BBC Fawlty Towers cast 50 years on from brave comebacks to tragic health battles
September 19, 2025 should seem like an ordinary day but for the die-hard legions of Fawlty Towers fans t'll be a day they'll either give their cars a damn good thrashing or avoid being hit by a falling moose's head.
That day will mark exactly 50 years since the first episode of arguably Britain's greatest sitcom first aired.
The farcical exploits of Basil Fawlty and his dysfunctional team in their sorry-looking Torquay hotel have become the stuff of TV folklore.
At the core of the show were the hilarious antics of hotel owner Basil Fawlty, portrayed by John Cleese, his patient wife Sybil, clever chambermaid Polly, played by Connie Booth, and the bumbling Spanish waiter Manuel.
The idea for the show came to John after a stay at a Devon hotel with a memorable proprietor. That inspiration prompted both him and Booth, to whom he was married at the time, to write the play and bring it to life.
It may have been off their air since 1979, but Fawlty Towers still left a huge legacy. It spawned a successful theatre production, fans worldwide still love the show and a reboot of the show created by Cleese and his daughter Camilla was announced in 2023.
On the eve of its golden anniversary, we have a look at where the cast is now.
John Cleese – Basil Fawlty
The man needs no introduction. Cleese was comedy royalty by the time Fawlty Towers began thanks to his work on Monty Python and he would continue to enjoy immense success long after the show ended.
At 85, he isn't slowing down and 2025 is proving a very busy year. He has written a book, Fawlty Towers: Fawlts and All, revealing his best memories from working on the show. He will also appear in a live Q&A in Bristol's St George concert hall on August 27 to launch his book and talk about the show's anniversary.
In addition, Cleese will mark another golden jubilee for his other famous creation – Monty Python and the Holy Grail – with a Q&A tour across the US this autumn.
He has been married to jewellery designer Jennifer Wade since his 2012, his fourth marriage following his break-ups from Connie Booth (in 1978), Barbra Trentham (in 1990) and Alyce Eichelberger (in 2008). He also has two children, Cynthia and Camilla.
Prunella Scales – Sybil Fawlty
Prunella Scales was already a star on the stage and small screen by the time Fawlty Towers began. Since her turn as Basil's long-suffering wife Sybil, the 93-year-old appeared in movies such as Howards End and The Hound of the Baskervilles. Those of a certain age will also remember her hilarious turn as Jane Horrocks' fictional mother in the famous Tesco ads from the 1990s.
Fast forward to today and the acting legend is battling vascular dementia, with which she was diagnosed in 2013. But that did not stop Scales from taking on further projects. For instance, she appeared in the Channel 4 show Great Canal Journeys with her late husband Timothy West, while last year she made an acclaimed stage comeback at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival – albeit a recorded part – as Queen Victoria in the play Queen.
Connie Booth – Polly Sherman
While Basil was losing his head, Polly - the calm and ambitious waitress played by Connie Booth - was keeping hers. The genius character provided a brilliant foil to the hot-headed hotelier and her lines were a testament to Booth's writing skills.
Not that she wants to hear much about it, though, as she recently admitted in an interview with the Radio Times that she felt like a "counterfeit" instead of feeling "flattered" whenever people praise her work in creating Fawlty Towers.
"For half a century, I've been receiving praise for lines which John wrote. When people quote back words from the script, instead of flattered I felt counterfeit. I've had to say, 'No, John wrote that'," she said.
Booth was married to John Cleese between 1968 and 1978. Since then, she appeared in a few TV roles before quitting acting altogether in 1995 to become a psychotherapist. Now retired, the 84-year-old lives in north London with her second husband, American theatre critic John Lahr.
Andrew Sachs – Manuel
Andrew Sachs faced his own dramatic moments during filming. While shooting the legendary episode The Germans, a fire stunt that went awry left him suffering second-degree acid burns.
He also became the victim of an accident involving a defective prop handled by actor John, resulting in a severe headache.
Despite these incidents, his role as Manuel endeared Sachs to millions, among them Cleese who heaped praised on him. He once told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "If you met him you would never think for a moment that he was a comedian, you would think he was a rather cultivated bank manager possibly retired, because he was quite quiet and poised and thoughtful. And then you stuck that moustache on him and he turned into a completely different human being. He was wonderful."
