More Malaysians use smart tools to buy smarter

Malaysia is leading the region in AI-powered retail adoption, with 58 percent of consumers now using artificial intelligence (AI) tools to enhance their shopping experiences - far ahead of the global average of 37 percent.
This is according to the Adyen Retail Report 2025, which surveyed over 41,000 consumers and 14,000 merchants across 28 markets.
The findings underscore Malaysia's rapid shift towards intelligent, digital-first retail experiences, where AI tools are helping shoppers make quicker, smarter, and more personalised decisions - from finding outfit ideas to discovering new brands online.
'Malaysia is entering an era where AI acts like a personal stylist or shopping assistant,' said Lee Soon Yean, Country Manager, Malaysia at Adyen, a global financial technology platform for businesses. 'We're seeing a move beyond digital convenience to digital intelligence.'
AI-powered retail takes off
AI's influence on Malaysian retail is wide-ranging. Among local consumers surveyed,
71 percent said AI sparks ideas for meals, outfits, and purchases faster than anyone else,
69 percent credited AI for introducing them to new brands, and
60 percent are open to making purchases directly through AI interfaces in future.
AI adoption is highest among Gen Z (74 percent) and Millennials (65 percent), though older consumers are catching up. Notably, 25 percent of Baby Boomers now report using AI to support purchases - a number that continues to grow.
On the business side, Malaysian retailers are actively investing to keep up.
46 percent plan to deploy AI for marketing and sales,
43 percent for product innovation, and
another 46 percent to strengthen fraud prevention systems.
To support this shift, Adyen recently launched Adyen Uplift, an AI-powered payments optimisation suite that helps businesses detect genuine shoppers, reduce fraud, and improve payment success rates - all using end-to-end payments data across the entire customer journey.
The rise of social commerce
The retail revolution in Malaysia isn't happening on e-commerce websites alone - it's happening on social media.
According to the report, 57 percent of Malaysians shop directly on social platforms, averaging six purchases per month. This includes even Baby Boomers, with 18 percent saying they buy on social media five times a month - slightly more than Gen Z shoppers at 14 percent.
Influencer culture and peer recommendations are strong motivators:
52 percent are more likely to buy if a product is recommended by a friend or influencer,
45 percent are swayed by trending products, and
41 percent trust influencer endorsements more than traditional ads.
Retailers are responding. 34 percent of Malaysian businesses plan to invest in social commerce this year - the highest rate across Asia-Pacific. The aim: transform social media from a marketing channel into a fully transactional platform, complete with integrated payments, consistent pricing, and real-time inventory, opined Lee (above).
With social media emerging as a key shopping channel, the report underscores the importance of meeting consumers where they scroll - and making the path from discovery to checkout as seamless as possible.
Online, offline and everything in between
Today's Malaysian shopper is not choosing between online and offline - they expect both to work together, smoothly.
The report shows:
72 percent of consumers want to move easily between social media, apps, and websites while shopping,
43 percent want promotions tailored to their preferences, and
39 percent would like easier returns and exchanges between channels.
Despite the rise of digital, brick-and-mortar retail remains relevant.
57 percent of shoppers want to see and feel products before purchasing,
53 percent enjoy the instant gratification of taking items home immediately.
To support these hybrid journeys, 52 percent of Malaysian businesses now offer unified commerce - allowing consumers to, for example, buy online and return in-store, or purchase in-store and ship to home. Another 26 percent plan to introduce this capability in the next year.
Checkout remains a critical moment in the shopper's journey:
56 percent of Malaysians will abandon a purchase if the payment process is too slow,
54 percent will leave if their preferred payment method is not offered.
Retailers are adapting by:
Rolling out one-click purchases and queue-busting tools (58 percent),
Enhancing payment speed (53 percent), and
Equipping staff with mobile POS and Tap-to-Pay options (31 percent).
In terms of payment preferences, digital wallets and online banking now rival credit and debit cards, with Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) also seeing growing adoption – 45 percent of businesses already offer BNPL, and the same number plan to expand it.
As the report notes, retailers that can connect every touchpoint - online, offline, and social - will be best positioned to deliver the seamless, personalised experiences shoppers now expect.
