I'm an ex Rangers star who conned a referee to get my arch Celtic rival sent off as payback

Daily Record25-06-2025
It's one of the most infamous incidents in the history of the great Glasgow rivals
Peter Lovenkrands has revealed his old Celtic sparring partner wound him up so much - that he feigned injury to get him sent off.
Hoops legend Alan Thompson was infamously red-carded for "head-butting" his Rangers rival during a powderkeg derby at Ibrox in 2004.

The Danish winger dramatically tumbled to the deck clutching his face but TV replays showed minimal contact.

Furious Parkhead boss Martin O'Neill appealed the decision but, surprisingly, the SFA decided against overturning the ban.
Lovenkrands was hooked at half-time by Alex McLeish after being accused of falling theatrically in his face-off with Thompson - who he later worked with at Newcastle.
But speaking 20 years on from the incident, Lovenkrands revealed why he conned referee Kenny Clark during the fiery affair, which Gers won 2-0.
"Me and Alan Thompson had a big rivalry", he told Open Goal. "He was after me. He was always trying to get inside my head.
"I think it was tactical from their point of view to try and get me off my game. I'm a young boy, try to get in my head and by physical.

"He was always after me on the pitch and giving me all sorts of abuse. I got him sent off at Ibrox, that famous thing when I went down and got him off.
"It was literally just because me and him and this rivalry and it was my chance to get him back. That was the only reason why I did it.
"It was just, I need to get him off here because it's the only way I'm going to get him back. There were rivalries all over the pitch."

Celtic to 'bank' Ben Doak windfall from £25m transfer

The Premier League club are preparing to finalise a £25 million deal with Liverpool for the 19-year-old Scotland international. Doak, who joined Liverpool from Celtic in 2022 for £600,000, has been allowed to leave Anfield after making just ten appearances in three years. According to reports, Liverpool will receive £20 million up front, with an additional £5 million paid in add-ons by Bournemouth. The Scottish Sun claims that Celtic will receive a seven-figure sum from Liverpool due to a sell-on clause included in the original deal to sell Doak. Doak will sign a five-year contract with Bournemouth, running until the summer of 2030. After spending last season on loan with Middlesbrough, he now hopes to continue his development at the highest level.

However, the ex-Light Blues and Scotland defender has come under fire from Rangers fans for abysmal domestic performances. Four points have already been dropped in the Premiership as well as a far from convincing Premier Sports Cup win over part-time League One outfit Alloa Athletic. Elements of social media flak, especially, has been brutal on Martin - with his mother Kerry fearing for him. But the former MK Dons, Swansea City and Southampton boss has been quick to allay her worries and those of other family members and friends. Martin - just seven games in charge - said: 'I have a lot of people message me who read message boards and stuff who are concerned about me. 'And they just don't have to be. 'So I keep telling my mum 'Don't worry about it, it's all good. I'm enjoying it.' 'I appreciate the honour of managing this club every day and the gratitude I feel for that. 'So let's have that in the building. Rangers Tribute Pub Vandalised in Violent Attack: Community Stands Strong 'I said to the staff as well, so many of them support the club - but I think they've lost a bit of joy of being here and working here. 'Let's understand how big this is and how brilliant it could be and focus on what we can control. 'And that is playing with so much energy tomorrow and really feeding off it.' Martin already knew the size of Rangers - and his Euro nights at Ibrox have been everything and more for him in terms of excitement and atmosphere. Each time he led the side to big qualifying wins over Panathinaikos and Viktoria Pilzen which set them up for progression away from home. Now it's the biggest test yet for his team which is still in flux, with new signings - left-back loan capture Jayden Meghoma from Brentford is expected to be in the squad - still finding their feet. But Martin doesn't want apprehension or trepidation within the dressing room confines - only exhilaration and a desire to grasp a wonderful opportunity. He said: 'We've been here just under two months now, seven weeks, wherever it's been, and I'm more excited than ever really. 'I think you have to roll with the punches here for sure, and I think early on we understand we were going to have a bit of pain to go through. 'We have to win while we're going through some pain. "So we're into this round which is a huge opportunity to qualify for one of the best competitions in world football. 'I really believe we can do it. 'When you come to this club, you have a chance to have experiences and moments you just don't get at any other football club. 'And tomorrow night can be another night like that. We're realistic. We have to improve in so many areas. 'But let's look at the opportunities that are ahead of us and what we can go and achieve and what it could look like in a month's time, in a week's time.' 5 Meghoma has joined the Gers on loan Credit: Alamy Martin said of new signing Meghoma: 'I think he's going to be registered in time for tomorrow's match. He trained yesterday.' Striker Cyriel Dessers is fighting a desperate battle to shake off a leg injury and Martin said: 'Big Cyriel is probably the only concern. 'If it's not tomorrow, we expect him to be back for the weekend and next week.' 5 Nico Raskin watching from the sidelines Credit: SNS Martin, meanwhile, insisted much talked about midfielder Nico Raskin is back in his plans after not featuring in the weekend squad. He also shot down rumours of the Belgian making a transfer request. The Gers boss said: 'The only reason he wasn't in the squad on Saturday was for a rest. 'He is going to be really important for us. He will play tomorrow night.' On the want-away whispers, Martin added: 'No, I've not heard anything. 'Not at all. He's been brilliant. 'I'm pretty sure Kevin and Patrick would have told me.' Schmeichel in no hurry for contract talks but loving every day at Celtic

Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel says he is in no hurry to talk with the club about a new contract at Parkhead because his focus in on enjoying football and dealing with the challenges ahead. The Danish keeper arrived in Glasgow as Joe Hart's successor a year ago and enjoyed a successful first season with Premiership and Premier Sports Cup success, as well as a run to the knockout stage of the Champions League. He signed a one-year contract extension in January that takes him through until next summer, with no certainty about what the future holds beyond that. Speaking to STV ahead of his side's Champions League play-off against Kairat Almaty, that will decide whether Celtic get another crack at the League Phase fo the elite competition, he said his own situation was far from a priority. 'No, that's just not how how we operate right now,' he said. 'There's a massive game and all focus is on that. 'I can't imagine that's important to them or to me, at the moment. 'I've got a contract and it is what it is at the moment. We'll take that at some point.' Schmeichel will turn 39 this season, playing well beyond the age that most professionals reach, and just over a year away from what would be a real landmark. He says he's not contemplating either retirement or a definite push towards football at 40. Instead, he takes the view that he should enjoy every day doing a job he loves. 'The way I've looked at it, football is very, very unpredictable,' he said. 'You take nothing for granted. You know, one big injury could finish your career at any point of your life. 'So you take each and every day on its merit. Each game on its merit. And you enjoy every single one of them.' He added: 'For me, I don't think in limitations. I don't think 'I need to get to there' or 'I need to get to here'. 'Every single day it's 'How can we get better? How can I get better? What can I do to to improve not just myself but the people around me? Are we giving enough?' All those kind of things, that's that's how I measure it.' After a sunny day preparing for another European night under the lights at Celtic Park, the veteran international reflected on seeing his dad Peter end a long and decorated career and said it made him appreciate just playing for as long as he can. 'I know if that passion and that love and desire one day starts to starts to wither, then that might be the time to to finish, but I can't see that happening anytime soon. 'But you know I'm just enjoying every single minute of playing. 'I'm very lucky in the sense that I've had a father who's gone through that process. 'I've seen it close up first hand so I haven't gone through, but I feel like I've gone through it. 'So for me, I'm in an incredible position to just enjoy it and there's a long, long, long life after football, hopefully. 'There's a long life after football, so while you're a footballer, I don't think you're ever gonna find a better job in the world. 'It's just about enjoying it, you know. You've seen today, a sunny day with the pitch watered and the Champions League balls out, diving around. 'I mean it's never gonna get better than that.'