Sachs tragically died in November 2016 aged 86 following a struggle with vascular dementia. His widow Melody passed away 10 months later.
Brian Hall – Terry Hughes
Brian Hall, recognised for playing hotel chef Terry Hughes, developed a close bond with Cleese throughout the series. In an amusing incident years after filming concluded, Brian was given a personally signed autograph from John as a joke; Brian cheekily responded that he'd rather have a "signed Rolls-Royce car", which prompted John to post him a toy car instead.
Sadly, Brian succumbed to cancer in a hospice in 1997, aged 59. A year before his death, he had a defiant message for the Mirror about his illness: "Cancer is a bully and I hate bullies. This old boy cancer will get about as much change out of me as all the other bullies I've met nothing."

After a strong start, the decision has tanked the season for me. This is why the latest announcement has left a bitter taste in my mouth. Strictly Come Dancing has started to reveal the celebrities who will be taking part in this year's edition. It began with a bang as Nitro from Gladiators and Dr. River Song were unveiled as participants. However, it has now taken a turn that has left a bitter taste in my mouth with the 10th announcement of the season. Former The Apprentice star, businessman and social media influencer Thomas Skinner has joined the cast. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad It might sound like a perfectly adequate addition and one that feels like it should have happened years ago. But for me, personally, it has ruined what enthusiasm I had for the show. BBC has just ruined Strictly Come Dancing with latest cast decision Thomas Skinner has joined the cast of Strictly Come Dancing | BBC I quite liked Thomas Skinner during his time on The Apprentice, he had buckets of charm and came across really well. His appearance on Celebrity MasterChef created one of the all-time great reaction gifs. If he had simply faded into the background, perhaps popping up on a TV show or another from time to time, he would have remained a fond figure in my memory. Unfortunately, that is not what has happened. He has become an increasingly loud and polarising figure on social media. If you have spent any time on X (formerly Twitter) in recent months, you have likely come across posts from the BOSH man (although Big John might have a stronger claim to that title). Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Mixed in with posts about his family, business and favourite cafe, Skinner has dabbled in politics. For example, earlier this year he wrote: 'I don't think there is many in government you can trust in my opinion. It's all smoke and mirrors. Lies & corruption. This country needs to be run by the people, for the people.' Websites like The Telegraph, New Statesman and The Spectator have hailed him as one of the most important voices on the right. He has used terms like 'the woke brigade' to decry the 'death' of the English fry-up and pints on a Friday night. Skinner appeared on a Spectator video with former Reform MP Rupert Lowe titled 'How to Save England' in July. It is a pernicious idea that our country needs 'saving' at all. Skinner has also played into the growing right-wing narrative of the UK being 'unsafe' in his social media posts, once claiming his mates had 'no choice' but to flee to Dubai because of how 'lawless' the country has become. I'm sure the tax incentives played no part in those decisions. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad He was quick to express his support for US President Donald Trump, after he was re-elected in November. The Daily Mirror reports that he blasted Foreign Secretary David Lammy for criticising Trump. He wrote: 'I love Trump, I think he is brilliant, that's my opinion. I think it's good he is back in charge, it will be good for the UK economy.' Just this week he posted about meeting with the Vice President of the US, JD Vance. He wrote: 'Here is a pic of Me and Vice President @JDVance towards the end of the night after a few beers🍻 I'm overdressed in my suit, but when the VP invites you to a BBQ, you don't risk turning up in shorts an flip-flops😂 Cracking night in the beautiful English countryside with JD, his friends and family. Once in a lifetime. Bosh.' It comes in the same week that Donald Trump called in the National Guard on the capital city of Washington D.C. and ICE continues to round up people for deportation. Same-sex marriage is also at risk of being overturned, with the Supreme Court formally asked to overturn it this week. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Have we learned nothing from allowing Nigel Farage on I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here? Making figures who dabble in the far-right (or are overtly in the case of Farage) seem 'reasonable' is a massive mistake. Thomas Skinner might not be an MP for Reform or a politician per se, but he has been dabbling in right-wing talking points more frequently. Giving him a spot on prime-time TV could lead more people towards his social media platforms, potentially letting them be sucked in by the narratives spun around how 'unsafe' our country is. After the first spate of announcements, I was excited - especially once La Voix was confirmed. But personally, the addition of Skinner has ruined it for me and left a bitter taste in my mouth. Social media reacts to Thomas Skinner's Strictly reveal I am not alone in my disappointment in the decision to cast Thomas Skinner. Many took to social media to express their concern after he was announced for series 23. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad One wrote: 'Well this has killed my mood after the excitement of La Voix.' Another added: 'First voted out I beg, what a disappointment.' A person joked: 'Who's next? Ghislaine Maxwell?' Another concerned user added: 'Farage next year?' One user on social media wrote: 'It's August, we don't play April fools.' Another echoed: 'Is this a joke?' In a salient point, a person said: 'Thought they didn't want political figures on the show.' And another echoed: 'The BBC and ITV's obsession with platforming right-wing grifters (never left wing) plays a major role in the current political landscape. They know exactly what they're doing.'

