FIFA Considering Biennial Club World Cup Starting 2029
British media reports have revealed that FIFA is studying the possibility of staging the Club World Cup every two years, beginning in 2029, a move that could further intensify the already packed international calendar.
The next edition of the tournament is scheduled for 2029, following this summer's expanded 32-team event in the United States.
According to The Guardian, major European clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Napoli have pushed for the competition to become a biennial event, encouraged by the significant financial rewards.
Reports indicate that FIFA does not plan to hold a tournament in 2027 but is considering adding one in 2031, given that the international match calendar is locked until 2030.
Among the proposals under discussion are changes to qualification rules, including raising the maximum number of clubs allowed from the same country, and a potential expansion to 48 teams, mirroring the men's World Cup format.
FIFA is also exploring the possibility of scrapping the June international break to ease fixture congestion and create space for tournaments, though UEFA is opposing the idea as it clashes with the Nations League finals.
Meanwhile, FIFA is set to launch a formal bidding process for host nations starting from the 2029 edition.
Unlike this year's U.S. tournament, which was awarded directly, future editions will be contested through open applications. Countries such as Qatar, Spain, and Morocco have already expressed interest in staging the competition.

Brazilian goalkeeper Fabio claims world record for most games - World
Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio on Tuesday claimed the record for most competitive appearances in men's football when the Brazilian played for a 1,391st time. The 44-year-old on Saturday equalled the landmark held by former England stopper Peter Shilton and Fabio has now gone one better following a 2-0 win over Colombia's America de Cali at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro. Fluminense and Brazilian media say Fabio now stands alone in football history, although neither FIFA nor regional body CONMEBOL has declared it a record. "Sometimes we don't realize the importance of such a significant achievement as breaking this record, which has stood for many years," Fabio, who has spent his entire career in Brazil, said following his clean sheet in the Copa Sudamericana last 16 second leg. The home fans chanted, "Fabio is the best goalkeeper in Brazil," and he received a commemorative plaque to mark the achievement. "No one plays so many matches without a level of professionalism like his," said Fluminense coach Renato Gaucho. "He'll undoubtedly continue to play for a long time. "It will be difficult for another player to surpass his record." Fabio won the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense in 2023 and was part of the side that reached the semi-finals of the Club World Cup in the United States this summer. He made 976 appearances for Cruzeiro between 2005 and 2022, after playing 30 times for Uniao Bandeirante and another 150 games for Vasco da Gama. His record outing against America de Cali was his 235th match for Fluminense. Fabio began his career in 1997, the year that Shilton retired. The Englishman considers his total number of appearances to be 1,387, but Guinness World Records puts the number at 1,390. Mohamed Salah became the first player to win the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) men's player of the year for a third time on Tuesday after guiding Liverpool to Premier League glory. The Egyptian scored 29 goals and provided 18 assists to propel the Reds to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title with four games to spare last season. Salah also scooped the award in the 2017/18 and 2021/22 seasons. The 33-year-old picked up the Football Writers' Association and Premier League player of the year awards in recent months. Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers won young player the year following a breakthrough campaign that saw the attacking midfielder make his senior international debut for England. Salah is joined in the 2024/25 PFA Premier League team of the year by Liverpool team-mates Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister. Milos Kerkez, who moved to Anfield from Bournemouth in June, is also selected, as are the Arsenal trio of William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes and Declan Rice. Matz Sels and Chris Wood are recognised for their fine campaigns at Nottingham Forest, while wantaway Newcastle striker Alexander Isak is included after finishing second to Salah in the Golden Boot race. Arsenal's Mariona Caldentey won the women's player of the year accolade after her role in helping the Gunners win the Champions League. The Spanish midfielder scored 19 goals in all competitions, including eight in the Champions League, in her first season in England. Olivia Smith recently joined Caldentey at Arsenal in a world-record £1 million ($1.4 million) deal and won the women's young player of the year prize following her superb season at Liverpool.
