'Fight political battles outside court, not here', CJI tells Karnataka minister
Patil's counsel sought to contest the High Court's order dated September 28, 2024, which had set aside the proceedings, citing non-compliance with the mandatory procedure under the Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
It was alleged that Yatnal made defamatory remarks against Patil during a rally ahead of the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, tarnishing his image despite his Cabinet status.
At the outset, Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, sitting with Justice K. Vinod Chandran, made his stance clear and said, 'Fight political battles outside the court, not here.'
When the lawyer tried to press the appeal, the CJI responded curtly, 'So what?' and imposed a cost of Rs 25,000, which he later escalated to Rs 1 crore.
However, the cost was waived after the lawyer requested withdrawal of the appeal.
The Karnataka High Court had ruled that the magistrate failed to follow due process under Section 223 of the BNSS.
According to the provision, a magistrate must first examine the complainant and any witnesses under oath and provide an opportunity for the accused to be heard before taking cognisance.
The High Court found these steps were skipped, invalidating the trial process.
With the apex court's dismissal, the High Court's decision stands, bringing the defamation case against Yatnal to a close.

The dispute dates back to November 19 last year, when Hindu petitioners, including advocates Hari Shankar Jain and Vishnu Shankar Jain, filed a suit in the Sambhal district court claiming the mosque was built over a pre-existing temple. A court-ordered survey was conducted on the same day (November 19), followed by another on November 24. The second survey on November 24 led to significant unrest in Sambhal, resulting in the death of four persons and injuries to 29 police personnel. The police booked SP MP Ziaur Rahman Barq and mosque committee head Zafar Ali in relation to the violence besides registering an FIR against 2,750 unidentified persons.

PM Modi to address NDA parliamentary party meeting today amid Parliament deadlock over SIR
New Delhi, Aug 5 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address a crucial meeting of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) parliamentary party today, as the Monsoon Session of Parliament continues to be paralysed by Opposition protests over the Election Commission's special electoral roll revision in Bihar. This is the first full NDA parliamentary party meeting since the beginning of the 18th Lok Sabha and comes ahead of the nomination process for the Vice-Presidential election, which begins on August 7. While BJP parliamentary party meetings are a regular feature during sessions, this expanded format reflects the BJP's post-2024 strategy to consolidate its alliance partners, including the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Janata Dal (United), and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas). According to sources, the Prime Minister is expected to take stock of the legislative logjam and the Opposition's persistent targeting of the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in Bihar, which the Opposition alleges is being conducted to benefit the ruling coalition. The Monsoon Session, which began on July 21 and will continue till August 21, was scheduled to have 21 sittings. However, it has largely been a washout so far except for a two-day discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor due to the Opposition's continuous protests against the SIR exercise by the Election Commission of India. The Vice-Presidential poll strategy will also be on the agenda, following Jagdeep Dhankhar's sudden resignation as Vice President due to health reasons, with two years remaining in his five-year term. His resignation has initiated the process for nominating a new Vice President. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, BJP national general secretaries, and senior NDA leaders are expected to deliberate on the nomination for the Vice-Presidential election, scheduled for September 9. With a numerical majority in the electoral college, the NDA's nominee is expected to win the contest comfortably, if challenged. The NDA is also likely to formally felicitate the Prime Minister for the government's swift response to the April 22 terror incident in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which security forces launched a high-profile counter-terror operation. Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh released from jail on 40-day parole
Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was on Tuesday released on a 40-day parole by the Haryana government on Tuesday, The Indian Express reported. Singh was released from the Sunaria jail in Rohtak and left for the headquarters of his organisation in Sirsa district early on Tuesday morning. This is the third time since his conviction in 2017 that Singh has been allowed to visit the place. At other times that he has been released on parole or furlough, he stayed at his organisation's ashram in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. Singh has been out of prison for 326 days in total since his conviction, Hindustan Times reported. He was last released on furlough in April for 21 days. He was also granted a 30-day parole in January, ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections. While a furlough can be given without any specific reason after a prisoner has served a stipulated period of time in prison, parole is based on an urgent demand or need. Singh was sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment in 2017 for raping two of his women disciples at the Dera headquarters. In 2021, he and four others were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in the murder case of a former manager of his sect. However, the Punjab and Haryana High Court acquitted him in the murder case in May 2024. In February 2024, the High Court had told the Haryana government that Singh could not be granted parole without its permission. This came a month after Singh was released for 50 days, which was his seventh parole in 24 months and ninth in four years. However, in August 2024, the High Court said that the application for temporary release filed by Singh will be decided by competent authorities as per the provisions of the 2022 Haryana Good Conduct Prisoners Temporary Release Act without 'favouritism or arbitrariness'.
