Canadian CEOs leading in AI adoption, transforming workforces, and securing data
72% adopting AI agents ahead of global peers
50% hiring for AI-related roles which did not exist a year ago
14% of AI initiatives have scaled enterprise-wide, compared to 16% globally
MARKHAM, ON, May 7, 2025 /CNW/ -- Canadian CEOs are making bold strides in the global race to unlock AI's potential, according to the 2025 IBM Institute for Business Value (IBV) CEO Study. Productivity gains are the key driver behind leaders' desire to adopt generative AI, including the ability to automate routine tasks, optimize workflows, analyze data, and provide actionable insights.
The study, which surveyed 2,000 CEOs across 33 countries and 24 industries — including 80 Canadian C-Suite leaders — shows 72% of Canadian CEOs are actively adopting AI agents and preparing to implement them at scale, compared to 61% globally. Yet, these leaders also say only 14% of AI initiatives have successfully scaled AI across their organizations. Further, only 27% of AI initiatives have delivered expected ROI.
"Canadian CEOs are taking bold steps to integrate AI into their operations, signalling a clear understanding of its transformative potential," said Rob Wilmot, General Manager and Managing Partner of Consulting, IBM Canada. "But this isn't just about adopting AI – it's about embedding it thoughtfully and effectively across the organization. The IBM study indicates that Canadian businesses have the ambition. Now it's time to focus on execution."
Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is an example of leadership in AI adoption, leveraging it and digital twin technology to drive operational efficiency and situational awareness in real time. By integrating predictive AI capabilities, they are enabling proactive issue resolution and data-driven decision-making. Every employee will be equipped with a trainable AI assistant, an AI Buddy, fostering cross-functional collaboration and creating a connected support ecosystem.
"AI has been business needs-driven to ensure that we can start small and scale – that we can test its adoption, get people working on it, and then scale it across our operations," said CEO Tamara Vrooman. "Data as a single source of truth that everybody can see has been transformational for partnerships," Vrooman added. "It's helping us work better together and uncover ways to grow."
Canadian CEOs Prioritize Data and Risk-Taking as Keys to AI Success
The study indicates success in AI adoption hinges on a strong, cohesive business data strategy, and Canadian CEOs are prioritizing data as the foundation for innovation and global competitiveness. Key findings reveal:
76% of Canadian CEOs are investing in technologies before fully understanding their ROI, compared to 64% globally, underscoring a willingness to experiment.
69% are willing to take more risks than competitors to maintain a competitive edge.
43% identify poorly integrated or insufficient data as a significant barrier to AI innovation.
68% agree proprietary data is critical to realizing the full potential of generative AI.
79% view integrated enterprise-wide data architecture as vital for enabling AI-driven transformation.
Canadian CEOs: Workforce Upskilling a Key Priority for AI Adoption
Insights from the report indicate that, to stay competitive in an AI-driven future, Canadian CEOs are adopting innovative strategies to address workforce challenges, including reskilling existing talent, hiring for emerging AI-related roles, and integrating AI assistants into workflows. With 50% of Canadian CEOs hiring for positions that did not exist a year ago and 58% planning to use automation to bridge skill gaps, it is clear that workforce transformation is a priority. Rapid AI training is also becoming essential, as CEOs say 33% of the workforce will require retraining to meet the demands of an AI-powered world.
As Canadian organizations accelerate AI adoption, preparing employees to adapt to the operational and cultural shifts brought by these technologies has become a priority. YVR's Tamara Vrooman emphasized how empowering employees is essential to building confidence and capacity for AI adoption. "How do we set our people up for the future? We feel it's by giving them the confidence to use AI in different situations as part of their own development," she said.

One company is showing strong financial results stemming from the rapid advancements of artificial intelligence over the last few years. In fact, I predict it will surpass the $2 trillion market cap milestone before the end of the year. Here's the AI giant that could join the $2 trillion club. One of the biggest beneficiaries of generative AI capabilities I predict that the next member of the $2 trillion club will be Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META). Not only does it already have a market cap of roughly $1.8 trillion as of this writing on July 24 -- which puts it about 11% from $2 trillion -- but the stock currently looks undervalued relative to the potential opportunities. AI could boost its revenue in the near term while opening up even bigger opportunities in the long run. During Meta's first-quarter earnings call on April 30, CEO Mark Zuckerberg laid out five major opportunities for the company with AI. Improved advertising: Meta has long used machine learning algorithms to help surface advertisements amid organic content to drive maximum engagement. That's led to steady improvements in ad pricing for the company. It's also rolled out generative AI tools that help marketers come up with creatives (ads). In the pipeline, Meta's developing an AI agent that can take a marketer's objective and budget and create and run the entire campaign for them. That has the potential to save marketers money and increase the total number of companies running ads on Meta's properties, further pushing ad prices higher. More engaging experiences: Zuckerberg details two benefits of AI: better recommendations and new types of content. Meta has expanded its AI model to include more data points across all different types of content to improve recommendations across every surface of its apps, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. As it grows the model bigger and bigger, it's getting better and better at engaging users. That's only possible because it now has the compute power to support its large language model development. Zuckerberg also expects generative AI tools to provide new ways for creators to produce better content for users. Everything from existing content like photos and videos can be manipulated with AI, and generative AI could enable creators to produce more interactive content as well. Business messaging: Meta's WhatsApp for Business is a relatively small source of income right now. But as Meta improves its AI agent capabilities, it reduces the cost for