Vandana Singh highlighted the need for long-term solutions and proposed a mandatory registration system along with a cap on visitor numbers in the future to ensure a safer and more organised pilgrimage experience. She said, "In earlier years, we saw around 8 lakh visitors annually, but 2024 saw a massive surge with 24 lakh pilgrims. We expect 2.5 to 3 lakh devotees to attend the fair and we need better infrastructure to handle this. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Hvor lenge varer 3 mill. kr etter fylte 55? "We will use drones and CCTV for round-the-clock surveillance. A control room and a social media monitoring unit are being set up to manage misinformation," he said. More than 800 police personnel and three PAC companies will be deployed across zones. Plainclothes officers, volunteers, and bomb disposal squads will assist with security and crowd control. Officials have planned traffic diversions, shuttle services, and 15 designated parking sites across key routes. SDM Tushar Saini shared two helpline numbers — 07302532213 and 05942-245543 — for public assistance. Officials urged devotees to use designated parking and follow all instructions to ensure smooth and safe proceedings. Kainchi Dham was established by Neem Karoli Baba in 1962 and has emerged as a major spiritual centre. The shrine attracts lakhs of devotees annually, including well-known visitors like Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. As Kim Soo Hyun and the late Kim Sae Ron 's case goes, many other legal actions have been taken against everyone else involved. Kim Soo Hyun seizes YouTuber's properties amid defamation case On June 11, as reported by Newssen, Kim Soo Hyun's legal representative allegedly took hold of two real estate properties that belonged to Kim Se Eui, the CEO of online streaming channel HoverLab. Earlier, Soo Hyun had filed a defamation case against the YouTuber for spreading misinformation and for defaming the actor. His name, however, has not been fully listed in the real estate seizures, as it would require his private records to be made public per legalities. To protect his personal information, his name was not included directly in the real estate seizure. The Seoul Central District Court approved Kim Soo Hyun's agency's request for a damages lawsuit and an asset seizure request. While the request was filed for 11 billion KRW, the properties seized by the company amount to 4 billion KRW.
