SEREMBAN: Five friends claimed trial at the Magistrate's court here to charges of causing grievous hurt to a secondary school boy and rioting.
Nur Ezwan Ezanie Rohaizad, 24, Nur Ariq Farhan Ismail, 21, Shazrin Shah Mohd Norazham, 19 and two others aged 17 pleaded not guilty after the charges were read to them before magistrate Nurul Saqinah Rosli.
For the first charge, they were charged with causing grievous hurt to the 17-year-old male victim, alongside other suspects who were still at large.
The alleged offence was committed at the Kg Sentosa Jaya futsal court around 11pm on May 8.
They were charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same legislation, which carries a jail term of up to seven years and a fine upon conviction.
For the second, they were charged with rioting at the same place and time.
For this, they were charged under Section 147 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to two years or both upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor P. Rubini then offered the accused bail of RM7,000 each for the causing grievous hurt charge and RM6,000 for rioting.
Razqeeyanur Sarini Salzali from the Legal Aid Department, representing the five, pleaded for a lower bail.
She said the three accused earned between RM1,000 and RM1,500 a month. The young offenders, she said, would be bailed by their mothers who earned RM1,000 each doing odd jobs.
The court then offered a bail of RM4,500 with one surety to each of the accused and ordered them to stay away from the victim. She then fixed June 16 for mention.
Lawyers Hanif Hassan and Muhammad Wajih Zakwan kept a watching brief for the victim.
A video and photos showing the victim with a bloodied face had gone viral after the alleged incident. It is believed to have been taken after he was assaulted by a group of men.
The incident is believed to have stemmed from a misunderstanding in which one of the suspects thought the victim had injured his younger brother.

Kg Parit Seberang in Kuala Pilah selected as IGP's MADANI adopted village

KUALA PILAH: A total of RM1 million has been allocated to upgrade Kampung Parit Seberang, which has been selected as the Inspector-General of Police's (IGP) Kampung Angkat MADANI (MADANI Adopted Village). Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said that the village was selected by the Bukit Aman Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (JPJKK), based on its infrastructure status, which was assessed to be below 50 per cent complete, and in need of special attention. He said that the Kampung Parit Seberang Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) encompasses three villages - Kampung Parit Mainau, Kampung Parit Mungkal and Kampung Parit Istana - covering a total area of 3.3 square kilometres. 'I would like to share that RM1 million has been allocated, through the Ministry of Finance, to support the entire initiative to upgrade the village, not to mention, omak sey oghang sini (my mother is from here),' he said. He added that, beyond narrowing the development gap in basic infrastructure between rural and urban areas, the programme aims to deliver high-quality community services, through collaboration between ministries, departments, agencies, and public universities. He said this at the IGP's MADANI Adopted Village community programme, held in Kampung Parit Seberang, which was also attended by state senior executive councillor, Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias, here, today. Razarudin said the proposed upgrade projects include improvements to buildings, landscaping and fencing around the Kampung Parit Seberang surau, road repairs and resurfacing, refurbishment of the Kampung Parit Seberang community hall, and the installation of 20 solar-powered street lights throughout the village. He added that the upgrading works are being closely monitored by the Bukit Aman JPJKK and the Kuala Pilah district police headquarters (IPD), with the aim of ensuring that all improvements are implemented with good governance. 'I have high hopes that this government initiative will be put to good use, for the comfort and well-being of the local community,' he said. Meanwhile, Kampung Parit Seberang JPKK chairman Hasnan Abd Malek, 55, expressed his gratitude to the government for selecting the village as the IGP's MADANI Adopted Village. 'This selection is a great advantage in our aim to achieve zero crime. Alhamdulillah, it will bring many benefits to the villagers, especially in terms of security, as there will now be regular police patrols in the village,' he said.

High Court sets Aug 17 for mention in Sabari Baharom murder case

ALOR STAR: The High Court here has fixed Aug 17 for mention of a murder case involving a contractor and his nephew, who are accused of killing retired Felcra employee Sabari Baharom, 62, last year. Judge Datuk Mohamad Abazafree Mohd Abbas set the date after being informed that the defence had yet to complete the required document submissions. Deputy public prosecutor Kamaliza Md Zain appeared for the prosecution, while both accused were represented by counsel T. Jayaraj. Family members of the late Sabari were present during the proceedings. On April 15, the accused, Mazuan Hanafi, 39, and Muhd Asyraf Idris, 27, claimed trial at the High Court to the charge of murdering Sabari on Sept 4, 2024. According to the charge, the two were jointly accused of killing the victim on a bridge in Kampung Empa, along Sungai Padang Terap in Kubang Pasu, at around 5.30am. The charge was framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries the mandatory death penalty, or, if not sentenced to death, imprisonment for a minimum of 30 years and up to 40 years. Sabari, who lived alone in Kampung Mengkuang Tengah, Kuala Pegang, Baling, was reported missing on Sept 4 last year. The case was reclassified as a murder investigation on Sept 30, after police arrested two main suspects, who were previously carrying out renovation work at a neighbour's house. Kedah police chief Datuk Fisol Salleh reportedly said the suspects confessed to binding Sabari's hands, taping his mouth, and dumping him into Sungai Padang Terap. Investigators believe the victim was abducted after recognising the suspects during a break-in at his home. It was previously reported that one of the suspects, a contractor, was allegedly a gambling addict who used RM16,000 from Sabari's bank account to gamble in Batam, Indonesia.