Fraud and trust
As online shopping rises, so does concern over fraud. The report reveals:
41 percent of Malaysians experienced some form of payment fraud in the past year - a 16 percent increase from 2024.
Younger shoppers are more affected: 65 percent of Gen Z and 61 percent of Millennials have faced fraud, compared to 46 percent of Baby Boomers.
Fraud types reported include:
Credit card scams (16 percent)
Social engineering attacks (14 percent)
Identity theft (12 percent)
Account takeovers (10 percent)
Retailers too are feeling the pressure, reporting average losses of RM6.29 million due to fraud in the past year. Chargebacks alone account for 18 percent of these losses.
Yet, shoppers want fraud protection without hassle. Only 24 percent say they appreciate identity checks - and only if they do not slow things down.
As a result, 46 percent of Malaysian retailers plan to invest in AI-driven fraud prevention tools. Smart platforms like Adyen's help detect anomalies and confirm genuine users in real time, keeping the process smooth for customers while improving security behind the scenes.
With retail channels expanding and new ones emerging, success now hinges on connection - not just with customers, but across every touchpoint. With the right tech stack and a unified view of shopper behaviour, businesses can adapt in real time, personalise smarter, and deliver experiences that feel effortless.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has not granted any exclusive rights to the United States concerning rare earth elements (REE) and the US has not made such a request, says Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz ( pic ). The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister said that the US only requested not to be excluded from any arrangements Malaysia offers to other countries. 'It's simply not true that we gave the US any exclusive access. What they requested was to be treated on equal footing and not to be excluded from what we offer others,' he said. Tengku Zafrul said this in response to a query by Datuk Ku Abdul Rahman Ku Ismail (Perikatan–Kubang Pasu) in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (August 7). He also outlined Malaysia's broader strategy in dealing with its trade relations, which includes expanding access to new markets, strengthening competitiveness in key sectors, and addressing structural challenges across industries. Trade between Malaysia and the US currently accounts for about 15% of Malaysia's total global trade, he added. Meanwhile, Tengku Zafrul noted that the furniture and rubber glove industries face distinct challenges, including tariff concerns and non-tariff issues such as labour and compliance. In the furniture sector, he said two main issues are being addressed. The first is transhipment, where allegations have emerged that furniture made in China is being assembled in Malaysia and falsely labelled as 'Made in Malaysia'. 'To address this, the ministry has now taken over the issuance of certificates of origin. New guidelines are in place to ensure compliance, and this move is expected to enhance the competitiveness of our local furniture exporters,' he said. The second issue relates to tariffs. While Malaysia's main competitors—Vietnam and China—face similar tariff rates in certain export markets, Malaysian furniture exporters now see more certainty in their trade outlook. 'When we engaged with furniture industry players, they expressed that they are less worried about tariffs now. Their concerns are more about skilled labour, foreign worker policies, and other operational challenges. This is where the government's support is crucial,' Tengku Zafrul added. As for the rubber glove sector, he noted that the industry has faced pressure even before tariff measures were implemented. 'This industry has long faced stiff competition from China, Thailand, and Vietnam. So while tariffs do have an impact, the bigger issues are productivity and competitiveness,' he said. Tengku Zafrul said he has met with industry players to understand their concerns and reiterated the ministry's commitment to supporting Malaysian exporters through targeted strategies and engagement with international partners.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's semiconductor exports to the United States remain exempt from retaliatory tariffs for now, says Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister said the exemption remains in place at present, but it is subject to review and may be affected by future shifts in US trade policy. 'Currently, Malaysia's semiconductor exports to the US are not subjected to the retaliatory tariffs. However, this exemption is conditional and may change depending on the US government's evolving policies,' Tengku Zafrul told the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Aug 7). He was responding to Lim Guan Eng (PH–Bagan), who asked about reports that US president Donald Trump had announced plans to impose 100% tariffs on semiconductors imported from countries that do not produce — or do not plan to produce — chips within the US and only companies that have invested in or are building chip-manufacturing facilities in the US would reportedly be exempt. 