Cisco widow donates bee suits to fire department following her husbands passing in bee attack

Yahoo3 days ago

EASTLAND, Texas () – On Sunday, April 27, Cyd Daniel from Cisco lost her husband, Steve, to a bee attack while he was out mowing their property in Eastland. One month later, she is still dedicated to spreading education, enhancing safety in outdoor activities, and supporting the first responders who are on the scene during emergencies.
Daniel invited KTAB/KRBC to join her and a group of small-town residents as they visited the Eastland Fire Department (EFD) to express their gratitude to the firefighters and present a donation that has a direct, practical application.
'I think we've got a good group of men over there. And I think they deserve protection…If you help the Fire Department, it helps all of us,' Daniel said.
On Tuesday evening, Daniel and members of other local communities showed up at EFD with two high-quality beekeeping suits in hand. Daniel said that a man from Dallas had heard about her family's loss through her daughter. That man was asking how he could help Daniel out.
'He said, 'I'd like to help your mom some. Does she want, like, a donation to cancer?' No, he didn't have cancer, and I didn't want a tree planted… But then I thought, well, in memory of Steve,' said Daniel.

With a donation of $500 from that man, Daniel ordered two beekeeping suits for $250 a piece. Daniel said she wanted to make sure they were high-quality suits with ventilation for the firefighters' sake. She was also adamant that they receive at least two, so that whoever is responding to an incident would have some backup help as well.
Eastland Fire Chief Sam Williams said that if the group had only come to thank the department, that would have been enough. So, the addition of the beekeeping suits was extremely appreciated. Williams is saying that most small-town fire departments often depend on the generosity of the community to meet their needs.
'The public has no idea how much that means to myself and our volunteers when we get that pat on the back… To provide the services we provide, we depend very heavily on donations… With those suits on the rig, we can adapt to a situation and not be limited from entering a situation where we might need to assist someone,' Williams said.
Daniel hopes their donation will inspire others nationwide to connect with first responders in their communities and address their needs.
In the interest of education, Abilene Beekeeper and Hive removal specialist Crissy Ward of the Texas Beekeepers Association would like to inform the public that a Beekeeping 101 course will be available on June 21 in Abilene. In that course, you can learn about beekeeping safety and the biological traits that make up a hive. Registration for that class is available now through the Texas Beekeepers Association website.

Building An ‘AI-First' Culture: What Does That Even Mean?

AI-first means people-first Lately, there's been no shortage of talk of managing organizations around 'AI-first' approaches, meaning managers would consider whether AI could do a job, or set of tasks, before humans are brought in. But AI-first goes deeper than that, suggesting an organization's entire culture can be redesigned to incorporate the broad intelligence solutions that AI platforms and tools can offer. How would such an organization look, and is this something a decades-old company could pull off? Cisco Systems, which was founded more than 40 years ago, has been undertaking such a transformation over the past three years across all aspects of its business. This includes transforming 'the way that we build product, the way that our products get used by customers, the way that we actually get jobs done within the company,' said Jeetu Patel, president and chief product officer for Cisco. Even in what is one of the most technology-savvy companies in the world, such an effort will meet resistance, Patel recently explained on a recent episode of Michael Krigsman's CXOTalk. 'It's a cultural shift. It's actually fraught with a level of skepticism." Still, 'If you looked at us a year and a half, two years ago, no one would have really said that Cisco is AI first,' he said. An issue being encountered is 'people have actually been afraid of AI, saying, 'Hey, AI's going to take my job, so I'm not going to go out and use it,' Patel added. 'I actually find that it's less about AI taking your job, it's more about someone that uses AI better than you in their jobs is probably the one who's going to take your job.' Ultimately, 'the dexterity that you need to show in the way in which you do everything with AI is going to be pretty important,' he said. 'We've always felt like there's only going to be two kinds of companies in the world. Ones that are dexterous with the use of AI, and others who really struggle for relevance.' There are three key considerations in building an AI-first culture, Patel explained: Customers are also part of the transformation to an AI-first culture. 'One area that we struggle with is that the pace and rate of change is so fast that communicating that to our customers and having them digest that change is a challenge,' said Patel. 'I don't think we've cracked the code on that.' Customers have a view of Cisco from more than three years back, 'and frankly, it's an entirely different company than what it used to be three years ago,' he added. 'I feel like there's so much coming at people all the time that you have to make sure that you distill it down to a few things that make sense.' For example, AI is accelerating the company's responses to support tickets. It also is helping to reduce overhead costs. On the sales side, AI will help accelerate sales meetings, as well as legal and accounting processes involved with the sale. 'All of those things will have AI as a pretty critical component of it, and I do feel like the sales process is going to change quite materially over the course of the next few years. And you will never be in this position where you go completely blind and unprepared into a conversation because AI can get you prepared within a very, very compressed amount of time on what needs to happen.' What's important now for the new generation that's entering the workforce – as well as existing workers – is not to operate out of fear of AI, Patel advised. 'You have to operate from a place of looking at the possibilities and looking at the opportunities that actually can be unlocked. I would urge people to just have a very different kind of mental model, which is, there's nothing that should stop us from actually being curious about how we might be able to use AI, and this technology is going to get easier and easier and easier, where no longer is technical dexterity going to be an impediment.'