businesses to provide customer service and sales through WhatsApp and Messenger. That could lead to a surge in WhatsApp for Business users. One analyst thinks AI agents alone are a $100 billion opportunity for Meta. A stand-alone AI chatbot: Meta has integrated the Meta AI assistant into all of its main apps and released a stand-alone version of the app as well. As the user base grows, it could provide another source of valuable advertising inventory. Importantly, since Meta is developing its own large language model for the above applications already, the additional cost of building and running a stand-alone AI chatbot is far lower than for dedicated AI companies like OpenAI or Anthropic. Devices: Zuckerberg points out the growing popularity of Meta's AI glasses. Unit sales tripled in the first quarter. Longer term, generative AI may be essential for creating an augmented reality user interface that fits into the unique setting of each user. Indeed, AI has the potential to dramatically impact Meta's financials in a positive direction in the near term while supporting its long-term objectives in virtual and augmented reality. The stock looks like a bargain right now The above factors should be able to generate strong double-digit revenue growth for Meta for years to come. The company saw 16% revenue growth last quarter, while exhibiting nice operating leverage. As a result, operating income climbed 27% year over year. The big step up in capital expenditures could weigh on earnings growth for the next couple of years as depreciation expense climbs as a result. But as the company grows into those expenses, it should continue to show operating leverage. Meta's also using excess cash flow to repurchase shares. It bought back $13.4 billion worth of its stock in the first quarter, and it still has $70 billion in cash on the balance sheet. As a result, the company should be able to generate strong earnings-per-share growth. As of this writing, the stock trades for 28 times earnings. Considering the growth potential ahead for the stock, that's an enticing price for investors. To push the stock to $2 trillion, it would have to trade for closer to 31 times earnings, which isn't an unreasonable multiple for the stock. But if Meta ends up outperforming expectations, it could trade for the same multiple and still achieve a $2 trillion valuation. I expect a combination of multiple expansion and outperformance to drive the stock to $2 trillion before the end of the year. Should you invest $1,000 in Meta Platforms right now? While Trump set an Aug. 1 deadline for countries to make trade deals with the United States, the president's ultimatum has so far resulted in only a handful of frameworks for trade agreements. Deals have been announced for Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines and the United Kingdom — but Trump indicated last week that an agreement with Canada is far from complete. Trump sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney threatening to impose 35 per cent tariffs if Canada doesn't make a trade deal by the deadline. The White House has said those duties would not apply to goods compliant with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement on trade. Canadian officials have also downplayed expectations of a new economic and security agreement materializing by Friday. 'We'll use all the time that's necessary,' Carney said last week. Countries around the world will also be watching as Trump's use of a national security statute to hit nations with tariffs faces scrutiny in the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. The U.S. Court of International Trade ruled in May that Trump does not have the authority to wield tariffs on nearly every country through the use of the International Economic Emergency Powers Act of 1977. The act, usually referred to by the acronym IEEPA, gives the U.S. president authority to control economic transactions after declaring an emergency. No previous president had ever used it for tariffs and the U.S. Constitution gives power over taxes and tariffs to Congress. The Trump administration quickly appealed the lower court's ruling on the so-called 'Liberation Day' and fentanyl-related tariffs and arguments are set to be heard in the appeal court on Thursday. The hearing combines two different cases that were pushing against Trump's tariffs. One involves five American small businesses arguing specifically against Trump's worldwide tariffs, and the other came from 12 states pushing back on both the 'Liberation Day' duties and the fentanyl-related tariffs George Mason University law professor Ilya Somin called Trump's tariff actions a 'massive power grab.' Somin, along with the Liberty Justice Center, is representing the American small businesses. 'We are hopeful — we can't know for sure obviously — we are hopeful that we will continue to prevail in court,' Somin said. Somin said they are arguing that IEEPA does not 'give the president the power to impose any tariff he wants, on any nation, for any reason, for as long as he wants, whenever he feels like it.' He added that 'the law also says there must be an emergency and an unusual and extraordinary threat to American security or the economy' — and neither the flow of fentanyl from Canada nor a trade deficit meet that definition. U.S. government data shows a minuscule volume of fentanyl is seized at the northern border. The White House has said the Trump administration is legally using powers granted to the executive branch by the Constitution and Congress to address America's 'national emergencies of persistent goods trade deficits and drug trafficking.' There have been 18 amicus briefs — a legal submission from a group that's not party to the action — filed in support of the small businesses and states pushing against Trump's tariffs. Two were filed in support of the Trump administration's actions. Brent Skorup, a legal fellow at the Washington-based Cato Institute, said the Trump administration is taking a vague statute and claiming powers never deployed by a president before. The Cato Institute submitted a brief that argued 'the Constitution specifies that Congress has the power to set tariffs and duties.' Skorup said there are serious issues with the Trump administration's interpretation of IEEPA. 'We don't want power consolidated into a single king or president,' he said. It's expected the appeals court will expedite its ruling. Even if it rules against the duties, however, they may not be immediately lifted. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has said the Supreme Court should 'put an end to this.' There are at least eight lawsuits challenging the tariffs. Canada is also being hit with tariffs on steel, aluminum and automobiles. Trump used different powers under the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 to enact those duties.
