ATRC spotlights initiatives to prepare UAE youth for tech-driven future

SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)With the rapid, tech-driven transformation reshaping the world, skills development must keep pace to ensure that 50 years from now, there is a sufficiently skilled talent pool to drive progress. This is central to the Advanced Technology Research Council's (ATRC) mission to prepare the Emirati youth for the future.The ATRC is among those participating in the 16th edition of the EmiratesSkills National Competition (ESNC), which runs until April 30 at ADNEC Centre in Abu Dhabi.Held under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Mother of the Nation, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, the ESNC is considered the UAE's largest national platform dedicated to technical and vocational skills.Organised by the Abu Dhabi Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (ACTVET), the competition showcases the best emerging Emirati talent across a wide range of disciplines.On the sidelines of the event, the ATRC's Director of R&D Talent Enablement, Dr. Ing. Mae AlMansoori, highlighted how the council prepares and enables the UAE youth to excel in advanced technologies and shape their own future in these industries."Technology is forever evolving. While we focus on fields like AI, robotics, and engineering, it's equally important to equip the youth with an adaptive mindset - to be flexible and stay updated with changing trends," Dr. AlMansoori told Aletihad.The organisation taps international experts to conduct applied research as it builds a robust talent pipeline that will meet the needs of emerging fields for the next 50 years, she said."Our long-term vision is aligned with the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030. As we transform into a knowledge-based economy, the ATRC is playing a key role through subsidiaries like the Technology Innovation Institute, where we focus on 10 advanced technology areas, including AI, secure systems, quantum technologies, cryptography, and advanced materials," Dr. AlMansoori said.In ATRC's mission to future-proof the youth and their skills, competitions such as EmiratesSkills play a crucial role, especially in inspiring young talents to pursue STEM, AlMansoori said."Competitions like EmiratesSkills give the youth some hands-on experience. They not only learn the theory but also apply it, compete, succeed, and inspire their peers to become leaders. This year's theme focuses on AI, playing a vital role in bridging education with industry and transforming students into inventors, not just learners," she said.At their stand, ATRC is showcasing an early-engagement advanced technology initiative for elementary students; specialised support and scholarships for top young talents; as well as a drive to integrate these achievers into the R&D ecosystem."We also have the Future-Focused Career Pathways initiative to build awareness about emerging careers, and platforms like the UAE Research Map to bring together researchers and experts under one network, offering mentorship, funding, and collaboration opportunities," she added.The UAE Research Map, she stressed, allows researchers to access mentorship, project funding, and collaborative opportunities.Highlighting the unique environment at its subsidiary, the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), Dr. AlMansoori said: "We have over 1,300 researchers and engineers from more than 80 countries working on breakthrough technologies. Through our scholarships, students can pursue niche fields like photonics, high-power electromagnetics, advanced materials, and AI. We also offer mentorship, internships, and access to some of the most advanced research labs in the region."At ATRC, skills development knows no age boundaries. Opportunities could be offered to children as young as seven up to adults who are already in advanced careers, Dr. AlMansoori said.
"We are a young entity - only five years old - but we are deeply committed to empowering youth in the advanced technology fields. We believe in the vision of a knowledge-based economy, and we are determined to be part of it, to create it, and to pioneer it through our youth. The power always lies in our youth, and many exciting initiatives will be launched soon," she said.