'This is a significant move that will undoubtedly affect major semiconductor-exporting countries like Malaysia,' Tengku Zafrul said. He said that in April, the US Department of Commerce launched an investigation under Section 232 of its Trade Expansion Act to determine whether imports of semiconductors, chip-making equipment and related products pose a threat to US national security. 'Although the report was initially expected by the end of December, we've learnt that the timeline has been expedited. 'Preliminary findings from this investigation may soon form the basis for future policy decisions — including the possibility of higher tariffs,' he said Tengku Zafrul stressed that the US government has yet to officially announce the mechanism for implementing the tariffs. 'Based on current information, the exemptions may not be based on countries, but on companies that invest directly in the US, regardless of where they are headquartered,' he said. As such, the impact on Malaysia would depend largely on the structure and investment strategies of multinational firms operating locally. Tengku Zafrul said Malaysia's electrical and electronics (E&E) exports to the US totalled RM119bil in 2024 — roughly 20% of the country's total E&E exports. Of that, semiconductors alone made up RM60.6bil, or about 20% of Malaysia's total semiconductor exports. He noted that 68% of Malaysia's semiconductor exports to the US came from American companies based in Malaysia. 'These companies employ around 72,000 skilled Malaysian workers and are supported by approximately 7,200 local suppliers, most of which are SMEs,' he said. He said the government is also ramping up outreach and engagement with key local exporters and players in the semiconductor supply chain, while encouraging companies to expand to alternative markets. 'Ultimately, we are committed to monitoring this development closely and negotiating proactively. 'We want a clear understanding of what the US defines as 'semiconductors' in this context, so our industry can prepare appropriately,' he said.

Airbnb injects RM9.2bil into Malaysian economy in 2024, driving RM2.1bil in wages

KUALA LUMPUR: Airbnb generated RM9.2 billion in economic impact for Malaysia in 2024, accounting for 5 per cent of the tourism sector's contribution to the nation's gross domestic product (GDP), according to a new report released by Oxford Economics. The report, The Economic Impact of Airbnb in Malaysia (May 2025), highlights the expanding footprint of the short-term rental platform, which supported about 93,600 jobs nationwide and contributed RM2.1 billion in total wage income. "Malaysia's tourism recovery reflects a strong and resilient demand for domestic travel. Malaysian travellers are instrumental in driving the resurgence in the tourism sector. At the same time, traditional international markets, especially those within the APAC region, remain important sources of inbound tourists, reinforcing Malaysia's appeal as an attractive travel destination in the region," said James Lambert, director of economic consulting Asia for Oxford Economics. Domestic guests accounted for 67 per cent of Airbnb stays in Malaysia in 2024, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and reflecting a rebound in local travel appetite. Meanwhile, international travellers made up 33 per cent of Airbnb's guest base – more than double their share in 2022. The majority of these guests came from within Asia Pacific, underlining Malaysia's strengthened positioning in the global tourism map. Airbnb guests spent a total of RM11 billion in Malaysia last year, encompassing accommodation and on-the-ground expenditures such as dining, retail, and transport. On average, guests stayed two nights and spent RM640 per day on non-accommodation essentials. For every RM1,000 spent, RM290 went to restaurants and shopping, RM160 to arts and entertainment, and RM110 and RM140 to groceries and transport, respectively. Airbnb's economic ripple extended well beyond traditional tourism sectors. In 2024, the platform's activity directly supported RM1.4 billion in manufacturing output, RM1.2 billion in both transport & storage and food & beverage services, and over RM1 billion in wholesale and retail trade. In terms of employment, Airbnb tourism sustained 37,200 jobs in food and beverage, 13,400 in wholesale and retail, 10,300 in transport and storage, and 9,700 in arts and entertainment. These roles translated into tangible wage benefits, with Airbnb activity contributing around RM376 million in food and beverage wages, RM332 million in manufacturing wages, and RM281 million in transport and storage sector wages, highlighting a broad and meaningful economic uplift across communities. Meanwhile, travel in Malaysia showed that it was moving beyond the big cities. In 2024, over half of all Airbnb guest spending took place outside Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. There was also a 68 per cent increase in non-urban accommodation spending compared to 2019, signalling growing interest in exploring lesser-known parts of the country. Notably, areas outside Kuala Lumpur and Selangor accounted for 62 per cent of Airbnb's total GDP contribution in Malaysia, helping support 63,500 jobs and RM1.3 billion in wages, delivering meaningful economic impact to local communities across the country.