Liberals win close seat as ousted MP hints at comeback

Liberal Tim Wilson has won a hard-fought election battle against teal independent Zoe Daniel, with the defeated MP hinting at a potential rematch. The former member for Goldstein won back the seat in Melbourne's bayside with a final margin of 175 votes following a partial recount of ballots, the Australian Electoral Commission announced on Saturday. The Australian Electoral Commission has today finalised the partial recount conducted in the electoral division of Goldstein. — AEC ✏️ (@AusElectoralCom) May 31, 2025 Mr Wilson took to social media to thank all Goldstein voters, including those who made efforts to vote overseas. "After 29 days of counting, I understand the final recount margin in Goldstein is 177, with 50,232 Liberal primaries which is 14,697 more than the former MP," he said on X. "Now the recount is finished, the result is clear, it is time to get on with the job and take the voice and values of Goldstein to shape the future of Australia: and that's precisely what I will do every day in service." After 29 days of counting, I understand the final recount margin in Goldstein is 177, with 50,232 Liberal primaries which is 14,697 more than the former MP. I want to thank all Goldstein voters, but particularly the extraordinary effort some went to so their voice was heard. — Tim Wilson (@tw4goldstein) May 31, 2025 Ms Daniel has called Mr Wilson to congratulate him on his win and offered commiserations to her volunteers and supporters. "Goldstein is now a vastly different seat to the one he once sat in - about as marginal as it gets - and with that comes embedded accountability," she said. "Changing systems of power is hard. Two steps forward is sometimes followed by one back. "It's a resilience test, and it's a reason to get back up and keep fighting." It's been a long process, and after a recount of about 75% of the votes cast, there were only a few votes in we did not win. But we are not defeated. Hard things are hard, and a better kind of politics is worth fighting you in 2028? Maybe!Link to video… — Zoe Daniel MP (she/her) (@zdaniel) May 31, 2025 The defeated first-term MP praised her team's integrity and humanity, saying they did not seek to "divide" or resort to "attack advertising, misinformation, disinformation, dirty tricks or personal attacks". Ms Daniel ended her post on X with: "See you in 2028? Maybe!" The AEC conducted a partial recount at the request of Ms Daniel after the final count had Mr Wilson 260 votes ahead. The change in margin was attributed to scrutineers challenging the formality of some ballots and a data entry error that was picked up in the recount. "The partial recount has been a methodical and highly transparent process with all counting activities throughout the entire counting period occurring in front of candidate-appointed scrutineers," the commission said Mr Wilson, who lost to Ms Daniel in the 2022 election, is the only Liberal candidate to gain a seat at the election, where the coalition suffered its worst result in 80 years, securing about 43 seats in the House of Representatives. A recount continues in the northern Sydney electorate of Bradfield, where Liberal candidate Gisele Kapterian is narrowly ahead of independent Nicolette Boele.

It took me 2:30 to complete today's NYT Mini. Not a bad time for a Saturday Mini. I'll take that. BARRE was one that I had to rely on the Down answers to fill out. I always think of shots in football (I can't call it soccer, sorry) as being "at goal" not ON GOAL, so that one tripped me up. I thought STERN might have been "harsh" and YARD might be "home," so those slowed me down a bit once I got to the Down clues. I'll be back with you tomorrow for more NYT Mini fun!
