Freedom fighters honoured and welfare assistance distributed to beneficiaries on Independence Day
RAMANATHAPURAM The 79th Independence Day celebrations were marked by honouring freedom fighters and distribution of benefits to the needy people in Ramanathapuram district on Friday. Unfurling the national flag, District Collector Simranjeet Singh Kahlon took the salute and inspected a guard of honour. He distributed welfare assistance to the tune of ₹84.29 lakh to 80 people on the occasion. He also gave away appreciation certiifcates to 304 personnel from various government departments and public for rendering yeomen services during the year. The I-Day also witnessed a colourful presentation of dance and among other events organised by the government schools and children from the NCC, NSS and other units in schools and colleges. Ramanathapuram Range DIG of Police Pa Moorthy, SP G Chandeesh, District Forest Officer Hemalatha, Additional Collector Divyan Shenegan, District Revenue Officer R Govindarajulu, RDO Raja Manoharan and others participated. Sivaganga Sivaganga Collector K. Porkodi hoisted the national flag and inspected the guard of honour accompanied by SP Shiva Prasad. The Collector gave away benefits to the tune of ₹4.22 lakh to 10 beneficiaries on the occasion and honoured freedom fighters and their legal heirs marking the I-day celebrations. A total of 300 employees from different departments were recognised with an appreciation certificate each for their commendable service. Around 300 children from government and private schools displayed a variety entertainment programme. MLA P R Senthil Nathan, Devakottai Sub-Collector Ayush Venkat Vats, DRO S Selvasurabhi, Project Director (DRDA) G Arvind, PA (general) M Muthukazhuvan and other officers participated. Theni Theni Collector Ranjith Singh hoisted the national flag and took the salute organised by the armed reserve police personnel accompanied by SP Sneha Priya. After presenting welfare assistance to 47 beneficiaries to the tune of ₹67.60 lakh, the Collector honoured the freedom fighters and their families on the occasion. The Theni district administration presented meritorious certificates to 238 persons from various government departments for their yeomen services during the year. A colorful display of cultural events was presented by over 370 children from schools in the district. The public applauded the participants. Senior officials including Sub Collector Rajat Beden, Project Director Abida Hanif and among others participated. Dindigul Dindigul District Collector S Saravanan unfurled the national flag from the district playground campus on Friday amidst applause and releasing of tri-colour balloons on the occasion. The Collector presented appreciation certificates to the government employees and those from the community for meritorious services. The Mahatma Gandhi Statue in the School Education Department premises was illuminated and the Collector garlanded the statue. Welfare assistance was given away to 109 people to the tune of ₹2.20 crore. The cultural events received a big round of applause from the gathering as over 250 children presented multiple programmes based on popular national songs. The TNSTC managers honoured crew members Eswaran, Satyamurthi and Gopinath for their honesty in handing over the valuables to the rightful owners, who had travelled in the buses. The GM gave away cash awards to the tune of ₹51,500 to 42 children who had successfully passed and scored higher marks in the 10th and plus two exams, a press release said. Virudhunagar Virudhunagar District Collector N. O. Sukhaputhra hoisted the national flag and took the salute from a special vehicle at the 79th Independence Day celebrations in Virudhunagar. The Northeastern States defied a boycott call by extremist groups to celebrate the country's 79th Independence Day peacefully, barring a stray incident in Meghalaya's capital, Shillong. Officials said motorcycle-borne miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at the Pasteur Beat House early on Friday (August 15, 2025) morning. A police vehicle was partially damaged in the attack, suspected to have been carried out by youths associated with the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council, one of the extremist groups that gave the boycott call. In their Independence Day speeches, the Chief Ministers of the region outlined their plans. While most were upbeat, Assam's Himanta Biswa Sarma warned about a future where Assamese people would be at the mercy of 'unknown people' unless they defend their identity. 'We, the Assamese, cannot stay silent, or else we will lose our race, land, and hearth in 10 years. About 80% of our Ministers will be unknown people within 15 years, and the I-Day tricolour will be hoisted by an unknown Chief Minister two decades hence,' he said. Promising to continue with the anti-encroachment drive to reclaim government lands, he said the bureaucracy under previous governments will have to explain how 'infiltrators' were allowed to take over swathes of forestlands and notified grazing lands. King Charles leads tributes to mark 80 years since end of World War II
London, Aug 15 (PTI) King Charles III on Friday led tributes to war veterans from around the world, including Commonwealth countries such as India, for their sacrifice as the UK commemorated the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Victory over Japan (VJ) Day was declared on August 15, 1945, following Imperial Japan's surrender to the Allied Forces. The 80-year milestone was marked with a 'National Service of Remembrance" honouring those who continued to fight and those who lost their lives during the final three months of the Second World War in the Far East. This included thousands of soldiers who served alongside British Armed Forces from countries, including pre-Partition India, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Nepal and various African nations. 'On this day of profound remembrance, I speak to you in that same spirit of commemoration and celebration as we honour anew all those whose service and sacrifice saw the forces of liberty prevail," said Charles, in an audio message recorded earlier in the month. 'Their experience reminds us that war's true cost extends beyond battlefields, touching every aspect of life – a tragedy all-too vividly demonstrated by conflicts around the world today," he said. The King and his wife, Queen Camilla, went on to lead a two-minute silence at the remembrance service held at the National Memorial Arboretum, Staffordshire, in the West Midlands region of England. An estimated 71,000 soldiers from Britain and the Commonwealth died fighting in the war against Japan, which concluded three months after Victory in Europe (VE) Day on May 8, 1945. 'Eighty years since our victory in the Second World War, we pay our respects to the many who fought, were captured, and made the ultimate sacrifice in the Far East," said Prime Minister Keir Starmer. 'Our country owes a great debt to those who fought for a better future, so we could have the freedoms and the life we enjoy today. We must honour that sacrifice with every new generation," he said. On Friday night, hundreds of buildings across the UK will be lit up to mark VJ 80, including Buckingham Palace, 10 Downing Street, the Houses of Parliament and the Tower of London. 'We must never forget this vital part of our national story. By coming together to hear the stories of our brave VJ Day veterans first-hand, we can ensure that the legacy of our British Armed Forces and those from across the Commonwealth is passed on to future generations," said UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy. 'Thirty thousand British personnel, alongside many more from Commonwealth and Allied forces, lost their lives in the Far East campaign. Their bravery and resilience forged a brighter future and after years of conflict, a lasting peace," said Defence Secretary John Healey. Commemorations have been taking place in the UK throughout this week, including a reception for war veterans hosted by Starmer at Downing Street and a sunset wreath-laying ceremony at the Memorial Gates in London on Thursday to pay tribute to Commonwealth personnel. The Imperial War Museums (IWM) new contemporary film 'August 1945: It Was Over Then' will be shown at screenings around the UK, alongside a free augmented reality trail 'August 1945: A World Changed' taking place at IWM North to tell the story of VJ Day. The events are part of the UK government's commemorations throughout 2025 to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, with this week's VJ Day 80 marking the culmination following four days of events in May to mark VE Day.
