Johor govt to give track cyclist Shah Firdaus all the support he needs to reach the top
Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said this includes providing a special allocation to make sure the Muar-born cyclist receives world-class training.
"The state government will, insyaAllah, provide an appropriate allocation to make sure he gets the best, including in terms of development and training.
"We also pray that he will be the first Malaysian to win an Olympic gold medal," Onn Hafiz said in his speech at the launch of the MADANI Rakyat Programme that was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Toppen Shopping Centre here today.
Also present were Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, the lead minister of the programme; Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and other state government leaders.
Meanwhile, Onn Hafiz said Shah Firdaus is expected to be named as the state's latest Sports Icon, joining an elite group of athletes that includes the likes of national badminton legend Datuk Lee Chong Wei, All Blacks rugby legend Sonny B Williams and former English Premier League footballer Tim Cahill of Everton.
In the 2024 Paris Olympics, Shah Firdaus was the only national rider to qualify for the final in the keirin event, where he finished sixth, and he also won a keirin silver in the Asian Track Cycling Championships in Jakarta in 2019.

Olympics-LA28 to allow venue naming rights in first for Olympics; Comcast, Honda debut deals
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games will, for the first time in Games history, allow venue naming rights, organizers said on Thursday, unveiling Comcast and Honda as inaugural partners in a move aimed at boosting commercial revenues. The pilot program, developed with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), will let qualifying LA28 partners retain existing venue names during the Games and buy additional marketing assets. It also opens naming rights for up to 19 temporary venues to worldwide Olympic partners and LA28 sponsors, while standard "clean venue" rules continue for non-partner sites. Comcast will lend its name to the Comcast Squash Center at Universal Studios, where squash will make its Olympic debut on the Courthouse Square backlot. Honda Center in Anaheim will become the first arena to keep its name during an Olympic competition, hosting indoor volleyball. "Anytime you're the first to do something in the context of the Olympics, it's a big deal," LA28 chair Casey Wasserman told Reuters. "It's a big opportunity for us and it's a big statement of support from the IOC. We think it will be a really powerful platform and opportunity in the commercial sector, so we're really excited." Wasserman said the deals introduce a "new commercial model" for the Olympic movement. The IOC traditionally enforces strict branding rules during the Games, masking corporate signage at competition venues. He noted money from selling venue naming rights would be in addition to the overall sponsorship revenue target of $2.5 billion, which LA28 calls the largest commercial revenue raise in sports. "We've been very conservative, so we have none of this revenue in our budget so any revenue is upside," he said. "Having said that, we think it could be significant. It's a really powerful platform for branded partners of ours to engage with us and also with the globe, because it's part of the broadcast. The reach is really stunning." From a practical perspective, the potential for SoFi Stadium and arena to maintain their names during the Games will help fans navigating the city. Li Peng: Pearly-Thinaah are redefining excitement in women's doubles

PETALING JAYA: Former shuttler Ang Li Peng knows what it takes to stand atop the podium and the senior is thrilled to see Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah climbing that same path to glory. Li Peng etched her name in history alongside Lim Pek Siah when they became the first Malaysian women's doubles pair to strike gold at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. The pair's victory was an important breakthrough and Malaysia then went on to win four women's doubles titles in the next five editions through Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty (2006), Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei (2014), Vivian-Chow Mei Kuan (2018) and Pearly- Thinaah (2022). Since then, Pearly- Thinaah have risen to become one of the most exciting pairs in the world, hitting a career-high No. 2 in the world rankings last month. "It's amazing to see each generation producing standout players. As senior athletes, we are happy to see the players evolving," said Li Peng, who is a lawyer now. "Pearly- Thinaah have a dynamic style of play. They redefine excitement for today's generation. "In my opinion, they are an all-rounded pair – strong in attack, solid in defense and capable of producing thrilling rallies." After seeing Pearly-Thinaah enjoy a fine year so far, Li Peng has backed the pair to end Malaysia's wait for a medal in the women's doubles in the World Championships from Aug 25-31 in Paris. "Pearly-Thinaah have always been one of the most consistent pairs we ever had. Given their current form, they are at their peak and their chances of winning a medal is very high," said Li Peng. "They have consistently reached semi-finals and finals in their past few tournaments and this doesn't just require skills and good strategies but mental strength as well." Pearly-Thinaah have reached at least the semi-finals in five out of their past six tournaments. Overall this year, the duo have captured the Thailand Open and finished runners-up in the Japan Open, Indonesian Open and Masters. Li Peng also believes that returning to the same venue as the Paris Olympics - the Adidas Arena in Port de la Chapelle - will give Pearly-Thinaah huge motivation in the world meet. In the Olympics last August, the pair created history by becoming the first Malaysians to reach the last four of the women's doubles in the showpiece event. "Psychologically, it will help to play in Paris again after the Olympics. They are familiar with the stadium," said Li Peng. "The moment they step into the stadium, their spirits will be lifted and they will be highly motivated." Pearly-Thinaah have received a bye in the first round and will likely play Hong Kong's Lui Lok Lok-Tsang Hiu Yan in the second round. Meanwhile, Malaysia will also be represented in the women's doubles by world No. 18 Teoh Mei Xing-Go Pei Kee. The pair, who have improved steadily since combining last year, have also been given a bye in the first round and could face world No. 19 Bulgarian sisters Gabriela Stoeva-Stefani Stoeva for a place in the third round.
