Uber, Ola to remain off Mumbai streets as massive Azad Maidan rally planned today

India Today18-07-2025
The ongoing strike by drivers of app-based cab aggregators such as Ola and Uber is set to intensify in Maharashtra today, with protesters planning to gather at Mumbai's Azad Maidan. Cab services have been suspended across Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur since Wednesday, as drivers demand fare rationalisation to bring app-based rates in line with traditional black-and-yellow taxis, among other issues. The strike, now in its fourth day, has already caused significant disruptions for commuters, particularly at airports and railway stations, where long queues and extended waiting times have become routine. The protesters have held a round of discussions with the government, but failed to reach a breakthrough.advertisement'The cab drivers will stage a sit-in protest at Azad Maidan from Friday to escalate the agitation. No further talks have taken place with the government since the meeting with state transport minister Pratap Sarnaik at Mantralaya on Tuesday,' said a representative of the striking drivers, indicating a deadlock with no resolution in sight.
The protest is being spearheaded by the Maharashtra Gig Kamgar Manch, which has raised several demands, including a ban on bike taxis, a cap on the number of black-and-yellow taxis and autorickshaws, and the creation of a welfare board for app-based drivers. The drivers are also pushing for the enactment of a 'Maharashtra Gig Workers' Act', inspired by similar laws in other states, to address the growing concerns over gig workers' rights and welfare.KN Kshirsagar, president of the Maharashtra Gig Kamgar Manch, said that nearly 70 per cent of app-based cabs have stayed off the roads, severely limiting ride availability and affecting daily commuters.Beyond commuter inconvenience, the strike has also raised safety concerns. Some citizens have reported that striking drivers are coercing their peers into joining the protest by stopping them from operating. The Chandivali Citizen Welfare Association shared an incident on social media showing cab drivers confronting a fellow driver who continued to work during the strike, fuelling debate over the ethics of protest tactics.Airports and railway stations have been particularly affected, with limited alternative transport options. The Mumbai airport operator has advised passengers to make travel arrangements in advance and explore alternatives to avoid delays. With no progress in government negotiations, the agitation appears set to continue, and the impact on commuters is likely to worsen unless the drivers' demands are meaningfully addressed.- Ends

Ola & Uber Now Costlier In Mumbai, Here's Why Fares Just Jumped By 50 Percent

Last Updated: The fare surge means trips that once cost Rs 302.4 (like Andheri to Worli) will now cost Rs 453.6. Mumbaikars are now paying more for their daily app-based cab rides. In a recent development, fares have gone up by almost 50 percent, following the Maharashtra government's recommendation to increase per kilometre base rates for Ola and Uber. This comes after driver unions pushed for fairer earnings, claiming current fares are unsustainable, as per Mid-day. Earlier, Mumbai's base fare stood at Rs 16/km, but the latest recommendation bumps it up to Rs 24/km. Pune has seen a similar hike—from Rs 12/km to Rs 18/km. How Much More Are You Paying Now? Here's a break down of fare hike with some examples: Andheri to Worli (18.9 km): Fare increased from Rs 302.4 to Rs 453.6 Difference: Rs 151.2 Terminal 2 to Vashi (25 km): Fare increased from Rs 400 to Rs 600 Difference: Rs 200 Goregaon to Fort (33 km): Difference: Rs 328 The increase in fare aligns with the new base rate of Rs 24/km, significantly changing the cost of both short and long trips. Why the Sudden Hike? The decision follows weeks of protests and negotiations between driver unions and the government. Union leaders argued that the current rates made it difficult for drivers to make ends meet, especially with rising fuel and maintenance costs. The fare revision aims to offer more sustainable income for cab drivers. What's the Public Reaction? While drivers may benefit from this change, daily commuters and short-distance travellers might need to reconsider their budgets. For many, the fare increase could mean turning to public transport or carpooling more often. view comments First Published: July 25, 2025, 09:07 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Cabbies threaten to boycott Uber app from today, fares may surge

Pune: Cab rides in the city, Mumbai and Nagpur may be dearer because the Maharashtra Kamgar Sabha, a wing of the Indian Gig Workers' Front, has threatened to boycott the Uber platform from Friday. "Uber approached the Bombay high court against the ongoing protest and strike of cab drivers, following which the court restrained protesting unions and their members from stopping or blocking Uber cabs. Ola and Rapido didn't approach the court like Uber. While we are looking for legal options, cabbies will boycott the Uber application," Keshav Kshirsagar, the president of the Indian Gig Workers' Front, said, after a meeting between the the senior office-bearers of the union and representatives of Pune, Mumbai and Nagpur RTOs at the transport commissioner's office in Mumbai. A majority of cabbies tend to use the Uber application in Pune, a source said. "Cabbies can work on all three applications. With Uber being boycotted, there will definitely be surge pricing," Kshirsagar said. The fares have shot up. A majority of cabbies opt for the Regional Transport Authority (RTA)-approved fares, not what reflects on the applications. Why doesn't the Pune RTO take any action against them is beyond my understanding," said Koregaon Park's Rajesh Shinde. In Pune, the RTA-approved rate for cabs is Rs75 for the first 3km and Rs25 for every subsequent km. Kshirsagar, the president of the Indian Gig Workers' Front, said nothing concrete came out in Thursday's meeting. "The aggregators had assured in Wednesday's meeting that they would give a letter mentioning the date from when the RTA-approved fares would reflect in their applications. But no such letter has been provided by any of the companies, following which the meeting was convened on Thursday. The officials said RTAs, headed by district collectors, decide these matters. We cannot go on a strike because the high court has prevented us from doing the same. But cabbies can boycott the Uber application," he added.

Cool Cabs fare not applied to Ola and Uber as Maharashtra govt rejects Khatua panel recommendation

Mumbai: "Ola and Uber cannot be compared with Cool Cabs as the latter is a metered taxi while the former two are privately run vehicles. So the question of increasing fares at par with Cool Cabs does not arise," said a senior official from the transport commissioner's office, where a crucial meeting was held between transport commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar and the union leaders. The official further said that there was no mechanism to determine fares for Ola and Uber at present, and the Khatua panel on fare fixation suggested in the past a fare mechanism for aggregator cabs, which was not accepted by the govt. The Khatua panel formula is used to determine fare hikes of auto rickshaws, Kaali Peeli taxis, and Cool Cabs across MMR. The meeting ended in a stalemate, with the drivers now deciding to take a morcha to the commissioner's office soon for a 'show of strength' and protest against the govt. The union has also decided to move the Bombay High Court on Friday against the restraint order passed in favour of Uber. The court restrained protesting unions and their members from stopping or blocking Uber cabs and assaulting or threatening its drivers and passengers. "We will seek a stay on this order and, at the same time, all drivers will boycott the Uber app platform from Friday," Maharashtra Kamgar Sena President Keshav Kshirsagar told the media. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top Free Activities for Kids This July Yayasan Mendaki Learn More Undo The drivers are demanding fares for aggregator cabs be at par with Cool Cab fares of a minimum of Rs 32 per km. You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai A senior transport official said that only the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) can take decisions on Ola and Uber cabs, and not the transport commissioner's office. "Efforts are on to bring a new Aggregator cab policy in the state -- which will bring Ola, Uber, and also Rapido in the ambit of the state govt. In that case, we will be able to determine fares. At present, these aggregator companies can decide their own fares as they do not have metered taxis and operate on All India tourist permits only," the official said.
