Isak odds: Where will the Newcastle striker be next season?

Metro22-07-2025
Leaving goals in Newcastle when your star striker is needed to gain sharpness by playing in a pre-season friendly at Celtic was a baffling decision by Magpies manager Eddie Howe.
It is understandable he didn't want Alexander Isak to be the centre of post-match speculation if he had played in the defeat to the Scottish champions at Parkhead but the move has raised red flags in a city which bleeds black and white as it has renewed speculation he could be sold.
Liverpool have been linked, Saudi Arabia has been mentioned and Arsenal are lurking in the shadows as they are still trying to sign the striker needed to transform them from perennial Premier League runners-up into a side capable of winning the title for the first time in more than two decades.
And who would really be shocked if Chelsea conjured up the finances to secure the Sweden international's services over a lengthy period ranging from between six to eight years?
Bayern Munich could also be interested along with Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain as the Tyneside terror is one of the best finishers on the planet, having scored 54 Premier League goals in three years at the St James' Park club.
Despite agreeing to sign Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike for £69million, the Reds are in need of more firepower if they are to retain the title following the tragic passing of Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz's desire to move on and Arne Slot's willingness to allow Darwin Nunez to join another club.
The trouble for all potential purchasers is Newcastle need back up for Isak rather than scurrying around trying to find a replacement. They have failed in attempts to sign Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, who have both joined Manchester United and missed out on Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, who have swelled Chelsea's ranks.
Missing those targets mean Newcastle are highly unlikely to allow the jewel in their crown to depart, which would leave them desperately short of goals ahead of a new season which sees them back in the Champions League.
Newcastle have insisted Isak is not for sale and even if they were forced to let him go because his head has been turned they would regard £150m as the bare minimum for an elite scorer who supplied 23 goals and six assists in the top-flight last term, while also bagging the decisive strike in the 2-1 Carabao Cup final success over Liverpool at Wembley.
If Isak were to leave then the 4/1 with BetMGM and Unibet he heads to Anfield is a decent price but big-hitters should smash into the 1/3 with bet365 that he's still a Newcastle player when the transfer window closes. The Magpies simply cannot allow a rival club to steal him from their grasp.
Johnny Rotten appears at the Rebellion Festival in Blackpool next month but the Sex Pistols singer will struggle to match the same filth and fury seen in the explosive ruckus between Gerwyn Price and Daryl Gurney in their heated World Matchplay encounter in the Winter Gardens on Monday.
The darts duo are not the best of friends – security had to separate them after a Premier League match in Sheffield six years ago – and were involved in a heated exchange after Price's 10-7 first-round triumph when 'Super Chin' appeared to mock the Iceman's energetic victory celebrations, having earlier mouthed an apparent obscenity as he headed for a break in play. Price faces Chris Dobey in the second round and is 10/11 with William Hill, bet365, Betway Betfred and BoyleSports to win by over 2.5 legs while new kid on the block Josh Rock can take the scalp of three-time World Matchplay champion Michael van Gerwen at 8/13 with Hills.
The eagerly awaited rematch between Jan Brueghel and Calandagan takes place at Ascot on Saturday in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the former horse, trained by Aidan O'Brien, can repeat his half-length victory when winning the Coronation Cup at Epsom at the start of June at 2/1 with William Hill.

Rangers see off wasteful Panathinaikos to progress in Champions League

Djeidi Gassama turned super-sub once again with a crucial goal as Rangers beat profligate Panathinaikos 3-1 on aggregate in their Champions League second qualifier in Athens. Leading 2-0 from the first leg at Ibrox, only another fine performance in the Olympic stadium from Gers keeper Jack Butland, who thwarted the Greek side in Govan, kept the tie goalless at the break. Filip Djuricic opened the scoring with a header in the 53rd minute but moments after climbing off the bench, Gassama, who scored after coming off the bench on his debut last week, levelled at 1-1 with a stunning drive. A remarkable start to the 21-year-old's Rangers career took the heat out the home side's fightback, although Russell Martin should not be fooled, his side rode their luck for the second time against Panathinaikos, who will rue a series of missed opportunities over the two games. In what was Martin's first away game as Rangers boss and only his second in Europe as a manager. He kept the same side which started last week at Ibrox. Rui Vitoria's side were without suspended right-back Georgios Vagiannidis, sent off in Glasgow for picking up two yellow cards, and his place was taken by Giannis Kotsiras. The home side bossed and battered Rangers in the first half, starting in the fifth minute when midfielder Anastasios Bakasetas drove just wide from the edge of the box following another corner. In the 14th minute, Gers' dithering defender Max Aarons was robbed by former Manchester United man Facundo Pellistri, which left the attacker one-on-one with Butland and the Gers keeper brilliantly blocked the shot. Butland then made another terrific save from a close-range header by captain Fotis Ioannidis, who had beaten defender John Souttar to a great cross from Pellistri. Panathinaikos defender Erik Palmer-Brown headed a Bakasetas free-kick over the bar from six yards before the unmarked Pellistri missed a sitter in the 28th minute, blasting high over from 12 yards after Gers skipper James Tavernier had conceded possession inside the box. Rangers' two real efforts came in rare attacks, attacker Findlay Curtis missing the target and midfielder Nico Raskin heading over, both from corners. Waves of Panathinaikos pressure continued after the break but when Duricic wrong-footed Butland with a header from a Bakasetas cross, the flag went up for offside. However, after a long VAR check, Italian referee Simone Sozza awarded the goal but more drama quickly ensued. Moments later, Gassama, the former Sheffield Wednesday forward who replaced Curtis after the goal, fired in off the post from 14 yards in a rare Rangers attack to restore the Light Blues' two-goal lead. Gers substitute Cyriel Dessers missed a great chance in added time when he failed to beat keeper Bartlomiej Dragowski following a counter-attack but it mattered not. Rangers moved into the next qualifying round and guaranteed themselves European league phase football of some sort this season.