BBC Strictly Come Dancing star Tom Skinner's life – criminal past to JD Vance barbeque
Tom Skinner is one of the latest stars to be announced for the 2022 series of Strictly Come Dancing, but the former The Apprentice star's journey to the ballroom has been anything but ordinary Former The Apprentice candidate Tom Skinner has been confirmed as one of the latest celebrities joining the sparkling Strictly Come Dancing dancefloor, though his path to the BBC ballroom has been far from conventional. The 32 year old Essex-born businessman, now renowned for his thriving pillow and mattress empire, initially rose to prominence on the 2019 series of The Apprentice. His vibrant personality, mischievous Essex wit, and tireless determination endeared him to audiences, despite his departure from Sir Alan Sugar's boardroom in week nine. However, prior to his television appearances, commercial achievements, and celebrity status, Skinner's life took a dramatically different direction. In 2016, at just 24 years old, he as convicted for handling stolen merchandise valued at nearly £40,000 after purchasing 4,992 tubes of Body Shop cleansing gel and having 2,000 diazepam tablets from what he subsequently acknowledged was an "unreliable source". It comes after Strictly Come Dancing's Gorka Marquez pulls out of show. He was later sentenced and his conviction has since been spent and Skinner has since maintained he's a "changed man". He told the Daily Mail in a previous interview: "Many years ago before I had my business, I was young and naive and bought stock from someone I didn't know", reports the Daily Star. "I wasn't aware the stock was stolen and paid the consequences for the mistake I made. That is now well in my past, I've had a string of successful companies since then. I am a changed man." After news of Tom's past broke just before his stint on The Apprentice in 2019 aired, a BBC spokesperson said: "DBS checks are done for all The Apprentice candidates by the production company ahead of filming. "A spent conviction is not disclosed under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. Spent convictions are designed to help people move on in life and not be excluded from opportunities to help further their careers." Tom went on to appear on the BBC show and, since his TV appearance, his career has flourished in remarkable ways. Renowned for his candid videos on social media platform X, Skinner's posts about business, politics, and everyday life have garnered hundreds of thousands of followers. His social media presence has since sparked an extraordinary friendship with US Vice President JD Vance, Donald Trump's running mate. Vance has shown support for the businessman on X after Tom claimed he received death threats and "vile comments about my children" after he posted a series of tweets in which he said "something's gone wrong" in the UK and said "there is nothing wrong with being proud of where you're from". After tweeting about the online abuse, the Vice President tweeted a cartoon image of a South Park character looking dishevelled while sat at a computer to Tom and wrote: "Hang in there, my friend. Remember that 90 percent of people attacking your family look like this." Tom replied to the tweet with: "Thank you JD. Bosh". Days after the online exchange between the pair, Tom revealed on Twitter the pair had met up. He wrote: "When the Vice President of the USA invites ya for a BBQ an beers, you say yes. Unreal night with JD and his friends n family. He was a proper gent. Lots of laughs and some fantastic food. A brilliant night, one to tell the grand kids about mate. Bosh." Tom then shared a selfie of the smiling pair on X and added: "Here is a pic of Me and Vice President @JDVance towards the end of the night after a few beers I'm overdressed in my suit, but when the VP invites you to a BBQ, you don't risk turning up in shorts an flip-flops Cracking night in the beautiful English countryside with JD, his friends and family. Once in a lifetime. Bosh". Skinner has also used his own story to inspire others with learning difficulties to pursue big opportunities as he has dyslexia. He admitted: "I can't even fill out a form, but it didn't matter. The Apprentice changed my life. If you're thinking of applying for something, do it, one million percent."
