Investors walk fine line as Trump tariffs temper rate hopes

Iraqi News4 days ago
Hong Kong – Asian investors trod warily Wednesday amid lingering uncertainty over Donald Trump's trade war, while another round of data indicated further weakness in the US economy but added interest rate cut speculation.
The US president's claim that Washington was 'very close to a deal' to extend a China truce provided some optimism, though that was tempered by his warning of fresh levies on pharmaceuticals and chips.
After a strong start to the week sparked by hopes that painful jobs data will force the US Federal Reserve to lower rates next month, another batch of figures added fuel to the fire.
A closely watched index of services activity showed it had barely grown in July as companies contend with weaker hiring conditions and rising prices.
The news came after Friday's jobs data revealed far fewer US jobs were created than expected in May, June and July.
'Market pricing has moved aggressively in favour of a September rate cut by the Federal Reserve, after a weak July jobs report and ugly revisions to May and June signalled the US labour market may finally be cracking under the pressure of tariffs,' said Neil Wilson at Saxo Markets.
'The data pushed the US closer to stagflationary territory,' he said.
'So far, the market has held up and looked beyond the tariff risks, but we may at last be seeing the hard data finally catch up with the soft survey data.'
But while bets on a rate cut in September have soared, he remained unsure that such a move was a certainty.
Stocks fluctuated through the morning.
Tokyo, Shanghai, Sydney, Wellington, Manila and Jakarta rose but Hong Kong, Singapore, Seoul and Taipei were in the red.
Confidence remains thin as Trump's tariff threats linger, with several countries — including India and Switzerland — still to hammer out deals before his delayed deadline Thursday, and agreed levies with others begin to kick in.
In his latest salvo, Trump told CNBC he was looking at hitting pharmaceuticals with tolls that eventually reach 250 percent, while semiconductors were also in the firing line.
He has said he will also hammer India over its purchases of Russian oil.
Still, Trump did strike a positive note on China, which is in talks with US officials to continue a truce agreed in May that saw the world's two largest economies pare down their eye-watering triple-digit tariffs.
Regarding Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump told CNBC's 'Squawk Box' that 'I'll end up having a meeting before the end of the year, most likely, if we make a deal.
'If we don't make a deal, I'm not going to have a meeting. I mean, you know, what's the purpose of meeting if we're not going to make a deal?
'But we're getting very close to a deal.'
He added that his relationship with Xi was 'very good' and that 'I think we'll make a good deal. It's not imperative, but I think we're going to make a good deal'.

Oil Prices mark steepest weekly loss since June on economic worries

Shafaq News Oil held steady on Friday as markets awaited a meeting in coming days between Russian president Vladimir Putin and his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump, but prices marked their steepest weekly losses since late June on a tariff-hit economic outlook. Brent crude futures settled 16 cents, or 0.2%, higher at $66.59 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were unchanged at $63.88. Brent fell 4.4% over the week, while WTI finished 5.1% lower than last Friday's close. U.S. crude fell over 1% earlier in the session after Bloomberg News reported that Washington and Moscow were aiming to reach a deal to halt the war in Ukraine that would lock in Russia's occupation of territory seized during its military invasion. U.S. and Russian officials are working towards an agreement on territories for a planned summit meeting between Trump and Putin as early as next week, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. The potential meeting raises expectations of a diplomatic end to the war in Ukraine, which could lead to eased sanctions on Russia, and comes as trade tensions have been on the rise between Trump and buyers of Russian oil. This week, Trump threatened to increase tariffs on India if it kept purchasing Russian oil. Trump also said China, the largest buyer of Russian crude, could be hit with tariffs similar to those levied against Indian imports. "Various non-oil considerations are at play, including fears over the impact of tariffs and the headlines flying over the last few days regarding a Trump and Putin meeting in the near term," said Neil Crosby, an energy market analyst at Sparta Commodities. "Headline risk is particularly strong currently with flip-flopping regarding who will turn up to a meeting over Ukraine and under what circumstances." Higher U.S. tariffs on imports from a host of trade partners went into effect on Thursday, raising concern over economic activity and demand for crude oil, ANZ Bank analysts said in a note. OPEC+ agreed on Sunday to raise oil production by 547,000 barrels per day for September, the latest in a series of accelerated output hikes to regain market share, adding to supply. The U.S. oil rig count, an indicator of future supply, rose by one to 411 this week. "Bearish sentiment has returned this week as key OPEC+ members announced a second 'quadruple' output unwind for September (thus fully restoring their extra voluntary cuts of 2.2 mmb/d) and President Trump's sweeping import tariffs took effect against most countries," analysts at FGE NexantECA said. Trump on Thursday also said he will nominate Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Stephen Miran to serve out the final few months of a newly vacant seat at the Federal Reserve, fuelling expectations of a more dovish policy ahead. Lower interest rates reduce consumer borrowing costs and can boost economic growth and demand for oil. The dollar firmed on Friday but headed for a weekly fall. A stronger dollar hurts demand for dollar-denominated crude from foreign buyers. Money managers cut their net long U.S. crude futures and options positions in the week to August 5, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) said.

Iraq expands employment programs

Shafaq News – Baghdad Iraq's unemployment rate stands at 13.5–14%, the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs reported on Saturday, outlining two years of government initiatives to curb joblessness. Ministry Spokesperson Hassan Khuwam told Shafaq News that since early 2023, more than 962,000 new welfare cards have been issued, expanding the social protection network for low-income families, including young couples. He pointed to the 2023 launch of the Mihan (Professions) digital platform, which connects job seekers with employers by allowing applicants to post their skills and enabling businesses to search for suitable candidates—helping narrow the gap between labor supply and demand. Khuwam said that 37 vocational training centers across Baghdad and other provinces—locally managed but overseen by the ministry—partner with domestic and international organizations to deliver market-relevant skills, noting that a planned academy, in partnership with a Chinese firm, will train Iraqis for major investment projects—particularly in the oil sector—reducing reliance on foreign labor. To foster entrepreneurship, the ministry offers loans of 20M dinars (~$14,300), 30M dinars (~$21,450), and 50M dinars (~$35,750), requiring recipients to hire one to three additional employees based on the loan size, with all hires registered in the social security system. 'The ministry has fully digitized its services—from job postings to applications and automated candidate selection—to ensure transparency and eliminate human interference,' he added. The spokesperson emphasized that these measures aim to generate sustainable employment, boost youth participation in the workforce, and drive long-term economic growth.