Proud Rangers head coach Russell Martin showered his players with praise after they progressed past Panathinaikos to reach the third qualifying round of the Champions League - but admitted they need to be less reliant on goalkeeper Jack Butland going forward. Rangers overcame the Greek side 3-1 on aggregate following a 1-1 second-leg draw at the Olympic Stadium in Athens. Protecting a 2-0 lead from the first encounter at Ibrox last week, the Scottish side fell behind to a header from Filip Djuricic on 54 minutes, only to respond emphatically on the hour mark when substitute Djeidi Gassama equalised just three minutes after coming on. The first leg is at Ibrox next week and while Martin and his staff will be desperate to progress in Europe's premier competition, they are now at the very least guaranteed Conference League football. Max Aarons takes the applause for the Rangers fans after they overcame Panathinaikos. | SOOC/AFP via Getty Images Martin only started working with his squad five weeks ago and while his team make mistakes, lacked cohesiveness at times and needed Butland to make a string of important saves, they showed admirable determination to overcome a wasteful Panathinaikos team. 'I've just said to the players in the dressing room, I'm so proud of them,' said Martin. 'To be five weeks into the process, from where they were to where they are is incredible. 'It's never easy away from home. A really difficult place to come. They really dug in and that's going to be important for us. Big John [Souttar] and Nasser [Djiga] were fantastic. Jack Butland's been brilliant over the two games; we need to rely on him less. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'It's no mean feat' for Rangers 'We spoke about the importance of the subs before the game and they did great. It's no mean feat. We've qualified for the Europa League and now we can really attack the Champions League.' Defender John Souttar added: "It was boiling out there, really difficult. They had to come out of the traps flying, we weathered the storm in the first half. We could have been better on the ball but it's a new team and that's a big win for us. "That's how you build a team, coming through those tough moments. It shows our mentality. There are going to be times things don't go our way. We've got [Jack Butland] to thank because he was excellent again.

Viktor Gyokeres' Arsenal transfer proves that more Premier League clubs should look to the Championship for new stars

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) TWO YEARS ago, after two outstanding Championship seasons with Coventry, Viktor Gyokeres was on the market for £20million. Now Arsenal could end up splashing out a whopping £63.5m on the Swedish hitman, who will make his Gunners debut in a North London derby in Hong Kong. 3 Viktor Gyokeres scored 38 goals in two seasons for Coventry Credit: PA 3 The striker cost Arsenal £63.5million from Sporting Credit: Getty Play Dream Team now! So why did no Premier League club take the plunge on Gyokeres back in 2023, when Ruben Amorim's Sporting ended up doing so? And indeed why do so few English top-flight clubs ever buy from the second tier any more? It is a bugbear among many Premier League scouts that the Championship is so frequently overlooked as a mine of talented players, proven in the English game. The argument is that elite clubs are far more likely to take a punt on players from the Portuguese, Dutch or other middle-ranking European leagues than on those from the Championship — which has far more in common with the Premier League in terms of tempo and physicality. By 2023, he was a 25-year-old coming into his prime, already renowned for his pace, strength, finishing and hold-up play — and regarded as a rare oversight from Brighton. Yet despite Gyokeres being tracked by many Premier League clubs at the time, none made a significant offer — and Sporting swooped in. The only player to outscore Gyokeres in the 2022-23 Championship campaign was 28-goal Chuba Akpom, who then moved to Ajax, rather than an English club. While Arsenal and other elite clubs might be excused for believing the step up from Championship to Champions League was too steep for Gyokeres, what about the rest of the top flight? BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS 3 So many are infected with an ongoing snobbishness over England's second tier, failing to see the division as the excellent pathway it undoubtedly is. There are exceptions, notably Crystal Palace — whose former sporting director Dougie Freedman has successfully raided the Championship. Eberechi Eze was snapped up from QPR for an initial £15m five years ago and has seen his price tag quadruple, as an England star who scored the winner in this year's FA Cup final. Michael Olise, signed by Palace from Reading for £8m, was flogged to Bayern Munich for £50m. Midfielder Adam Wharton, an £18m recruit from Blackburn, has been outstanding at Selhurst Park, with Romain Esse, signed from Millwall in January, is expected to be the next to make a big impact for the Eagles. Fellow Scot David Moyes brought Jarrod Bowen to West Ham from Hull, as well as Tim Cahill, Joleon Lescott and Phil Jagielka from Championship clubs during his first Everton stint. Aston Villa's Unai Emery spent around £1billion on 164 players during his coaching career before he ever signed an Englishman. When he dipped into the Championship for Middlesbrough's Morgan Rogers he plucked out a gem. But others refuse to make such moves, meaning an absence of money flowing down from the filthy-rich Premier League to the lower reaches of the English game. There has been a steep downward trend in Championship to Premier League transfers — save for the regular vulturing of clubs who have just been relegated from the top flight. Brighton's £10m move for Tom Watson, 18, from Sunderland, is this summer's only example of an established Premier League club signing anyone who played in the Championship last term. The Middlesbrough duo of Hayden Hackney and Finn Azaz are highly regarded, as are West Brom's Tom Fellows, Norwich striker Josh Sargent and many more. But will anyone take a calculated risk on any of them? It is doubtful.