Strengthening scientific infrastructure and global trust These initiatives underscore EMI's commitment to creating a world-class scientific framework that builds trust in the UAE's markets and enhances its reputation as a global center for precision standards. Through this infrastructure, the country fosters fair, secure, and standards-based commercial environments that attract investment and support national development. Developing Emirati talent and global partnerships Since its establishment in 2011, EMI has played a foundational role in cultivating a national ecosystem of metrology experts. The institute has attracted international experience while focusing on building Emirati talent through advanced training and knowledge partnerships. This has led to the emergence of a skilled generation of Emiratis capable of managing and advancing national laboratories in accordance with global standards. UAE educators urge school-university alignment after new study abroad rules
Academicians in the UAE are calling for greater school-university collaboration as UAE recently updated its study abroad rules. Earlier this month, the country approved certain criteria for Emirati students pursuing higher education in universities abroad. Along with enhancing career-readiness, the decision aims to regulate international scholarship options in accordance with UAE's aspirations. Educators stressed that that this move will additionally raise employability and leadership readiness. 'These criteria will encourage enrollment in high-quality institutions, ensuring students receive globally competitive education. This will also help enhance aspirations and academic standards in local schooling systems as students prepare for more selective and better universities,' Prof Rajesh Mohnot, head of Finance Department at College of Business Administration, Ajman University, said. He added, 'It will raise employability and leadership readiness by aligning education with global benchmarks in teaching, research, and innovation. This initiative will promote wise public investment, ensuring that government-sponsored scholarships are directed toward impactful educational outcomes.' Personalised academic and career advising Experts suggest schools and varsities must both work on curriculum enrichment emphasising rigorous academic content, international certifications, and exposure to research and innovation practices. 'In doing so, they can pay more attention to the most relevant spheres like STEM, AI, sustainability, and other forward-looking domains, aligning with global trends. I think the university-school partnerships can foster early career awareness, college readiness, and mentorship proving to be a game changer. Moreover, there will be dedicated efforts on inclusion of critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills in the learning outcomes using standardised test preparation (SAT, IELTS, etc.) as part of mainstream offerings,' added Mohnot. Educators further highlighted there will be an increased need for personalised academic and career advising, focusing on university selection, application strategies, and scholarship opportunities. A stronger data-driven advisory model will be necessary to track global rankings, subject-wise excellence, and admission trends. "These elevated standards encourage students to strengthen their foundational knowledge, develop critical thinking skills, and engage in more rigorous learning experiences. All these attributes are essential for success at top-ranked international universities. Also, universities should offer targeted bridge programs, research opportunities, and mentorship that expose students early to the demands of world-class academic environments,' said Dr Adam Fenech, provost at Canadian University Dubai. By elevating academic standards, the UAE aims to cultivate a highly skilled and knowledgeable workforce capable of driving innovation and sustaining economic growth. 'This approach is consistent with the National Strategy for Higher Education 2030, which emphasises the importance of providing students with the technical and practical skills necessary to thrive in both public and private sectors, thereby supporting the development of a knowledge-based economy. Moreover, the UAE Vision 2021 underscores the goal of harnessing the full potential of national human capital by maximizing Emirati participation in the labour market and nurturing home-grown leaders,' added Fenech. New fast-track licensing and accreditation process Meanwhile, the UAE's new fast-track licensing and accreditation process that was announced in April is helping varsities maintain high academic standards. This major change is expediting the roll-out of new educational programmes, allowing universities to respond more quickly to the evolving needs of the market. 'The framework now focuses on evidence-based KPIs, including graduate employability, research output, and industry collaboration. This outcome-centric approach aligns higher education more closely with the UAE's national development goals and global competitiveness agenda. It also gives universities greater autonomy in making academic and operational decisions, while holding them accountable for student success, innovation, and impact,' said Dr Anita Patankar, executive director at Symbiosis Dubai. Educators noted that the change is significantly reducing administrative workload, allowing universities to focus on strategic improvements. 'The new process marks a paradigm shift from complex, time-consuming approvals to a streamlined and predictable framework. For universities like GMU, this has simplified documentation, enabled us to plan more efficiently, align programs with strategic timelines, and respond faster to emerging industry demands; ultimately allowing better budget forecasting and resource management,' Prof. Manda Venkatramana, Acting Chancellor, Gulf Medical University, Professor and Consultant Surgeon, Thumbay Hospital said.

'We're not just building a facility—we're helping shape the future of competitive shooting in the UAE,' said Stuart Gibb, Group General Manager - Sports at JA Resorts & Hotels. 'From training future athletes to offering unforgettable experiences for guests, it's about creating something that supports both high performance and broader public engagement.' The shooting range will feature 25m and 50m pistol ranges, as well as a 200m multifunctional trap and rifle range. Its fully indoor, climate-controlled setup allows athletes and guests to train comfortably and consistently throughout the year – particularly valuable in preparation for high-level international events where precision and repetition are key. Construction on the wider JA Sports & Shooting Club is already underway, with the multi-sport complex scheduled to open in phases from the end of summer 2025. In addition to the shooting facility, the development will include six elite football pitches as well as a international-standard cricket ovals with a dedicated training nets. The result is a seamless, all-encompassing experience – where an aspiring athlete can start the day on the range, unwind on a pristine private beach, and recover in a state-of-the-art wellness facility, all within the same destination. 'Sporting infrastructure doesn't just serve current athletes; it inspires the next generation,' Gibb added. 'We're creating a place where people can visualise themselves reaching the very top. That kind of belief is powerful – and it starts with access.' The project also supports broader national strategies such as the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033, which places strong emphasis on public wellbeing through inclusive, active lifestyles. While final opening dates and programme details will be announced in due course, the message is clear: the UAE is raising the bar for what sport and recreation can look like.
